LmOLW Medford, Oregon AS M A LIT : A VDW(S Prominent Lay Leader Accused Of 'Using' Office Buanot Aires U.R) Two of tha highest dignitaries of tha Roman Catholic Church in Argentina war arrested and expelled from tha country to day on charges of defying civil authorities and provoking last week and's violent disorders In tha capital. On their arrival at Rio Da Janairo. Brazil, tha two churchman told nawsman "We were expelled to Rome." Tha deportation was unique in tha both men are natives of Argentina. Buenos Aires U.R) Two top Roman Catholic leaders in Ar gentina, arrested last night on charges of defying civil authori ties and provoking disorders, boarded a government owned airliner today en route to Rome. The two churchmen, Msgrs. Manuel Tato, acting archbishop of Buenos Aires, and Ramon Carlos Novoa, left Buenos Aires aboard a regular passenger plane of state owned Aerolines and were due to make a connection with a Rome-bound plane at 6 p.m. tomorrow in Lisbon. The circumstances of their de parture were not known. At the same time, congres sional circles believed that im peachment proceedings may start tomorrow against Supreme Court Justice Thomas Casares, promi nent Catholic lay leader accused of using his office to hinder po lice action during the week end disorders. A final decision was expected from today's regular Cabinet meeting which also was being attended by Angel Miel Asquia, president of the Peronista block of deputies. Reliable sources, earlier to day, disclosed the arrest of the two priests. The two were re ported stripped of all municipal posts and there were indications they soon would be put on trial. High Vatican sources said any order to arrest Roman Catholic prelates in Argentina would in voke automatic excommunica tion on President Juan D. Peron and all other persons involved. The Vatican sources compared such arrests with the imprison ment of high church leaders in the Communist-dominated coun tries. "We regard the reports of these arrests in Argentina as very grave," the sources said to day. Possible impeachment pro ceedings against Casares, a prom inent Catholic lay leader, was indicated in a federal police re port sent to Congress and the court by the government. The report accused Casares of at tempting to use his position to hinder police action during the disorders Sunday night and of trying to get the army to send infantry troops to protect the archbishop's palace. Casares was found in the pal ace Sunday when it was invaded by police who arrested 428 Cath olics taking refuge there from angry. Peronists. An official an nouncement said 159 of those arrested, including 64 minors, were released Tuesday night, Twenty-two persons were wounded or otherwise injured in the clashes. Tens of thousands of workers massed in the center of Buenos Aires Tuesday to shout their sup port for Peron in his campaign against the church. The rally was staged by the General Con federation of Labor which called a nine-hour general strike to bring out the workers. It was one of the biggest rallies in the 12 year history of Peronism. Peron Addresses Throngs Peron himself addressed the cheering throngs and appealed to his supporters not to be pro voked but to remain calm and allow the church to be ousted as the state religion by legal procedures. Shortly after Peron spoke, the rally broke up. The reported arrests of Tato Argentina Buenos Aires (U.R) In the past seven months President Juan D. Peron's government has taken the following action against the Catholic Church in Argentina: 1. Legalized divorce and per mitted the re-marriage of di vorced persons for the first time in Argentine history. 2. Passed a law recognizing that children born out of wed lock have equal rights with legi timate offspring. 3. Restored legalized prosti tution throughout Argentina de- Rising Kootenai Wafers Watched Br UNITED PRESS Idaho officials were ready to move state patrolmen and heavy equipment into Bonners Ferry today at the slightest indication of danger from the rising Koo tenai river. The Kootenai topped the 30 foot flood stage with a reading of 31.9 feet yesterday, but flood coordinator Dayton Douglas re ported from Bonners Ferry he was confident the dikes would withstand the high water for a short period. Reports from Libby, Mont., above Bonners Ferry, indicated that the river would crest at about 32 feet within 24 hours. A tractor-mounted shovel was put on a standby basis at Coeur d'Alene and additional state pa trolmen were ready to move into the area should they be needed. Meanwhile, the Willamette river at Portland and the Colum bia at Vancouver, Wash., rose only slightly. They both were at 19.1 feet, only four-tenths of a foot higher than yesterday. Many tributary streams were on their way down. Seven Air Force Reservists To Train Seven local Air Force reserv ists will be among 700 Oregon and Washington reserves going on two. weeks active duty with the 403rd Reserve Troop Carrier wing at Ardmore Air Force base, Ardmore, Okla., August 7. The reserves .will be trans ported by air from Portland Air Force base, and will return by air after the encampment. Those going from Medford are First Lt. Roy W. Bergmann, Lt. Col. Thomas A. Culbertson Jr., First Lt. Robert D. Thompson, Sgt. Donald M. Wiley, Sgt. Lo ran C. Fowler, Sgt. Frederick T. Baker, and Airman Richard Bell. Accompanying the Medford group will be Capt. Richard N. Dillon of Central Point, Airman Gilbert J. Thiel of Yreka, and Airman John T. Lax ton of Glendale, Calif. and Novoa followed by a few hours their dismissal from mu nicipal posts by government de cree. Tato, one of the leading fig ures in the months-long contro versy between church and state, has . been acting head of the church hierarchy in Argentina because of the illness of Santiago Luis Cardinal Copello. The decree, signed by Peron and members of his cabinet, ac cused the prelates of promoting and organizing recent disorders in Buenos Aires and elsewhere in the country. Tato was deprived of govern ment recognition as auxiliary bishop, vicargeneral and canon; Novoa as canon and deacon. Both are members of the Roman Catholic Curia. A statement is sued by the Curia said ministers of the archdiocese are desig nated by the archbishop which apparently meant the church will maintain them in their cleri cal positions. w Acts Against Catholics spite strong church opposition. 4.
