TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Monday, June 20. 19S5 Scholarships Awarded to Six Students Portland Six southern Ore gon students have been selected for scholarships to Lewis and Clark college by the Elk Lum ber company of Medford. Established primarily to aid students of Jackson county, the scholarships have now been in creased in number to include students from other, southwest ern counties. The grants are valued at S300 and are awarded on the basis of scholarship, Christian leadership and devo tion to high ideals and standards of conduct. A similar scholarship program has been, worked out with Willamette university. A Medford committee selected the following recipients for 1955 56; Miss Viola M. Russell, Med ford; Miss Sydney K. Suther land, Jacksonville; Miss Barbara J. James, Ashland; Miss Barbara E. Essman and Carroll Zon Johnson, Klamath Falls, end Miss Kara Lee Irwin, Rogue River. Miss Russell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Russell, 204 North Ivy street, is a musician. In addition to her membership in the high school band and orchestra she has played with the all-state orchestra. North west orchestra and the Southern Oregon Philharmonic orchestra. Last year she performed as con cert mistress with the Rogue River Valley Music Festival or chestra. In her junior year she won the Girls' league award. Miss Sutherland is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde F. Sutherland, 305 North Fourth street, Jacksonville, and an hon or student. She has been a mem ber of the school orchestra, band, choir and triple-trio and has served on the newspaper staff. For two years she has been an assistant Girl Scout leader. Overnight Ride Made by Rangers; Winners Named Members of Rogue Rangers made an overnight ride and camping trip to the old Military bridge the weekend of June 12. Accompanying the young people were Mrs. Hattie Gibson, Mrs. William Prentice, Mrs. Ralph McPherson and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Steele Following dinner Saturday right Miss Pat Rushton and Miss Carolyn Jasmine entertained with accordion numbers. The club presented a gift to Mr. and Mrs. Steele in appreciation of their, work with the club. Sunday morning the young people prepared breakfast for visiting parents and then played games on horseback until t;me to ride home. Rogue Rangers were repre sented at the recent Junior Horse show in Grants Pass by El Rita Gabie, Jim and Jane Young. Barbara Read and Lin May. El Rita Gabie won first place in the pleasure horse class, Jim Young and El Rita won third place in a scurry race and Barbara Read took fourth place in the western pleasure class. Mix-Match! Chapter President Attends Convention Mrs. Chester Jines, 122 Lin coin street, newly elected presl dent of Alpha Lambda chapter, Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority, was in Wichita, Kan., last week for the eighth international con vention of the group. Mrs. Jines was a candidate for the office of international second vice-president, and is a past Oregon state president of the sorority. Women Golfers Of Klamath Falls To Be Guests Here ' Women golfers from Klamath Falls will be guests of Rogue Valley Women's Golf associa tion for luncheon, Thursday, June 23, at Rogue Valley Coun try club. Luncheon will be served at 1:30 p.m. Medford golfers planning to attend are asked to make reser vations by calling Mrs. Royal E. Bebb.' 3-1581, or Mrs. Fred Con rad, 3-4972, no later than Tues day evening. Election Planned For Sojourners Medford Sojourners will meet Thursday, June 23, at 1 p.m. at the Medford hotel for election of officers. An invitation is extended to all inactive members to attend. Newcomers to Medford and vi cinity who have lived here less than two years are eligible for membership and are invited to attend and become members. The organization is purely social and has for its main purpose helping newcomers to become acquainted. Any newcomers who has not been contacted will be welcomed at the meetings and can obtain more information by calling 3-4277. Correys Observe Golden Wedding; Ceremony Held Mr. and Mrs. William Correy, 807B South Centtral avenue, cel ebrated their golden wedding an niversary June 10 at a ceremony and reception in Venice, Calif. The Correys renewed their wedding vows at a service con ducted by Elder H. Blakeman of Los Angeles at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Venice. Music was provided by Mrs. Margaret Jones, pianist, Mr. Knotts and J. McConnell, soloists. Mrs. Blake man had decorated the church with marguerites and candles. Mrs. Edna Smith, Culver City, served as attendant for Mrs. Cor rey and Mr. Spencer, pastor of the Venice church, as best man for Mr. Correy. Therese Correy was flower girl. Mrs. Correy wore a blue silk crepe dress trimmed in dusty pink and her corsage was of yel low rose buds. Mrs. Smith wore pink silk crepe with yellow rose bud corsage. Ushers were H. Spintig and Wellman Correy. For the reception Mrs. Esther Baker, Culver City, cut the golden wedding cake and Mrs. Spintig