He stated that country folk are fairly safe from the effects of an atomic attack by their distance from the cities. He also showed many pictures of France. His commentary of the French people and their, prob lems was most interesting. He was accompanied by Mrs. Hicks. The square dance parties will not be held during the summer months. The heavy work of the season causes too many folks to stay at home. Rep. Harris' Ellsworth sent a letter asking that all that wish to receive his communications kindly sign a paper that Master Lawrence Perry has. He will send the list to Representative Ellsworth. It was decided that all' mem bers will come early before the July meeting and clean i the Grange grounds. It is hoped that all will come by 7 or 7:30 pjn. A letter was received from Mrs. John Winton, secretary of Eagle Point Teenage club, thank ing our Grange for the donation of our juke-box. Mr. Clymer of Eagle Point donated his time and labor in the repairing of the machine. HIS Buried tasure by Statue Called Saloon Art In 1890 Worth $1500 A coffee table in front of the fireplace held a heavily hooded something that was about two feet high. As soon as we were all seated, Ed lifted the hood. "Pure saloon art," Ed's Aunt Emily said. "Genuine 1890." I had the temerity to ask how she could so easily recognize it as such. None of the saloons I have frequented had anything like it. The piece consisted of a cowboy clinging to the back of a bronco that had reared up to climb the sky. "It s Frederic Remington's," she said. "His stuff was not only in every saloon, but practically every barber shop in America. He was in many of the . leading magazines and . got into most homes in America via calen dars." She shot me a meaning look, adding that Marilyn Mon roe hadn t been thought of then. "Mostly, Remington painted. CLEANLINESS OFTEN BELIES Whenever you happen to visit a salvage shop or other type of secondhand store, be sure to give more than casual glance at any tumblers it may have for sale. Just a few days ago I happened to pass up what would have been a, very nice buy. Why I did so was because the tumblers were so clean that I thought they must be modern imitations of an. old design. Furthermore, it seemed to me practically impossible that there should be five of them to gether, if they really were an tique. The . tumblers there had been seven In all, but someone had bought the other twowere of clear glass, tall and regular in shape. On one side they showed a cannon of a type used about 1830. Leaning against it were a ram rod and a United States flag. Nearby, in the foreground, were a case of cannon balls and a dis mounted mortar that apparently had been struck by an enemy shell. On the other side of the glass RARE SILVER CENTER CENT MISTAKEN FOR TOKEN. It didn't seem exactly right to me for a baby that had such a big mouth, to be playing with anything he could swallow so easily. So quick as his mother's back was turned, I took the coin out of the tot's fingers, substitut ing an absolutely safe rattle. This coin was probably worth a lot and might get lost. The piece seemed like a token to me and a -mutilated one at that. There was a hole in its center plugged with a piece of what seemed to be silver and which stood out smartly against the copper. ' "We'll look it up," said Anne, the tot's mother. "Grandpa had some , catalogues in his study." All of us were impressed, in cluding the old gentleman to whom the piece belonged but who had long since forgotten he had ever had it. Known as the silver center cent, the piece is one of those TOO lATf TO CLASSIFY STRAWBERRIES on Orr Drive "off Table Rock Road Phone TA 8-3878 after 13 KW. C. E. Myrick. "This is one of 200 bronze copies and a few of silver Remington made before the original was de stroyed." I asked him how he knew. He proved it by a bill of sale for $900 made out to a saloon keep er. It was dated Jan. 3, 1805, too soon after the piece was pro duced for it to be a counterfeit Ed had bought it from the latest owner of the saloon, a woman who wanted the place re done in chrome, . plastic and leather and who rather pitied Ed for being so dumb as to pay the $500 she asked for the piece. Ed didn't bother to tell her that any of the bronze copies made by Remington himself -is worth at least $1,500 and prob ably more. TRUE VALUE OF ANTIQUES was an American eagle, wings extended, facing to 4he left with the arms of the. United States on its breast. A sword and a U. S. flag were crossed in front of the noble bird. The clerk told me they were $1 each. Obviously they were phoney. An acquaintance of mine, how ever, was not so critical and bought them without a murmur. He was looking for tumblers to use and purchased these because he thought the design superior to many others he had seen, while the price was lower than that asked for tome that he hadn't liked as much. When I saw him at his place later, he was delighted to point out that the glasses I had re jected and he had bought had a value of around $20 each. A friend of his had offered him that price. He wanted them as a gift for his wife and so was quite willing to pay more than the average price each of the tumblers whose maker is not known, should have brought $10 to $15. struck Off bv the Philadefohia mint in its trial runs. On one side it has the legend LIBERTY PARENT OF SCIENCE & IN DUSTRY. The words encircle a Liberty head and are over the date, 1792. On the other side, are the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA enclosing a wreath in which it says ONE CENT. Value of the piece, whether or not the silver plug is in the hole, is from $400 ud. a sum that makes it much too high, for a plaything for any child.
