Devices to Measure Soil Water Content Used in Sams Valley Devices to measure the water content of soil have been in stalled on three farms in the Sams Valley area, County Agent W. B. Tucker said today. The peg-like devices, which measure the water content at 6, 12, 18 and 24 inches, have been placed for demonstration pur poses on the Strauss Brothers, Earl Peffley, and Burreson Brothers farms. Each of the three farms is under the Cliff Ranch irrigation system, which is privately owned, and each of the three uses sprinkling systems for irri gation work. To Make Readings Operators of each of the three farms will make readings on the water content once every three days, and accurate records will be kept until the end of the irrigating season, when the de vices will be removed. The "pegs" are so constructed that they will absorb water from the soil at varying depths. A small box, which looks much like a Geiger counter, is attached to them to obtain a reading, -based on the principal of elec trical resistance. Governs Irrigation The pegs are placed in the ground at various points on the three farms in order to obtain an average water content. The in formation gained allows the farmers to irrigate at the most advantageous time, and to turn off irrigation water when the water content of the soil reaches the heeded level, thus saving water. Tucker pointed out that the only problem with the devices is that they will not work, well in neavy clay type soil, which tends to pull away from the pegs when it becomes dry. .
