Personal Health Service By WILLIAM BRADY, M.D. Readers should address Inquiries to: Dr. William Brady 263 El Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif. YOU CANT IGNORE THE STATISTICS A familiar device of every ready operators working up bus iness for themselves and the hos pital is this: "The child will probably con tinue to have one cold after an other until those bad tonsils are removed." This shabby trick disarms countless parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, big brothers or sisters who might otherwise save the child from a major oper ation Notice, please, the tonsil snatchers give no guarantee or commitment of any kind. They leave it to the gullible guardians to draw the inference that ton sillectomy will put an end to the usual childhood illnesses. Well, now, what can parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, etc. who have gotten beyond the third grade in school learn from the most authoritative statistics available today concerning the effects of tonsillectomy? I'll cite these statistics for you, or, if you'd rather study the question first-hand, you may find in your public library the book from which I quote: Children's Ton sils In and Out, by Albert D. Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent Kaiser, M. D., published by Lip pincott, 1932. Dr. Kaiser's sta tistics are the most authoritative we have today, and I do hereby solemnly promise to make pub lic apology, retraction, correc tion, or amendment if any repu table physician or group of phy sicians can show that there are today any more authoritative or more carefully compiled sta tistics on the effects of tonsillec tomy on the frequency of so called "colds" in childhood than Dr. Kaiser's. Information obtained from parents of 4,400 Rochester school children between four and seven years of age showed that 42 per cent were subject to three or more "colds" a year. For various reasons physicians advised removal of the tonsils and adenoids of the 4,400 chil dren. But 2,200 of the children were subjected to the operation, and 2,200 were not. The entire groups of 4,400 children were observed over a period of ten years, and then, when the childred were from 14 to 17 years of age, high school students, "the general incidence of repeated colds was definitely less than it had been when the children were four to seven years of age." ' Among the . 2,200 children whose tonsils and adenoids had been removed 22 per cent (484 children) were still subject to repeated "colds." Among the 2,200 whose tonsils and adenoids were not removed 31 per cent (692 children) still had repeated "colds." In view of these statistics I must say I don't see how any QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Company The floors of our house are in fested with fleas. He tells why he risks death in the ring. By BUDD BOETTICHER Written for United Press Hollywood (U.P.) Several weeks ago I was celebrating the fact my picture "The Magnifi cent Matador," was ready to be shown, so it seemed logical to accept an invitation to go to the border city of Tijuana, Mexico, to fight the brave bulls. A handful of years have pass ed since I was in a bull ring, an arena that has fascinated me from the moment I first stepped into one as a torero at the tender age of 19. That was more than 15 years ago Since then when ever opportunity has arisen be tween pictures, I've tried to block out time for bull fighting. Many people have attempted to explain that fascsination of the bulls for the audience as well as the fighter. When it was announced I would actually be going into the ring again, I knew many of my Hollywood friends would be in the audience looking for the answer. No Psychiatrist Now it's true a man can get killed fighting bulls. And many of them do. Why do I do it then? Making pictures in Hollywood can be an exciting, highly pro fitable and quite frequently, an ulcer-provoking business. I don't have ulcers. Nor do I visit a psychiatrist. I fight bulls instead. I trimmed down to 176 pounds for the fight. I never felt better in my lite. I became a different man, a man with a purpose. And though this was, I believe, the 28th time I'd been in the ring, it was the first time I felt no fear at all I was going to do something I was not at all sure I could do and if I failed the penalty would be tougher than one connected TV Programs - KBES (Channel 5) THURSDAY 3 :50 Devotions 4:00 Feminine Fancies 4:30 Robert Q. It's like step ping into a cold shower and com ing out feeling newborn and clean. In the ring, later, I looked up at the Hollywood contingent in the stands Jane Powell, Xav ier Cugat, Bob Parrish and John Wayne. I had killed the bull after having been uncom fortably close to his horn sever al times. As I looked at my friends I knew that they could not know the exhilaration and the peace I felt at that moment. I'm going back to fight the bulls again in October. I hope to be able to do it periodically as long as my legs hold out. Have you heard of any better insurance against ulcers? Medford Youth Named To U.S. Naval Academy Charles H.
