CP-Medford Legion Crew Faces KF Here on Sunday a Central Point-Medford will try to keep its record unblemished and Klamath Falls will attempt to get back in the win column this Sunday when the two Amer ican Legion junior baseball con tingents clash on the Medford senior high school field. A twinbill is scheduled with the starter planned for 2 p.m. ' Outcome of the tussles is rated a toss-up. Although the Cokes of Klamath dropped two Net Classes Will Start On Monday Registration for summer ten nis classes sponsored by -the Medford public school system will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, June 20, Instructor Warren Brenner "announced today. Four classes will be con ducted at the senior high Mon day through Friday over a five weeks period ending July 22. They will be free of charge. The instruction is for both boys and girls. It is planned mainly for junior and senior high school-age students. How ever, younger boys and girls who are interested may enroll. Ov.er By 11 a.m. Classes are planned for 7, 8, 9 and 10 a.m.' and will be over by 11 a.m. Brenner pointed out that with the morning sessions heat can be avoided. If enroll ment demands, there will be other classes with members of Medford high's title tennis squad helping out. Only requirement is that the pupils have their own tennis shoes and racquets. However, there will be a few racquets available to borrow, Brenner slated A total of 48 boys and girls were enrolled last year. - frays to Ashland last week end and CP-Medford has tripped the Lithia nine, Klamath Falls has slightly more impressive vic tories over Lakeview than the locals. Both clubs may be somewhat stronger than they were for ac tion last Sunday. CP-Med. will have Dennis King and Ed Rein king back from Beaver Boys State. Mickey Carney, one of the Cokes' top twirlers, may be back after missing the Ashland games. Other probable starting hurler for Klamath is Darrell Rusth. Don Taucher and Butch Kimp ton could see hill duty for the Cokes. Jerry Burke and Ken Bell could divide the catching. The Medford and' Central Point club's moundsmen will be picked from among Duane Sides, Fred Herrmann and Henry Put ney. All have performed cred itably so far. However, Herr mann hurt his arm last Sunday. His availabiliity for this week end has not been reported. La val Meunier is likely catcher. The locals still will be minus the services of two players, both attending National Guard camp. They are Paul Eckel, outfielder, and Lyman Stubbs, third base man. In another Sunday doublebill, Lakeview will be at Ashland. Fifty competitors from nine European nations participated in the international meet. (International) Harrington Equals Links Record Here There were indications today of a torrid match when touring professionals Billy Maxwell and Bo Wininger meet Al Williams, pro, and George Harrington, manager, of Rogue Valley Coun try club in a best ball golf ex hibition. The match, open to the public free of charge, is set for 1 p.m. Monday at the Medford links. In a tune-up tour of the links yesterday Harrington carded a five-under-par 67. The score tied the non-competitive course rec ord held jointly by Harrington and Eddie Oldfield, Roseburg. A sizzling four - under - par 31 was recorded by the manager on the back nine after he had gone over the front lap in 36. Test Ability ' . Ability of Maxwell and Win inger to match in their first time here the play of the Rogue Val ley veteran and the scores of the top competitors in the present Oregon Open here will be tested in the exhibition here. The two men following the pro circuit are now contending in the U. S. Open at San Fran cisco. Yesterday Maxwell had a 76 and Wininger a 75. Maxwell of Odessa, Tex., was 1951 na tional amateur champion and took the Wilmington open this year. Wininger won the Baton Rogue tourney and has the rec ord low of 60 for a Professional Golfers association tourney. They will be en route to the Western Open at Portland. A 5 p.m. clinic will be held.. Buffalo have poor eyesight, but they are said to be able to detect water at a distance of five miles. Sports Afield. Shaw is a commissioned ROTC officer in the infantry. He has already received his orders but they do not require. him to re port for active duty until Febru ary of 1957. Guard Jack Patera, who also has signed with the Baltimore club. Also has orders for active duty in 1957. Louise Brough Left in Running London (U.R) Louise Brough of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Dorothy Head Knode of Ala meda, Calif., were the only U.S. representatives remaining today in the London Lawn Tennis championships. Hamilton Richardson, the last Yank hope in the men's division, was eliminated in the quarter finals Thursday. The Rhodes scholar from Baton Rouge, La., dropped a 10-8, 6-4 verdict to Mervyn Rose, as Australian play ers gained all four berths in the semifinals. In today's matches, Rose was pitted against Lewis Hoad, while Ken