Newspaper Page TextFOUR MEDFORD (OREGON) Ability To Fight Back After Atomic Attack Said Vital Portland CU.R) Lt. Gen. Les lie R. Groves, ret., former di rector of the "Manhattan Proj ect" which developed the atomic bomb, said last night that any futur6 atomic war would not be decided in one blow, but by the "ability to get off the floor after that first punch." "Both sides are triggered to retaliate automatically in the event of such attack," Gen. Groves told members of the Douglas Fir Plywood Association meeting here. Mutt Fight Back But he warned that unless we have the moral capacity to come up off the floor after the first blow strikes "we cannot survive an atomic attack upon the vital centers of this country." The general, now a vice-president of Remington Rand, Inc., said we had the force to retal iate to atomic attack "possibly in greater measure than our po tential enemy." However he stressed that many millions of citizens were still apathetic and indifferent to the possibility of attack. Few Prepared Pleading for survival provis ions on a family level and dis persal in industry, the general warned that not one of the more than 100 American cities consid ered prime atomic targets was prepared to survive an atomic attack. He said an alert public, armed with a knowledge of civilian de fense which they do not yet have, would be "our greatest de fensive weapon against destruc tion by atomic bombs." The general said that if we did survive the dangers of atomic war we would enter "the greatest period of prosperity .mankind has ever known." Salmon Derbies To Be Held Simultaneously Astoria U,R) Three tradi tional salmon derbies on the lower Columbia river will be held simultaneously this year from Aug. 27 to Sept. 5 at As toria, Warrenton and Chinook, Wash. Prizes will total $7350 for the three derbies. Anglers may enter all three derbies so long as they cay reeistration fees in each. but no fisherman has ever won top prizes in au xnree me same year. One of the common and almost universal characteristics of aging is becoming mentall rigid, or set in one's ways. It can prove to be a real handicap. This may sound like defeatism but the fact remains that people are what they are and it's hard to change. I guess I'll just go on being lonesome." (A) You certainly are suffer ing from a case of defeatism, combined with a case of self- pity. I am sure that if your wife were alive today she would urge you to change your attitude. Why should he allow him self to be lonely -and unhappy, even if the person he was de voted to is no longer here to share the remaining years of his life? I am certain that your wife would not want you to be as you are today unhappy, lonely, and with nothing to look for ward to. She would urge you to find someone to share your life with you and to give you some thing to live for. of course, no one can ever take your wife's place or be like her. You would not want that, nor would the woman you married want to be a duplicate of your first wife. She would want to be herself and you would find something in her you could love, just as you did in your first wife. There are plenty of women in the same boat as you, lonely un happy. Those that have obstacles in the way are in the minority. If you look long and hard enough you will find what you are look ing for. But if you keep your defeatist attitude, you can expect a lonelv and unhappy old age.
