Promotions Given To CAP Members at Meeting This Week Several promotions and certif icates of accomplishments were awarded members of the Med ford squadron of the Civil Air patrol Monday night. Janice Stevens was promoted from second lieutenant to first lieutenant and Roger Carson and Arnold Dillon were promoted from croporal to sergeant. Ca dets Mary Daniels and Kenneth Potucek. were promoted to ser geant. . Robert Kooser was promoted from private to corporal, and Terry Krinock was promoted to private from cadet. Certificates Awarded Certificates of accomplish ments were awarded to First Lt. Johnny Foust, Pfc. Terry Kri nock, Cpl. Robert Kooser and Cadet Ted DeFord. Cadets passing tests of aero nautics study manuals are pre pared to take flight proficiiency examinations, and if that exam ination is passed the cadet is eligible to enter the Air Force with an airman's rate. H. S. Graduates Available for Jobs A considerable number of high school graduates have submitted job applications to the local of fice of the Oregon state employ ment service. John H. Patton, manager of the local office, said the young people "represent a valuable ad dition to the local labor force," and although some have started work already, others still are seeking employment. Those seeking permanent full time employment are being reg istered by the local office, and Patton pointed out the office will help prospective employers se lect the right graduate for the position. Proficiency and aptitude ex aminations can be given through the local office, and Patton urged employers seeking high school graduates to contact him. Truman left here by train today en route to Portland, Ore., where he will take part in the Rose Festival parade Saturday morning and speak at a Jefferson-Jackson Day banquet that night. Lumber Grade Rule Changes Subject Of Meeting Here Proposed lumber grading rule changes will be discussed at a meeting of the West Coast Lum bermen's association at a meet ing at Medford hotel Tuesday night. The changes in grading are expected to be the most signifi cant in the 50-year history of lumber grading, and are pro posed to assist better merchan dising of West Coast lumber. H. V. Simpson, executive vice president of the association will explain proposed changes. A committee of lumbermen has worked about two years to im prove grading rules, Simpson said The Medford district is repre sented by E. W. Pease, A. A. Lausmann and George C. Flana gan. Association officials Harris . Smith and E. E. Stoddard, both of Portland, will also at tend. Simpson said the west coast lumber industry has improved nation-wide merchandising and nromotion since World War II, and that grading rules need to be incorporated into the improvea merchandising program. Farm Produce Market Sets Opening Friday Medford Farm Produce, a firm tn rve as a sales outlet for farmers of the valley, will open for business on Friday at 2800 North Pacific highway. Proprietors are Louis Eck. 203 North Peach St., and Jerry Brant, 1022 West 11th st. The market is in remodelled quarters. Snecials are planned Friday through Sunday as a feature of the opening. Eck has been a planing mill foreman and has worked in newspaper circulation m Port land. Doctors Stiff Discovering Consequences Caused by Using Spin es as Lash Whips By DELOS SMITH United Press Science . Editor Atlantic City, N.J. (U.PJ It's smart to avoid the lash of your own - whip because the doctors still are discovering the conse quences. The whip is your . spine with neck and head attached. When it is snapped, it lashes back. The painful results can be amazingly diverse, long-lasting, and obscure. ; Three sets of physicians in separate scientific conferences at -the annual meeting of the American Medical Association, debated the business of human "spines being used as lashing whips. They knew it was going to happen even more often in the future rather than less. . People aren't going to give up their automobiles, - nor stop wanting them to be faster and fancier. The doctors hoped fer vently they'd learn .to .drive them without letting their spines become lashing whips. 'Rapid Deceleration' " What the doctors call "rapid deceleration", does it; such as bringing your moving car to a dead stop in a flash by smashing it into another car or into some other object which won't give. The spines of the occupants are likely to be extended, that is, snapped out, by the compelling force of gravity. .They snap back. : Whip-lash injuries are becom ing so common the doctors who patch people up are beginning to feel overwhelmed. The severe ones are easy enough from the patching point of view the whip is fractured at some point along, its length or it is sprained or it is frayed. Six Bodies Recovered In Brazil Flash Flood . . Alegre, .Brazil "!U.R) Officials today reported the re covery of the' bodies of six per sons who died in flash floods when a huge dam collapsed near Pinhal; in Rio Grande Do Sul state Wednesday. ' The authorities discounted a Brazilian press report that the eventual death toll may reach 100. - ; The relatively minor ones are troublesome. The patient says he has headaches or he can't move his torso or twist his neck with the freedom he used to before his automobile accident. Often he'd like to sue the other driver, who is financially backed with insurance. The doctor doesn't want to be made a sucker-witness, but on the other, hand, he must treat and certify injuries. Patients and Patterns Dr. Leo Arthur Green, Forest Hills, 'N.Y., .told one scientific conference here that his special X-ray techniques would reveal obscure sprains of the spine which ordinary X-rays wouldn't. In his practice, he said, he had established, the patterns of the pains, and complaints .which us ually went with -speciific in juries, and those which mani fested themselves early and those that did so late.
