Ken Bitterling Named 4-H Member of Month in County Ken Bitterling 17, son of Mr, and Mrs. Robert Bitterling, route l, box 83, Eagle Point, is Jack son county club member of the month for May. A 7 year club member, Ken has completed six years in dairy, five years in beef and swine, three years in tractor mainten ance, one year in poultry and two years as junior leader in the Antelope 4-H Dairy club. His fellow 4-H'ers have elected him as president of the county-wide Teenage Council for 1955 and also president of the Antelope 4- H Community club for 1955. He hai served in the capacity of vice-president, president, report' er and song leader in many dif ferent 4-H project clubs. Had Champion Jersey His 1954 activities saw him walk off with the grand cham pion jersey in the county fair, champion dairy showman and an alternate for the Pacific Inter national fair, champion dairy howman and an alternate for the Pacific International' Live stock judging team. His dairy cattle have consistently won firsts and seconds and he also had a reserve champion in 1953 In addition to topping the coun ty fair in showmanship in dairy. e was one of 15 top beef show men at this year's Junior Grand National Livestock Exposition at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. He was awarded the Jersey Cat tle club trophy as champion showman at the Junior Dairy show at Gold Hill in May, A consistently high judge, in 1952 representing the county at the P.I., he was second high on the second high dairy judging team and was high individual in jersey judging. In 1953 at State fair, he was the third individual judge. He has attended the an nual 4-H Summer school in Cor- vallis two different years and took an active part in sports and other summer school activities. In 1953 he was awarded the county medal for having an out standing dairy project and in 1954 the county medal for the tractor maintenance project. School Activities Ken graduated from the Eagle Point High school this year and was in the upper one-fourth of his graduating class. He was a charter member of the Eagle Point chapter of the National Honor society. He, took an ac tive part in school activities which included four years in the class plays, student council rep resentative as a junior decora tion .chairman for the high school carnival 1955, two years in the band, and high school chorus work. A good athlete, he is a three year letterman in bas ketball and track where he com peted in the low and high hur dles and the broad jump. The family farm at Eagle Point consists of 320 acres, most of it in pasture to take care of the 50 dairy cows which the Bitterlings own. This is the second club member of the month award for the Bitterling family as Jean, an older sister now working at the Rogue River Valley State bank, was an out standing club member last year. Raymond 15, an active club member, rounds out the Bitter ling family. Poultry Beef In addition to dairy cattle, the Bitterlings have a family poultry flock and some beef steers that the club members are raising, and a pet deer. The young buck, orphaned early m the year, is a special pet of Jean's and the KEN BITTERLING 4-H Member of Month able to keep away from hunters this tall. Ken's future plans call for en rolling at Oregon State college this fall to major in animal hus bandry. His work in junior lead ership and livestock projects have made him one of the out standing club members in Jack son county today. Ridgway Will Head Mellon Institute Pittsburgh (U.R) Gen. Mat thew B. Ridgway will become chairman of the board of Mellon institute, an institution for in dustrial research here, soon after he retires as Army chief of staff. Richard K. Mellon, a director of the institute, in announcing Ridgway's appointment yester day, explained that trustees of the institute desired to transfer increasing administrative bur dens" from members of the staff so they could devote more time to their scientific work. ine ou-year-om tormer com mander of United Nations troops in Korea is scheduled to retire as chief of staff June 30 and will assume his new- duties about the middle of September.