Rosewall faced Rex Hart wig. Miss Brough, the defending champion in the women's divi sion played Angela Burton of Britain in the semifinals, while Mrs. Knode was pitted against Jean Forbes of South Africa, who "upset Darle'ne. Friday, June 17, 1955 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THIRTEEN : Last-Minute Plans For Catfish Derby Sunday Laid by Club Last minute plans for the 19th annual National Catfish derby, to be held at TouVelle State Park Sunday, were made at a meeting of the 20-30 club, spon sors of the event, last night. A 'no-host queen's banquet will be held tonight. Some of the prizes to be pre sented to contest winners at the Sunday event are those for the heaviest, longest and best cat fish; a sweepstakes prize for the best over-all fishing ability; for the baldest man, fattest woman, youngest twins, couple married the longest, most newly married couple, and oldest car. Pie-eating and bubble - gum Jones, Durando Tangle Tonight New York (U.R) Middle weights Ralph Jones of Yonkers, N.Y., and Ernie Durando of Bay onne, N.J., will try to hit the comeback trail tonight in their TV-radio 10-rounder at Madison Square Garden. Jones lost his last fight on a decision to Eduardo Lausse of Argentina on May 13. Durando lost his two latest bouts, on a decision to Kid Gavi lan, Feb. 4, and on a knockout by Peter Mueller of Germany last Dec. 28. Ernie's bout with Gavilan was his only engage ment this year. Jones is favored at 12-5 be cause of his boxing skill and because of his greater activity in 1955. He had four bouts this year. He outpointed Sugar Ray Robinson, lost to middleweight champion Bobo Olson, knocked out Georgie Johnson and lost to Lausse. 66 Entries Now In Club Tourney A total of 66 Rogue Valley Countryclub men so far have entered the club championship golf tourney. George Harrington is still tops among qualifiers with a one-over-par 73. Club Pro Al Williams is hop ing for a flood of additional en tries before qualifying play con cludes. Qualifying is scheduled to end by this Sunday evening. Fifth in a series of mixed two ball foursomes is scheduled at the club on Sunday. The event this time will start at 5 p.m. Play is for temporary possession of the Brophy trophies. L. L. Simpson To Give Walton Talk in July L. L. Simpson, secretary-manager of Southern Oregon Con servation and Tree Farm assoc iation, will be speaker at the evening dinner when the Ore gon division of the Izaak Walton league of America holds its state director's meeting here, on Sat urday, July 16. Members of the Jackson coun ty chapter of the league are now making preparations for the day long session at the Jackson ho tel. Directors at the conclave will represent 30 chapters. Oth er Waltonians. are expected to sit in on the meeting. -Fishing and breakfast on Rogue river on Sunday morning are amdng activities planned by the local club to entertain their visitors. Pat McAteer Captures British Mitt Mantles Liverpool, England (U.R) Pat McAteer of England won the British and British Empire middleweight title Thursday night when champion Johnny Sullivan, also of England, was disqualified in the ninth round of the scheduled 15 round bout for low punching. Prizes for these contests have been donated by Medford mer chants. Judges will be Frank Perl and Frank DeSouza, chief kingfishers, who have officiated at each derby for many years. Richard Schuchard will be mast er of ceremonies. There will be continuous en tertainment, and the 20-30 club will operate booths selling hot dogs, cold drinks, ice cream bars and Popsicles. Court o Rule The Catfish Derby court, in cluding Queen Betty Miller and her four princesses, will rule over the festivities which will start at 1:30 pjn. Mike Napolitano, Coronado, Calif., sub - district governor of the 20-30 clubs in southern Cali fornia, and Bill White, presi dent of the Portland 20-30 club, attended last night's meeting, and praised the local club for sponsoring the derby, which as far as is known here is unique on the Pacific Coast. Paving Bids Asked On State Highways The state highway commis sion has issued a call for bids on sealing of 56.5 miles of pave ment of Pacific, Crater Lake and West Diamond Lake highway in Jackson and Douglas counties. . The project is one of 34 on which bids were called this week by the commission in Salem. Bids will be opened June 30 and July 1 in Portland. Sealing involves placing gravel and a sealer coat on al ready existing pavement. IT FIGURES Columbus, O. (U.R) State Represented Leonard J. His wife gave birth to their second son on March 17. 4-H Summer School Elects Presidents Corvallis (U.R) Judy How- ton, 16, Of lone, and Glen Klock, 17, Corbett, yesterday were elected girls' and boys presi dents of the 40th annual 4-H summer school here. Some 1850 boys and girls were attending the 10-day session which began Tuesday. The Fort Peck Indian Reser vation in Montana is as large as the combined states of Rhode Island and Delaware.