poured punch. The Correys received many gifts and messages, and guests from several cities in southern California attended the celebra tion. Mr. and Mrs. Correy have lived in Medford for six years. Speakers' Clubs Plan Joint Session ; A joint meeting of Medford and Grants Pass Toastmistress clubs has been planned for June 29. It will be held at Rogue Riviera at 7 p.m. Installation of officers will be held, and taking office in the Medford club will be Mrs. Clar ence Wilson, president; Mrs. Wallace Martin, vice - presi dent; Mrs. Donald Bergman, sec retary; Mrs. Arnold Bohnert, treasurer and Mrs. James Vand er Steen, club reporter. Reservations are to be made by phoning Mrs. Bergman, 3-4431, not later than June 25. Anyone interested in joining Toastmistress club is invited to attend. At the last meeting of the Medford club Mrs. Wallace Has- kins, Mrs. Effie Kurtz and Mrs. J. R. Seiler gave talks. Mrs. Has kins talked on "Traveling for Education and Fun." Mrs. Kurtz' topic was "Is Fun the Answer?" and . Mrs. Seiler spoke on "My Most Unforgetable Person." - Toastmistress for the evening was Mrs. Harry Marshall, and Mrs. Bergman was topicmistress. Miss Anna Streed was hostess, Mrs. C. A. Thatcher was speech evaluator, Mrs. Martin was lexi cologist, Mrs. Bohnert served as timekeeper and Mrs. Eloise Winklebeck was program evalu ator. Mrs. Seiler gave the invo cation. Mrs. S. D.. Earhart was a guest for the meeting. Beauticians Elect Two New Officers Mrs. Geri Byrd resigned as president at the last meeting of Medford unit, Oregon Beauti cian's association, held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Funk on North Central avenue. Mrs. Eloise Logan succeeded Mrs. Byrd. Mrs. Virgie Mang re signed from her office as secre tary, and Mrs. Marlene Funk was elected to succeed her. Mrs. Mang will serve as publicity chairman for the group. The next meeting of the group will be a dinner at Tally Ho restaurant July 11. Chapter Members At UN Meeting Medford chapter of Oregon United Nations association has two representatives at the 10th anniversary meeting of United Nations being held in San Fran cisco this week. They are the chapter presi dent, Bruce Manley, and Mrs. Herbert Sampert. Mr. Manley arrived in San Francisco yester day morning to remain for the entire session, and Mrs. Sampert left by United Airlines Sunday afternoon. 4 u Return Mr. and Mrs. Chester Peter son and daughters, 2584 Bullock road, have returned from a two weeks vacation spent visiting relatives near New Windsor, 111. Flanagan, Medford, was recently nominated for approval by the Presbyterian Synod of Oregon for another three-year term on the board of trustees of Lewis and Clark college. This action took nlace at the annual meeting of the board June 5. At this meeting Presi dent Morgan S. Odeil reported that the college had balanced its operating budget for the past year ending May 31. A total of S412.373 came to the collesp in gifts of many, stock and prop erty, including a $100,000 gift from an anonymous donor tn apply on the building fund. Dr. Odell also reported an accumulation of $275,000 in eift toward a new music buildine The opening of Piatt hall dormi tory .tor 122 men and recogni tion by American Association of University Women, which granted membership to the col lege, were noted in the report among achievements of the past year. Winners Announced By Duplicate Club Riverside Duplicate Br idee club has announced winners for the last meeting. Mrs. T. J. Fuson and Roy Pduitt scored 59Vz points to lead north-south winners. Second in that playina position went to Mr. Fuson and Al Gilhousen for 49 Va points and third to Mrs. Richard Milestone and Mrs. J. P. Vachon for 48 noints. Mrs. Van Gil bert and Mrs. M. M. Herman took fourth with 42 Doints. Mrs. Frank R. Baker and Mrs. George B. Dean headed east-west winners, scoring 45Vfc points. John Solheim and Emery Wheat took second with 44 points, and in third place were Mrs. E. K Ricker. and Mrs. J. N. Tobin with 40 points. Fourth went to Mrs. George Choate and Mrs. O. O. Cory Jr., hat re cently been graduated from the University of South Carolina at Columbia, S.C. Mr. Cory placed sixth in scholarship in a class of 529 students and was graduated cum laude. He was also No. 1 graduate in the United States Air Force ROTC, receiving tha ROTC cita tion. He has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, national scholastic honor society. The student received the Sec ond Hampton Award in History his junior year. Mr. Cory has been appointed a reserve officer in the USAF with the rank of second lieuten ant. ' ' i Mrs. Cory is the formar Mary Anne Sletten of Medford,- and the Corys are making their home in Columbia pending a call to active duty for Mr. Cory. Little Orchestra Ta Give Concert Portland, Ore. (U.R) Port land's Little Chamber orchestra, now touring Europe under its director, Boris Sirpo, will give a concert here July 7. Members of the 70ung wom en's orchestra will . return to Portland July 5. The group is scheduled to appear on a tele vision show in New York on July 3.
