(International) Lumber Products Earnings Under Mark (or 1953 Salem CJ.R) The lumber strike during the third quarter of 1954 adversely affected the entire economy of Oregon for that period, according to .the State Unemployment Compensa tion Commission. Lumber and wood products earnings fell short of 1933 by more than $13,000,000. Payrolls In Oregon's main industry, due to the strike, declined to $82,- 493,000 in the third quarter, compared .to $97,625,134 for the third quarter of 1953. Construction also dropped and the report of the commission said the low quarter during the strike accounted for most of the difference in this industry. Cain in Lata Months Settlement of the strike and return to work by loggers and others associated with the wood industry resulted in a gain of . five per cent in payrolls during the last three months of the year. While payrolls showed a loss of 5.8 per cent during the third quarter over the same period a year before, totalling $330,303, 160, the payrolls during the last quarter climbed to S341.635, 647. The report said that food processing practically . held to the 1953 figures, losing only $128,000 to a total of $61,546, 102. Biqgest Gain Increases were reported by paper products, printing and publishing, coal and petroleum, primary and fabricated metals, electrical machinery, professions and scientific i n s t r u ments, ordnance and miscellaneous manufacturing. Biggest gain nearly $3,000, 000 came from fabricated metal products, which reported a record $22,279,649 in payrolls. Transportation, com munica tions. utilities and trade general had lower payrolls. Legislative Jam Delays Oregon Bills Washington (U.P.) : Commit tee consideration of two Oregon-sponsored bills for partner ship construction of three dams in the state has been held up temporarily by a legislative traf fic jam. Repu. Harris Ellsworth's Cou gar and Green Peter dam biir and Rep. Sam Coon's John Day bill are both snowed under in the House Public Works Com mittee. Ellsworth's measure has been approved by a sub-committee and now must go before the full committee. Coon's bill must yet come before the rivers and har bors subcommittee. Committee officials said they had "no idea" when the bills would come up, but stated no effort has been made to stall the measures.
