TEH MEDrORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, Jum S, 1955 American Aviation Takes Cue From British; Starts ohq Jet Luxury iPflanes 1 WorCi Passengers Will Streak at Speeds of 400-600 MPH Washington (U.R) American aviation struck out boldly today to overtake Britain's lead in both jet and turbo-prop luxury airliners. Both types of plane, largely rid of age-old cabin noise and vibration caused by piston en gines, will compare with today s models as 1955 Lincolns with Model A Fords. In the coming transports, passengers" will streak over the air lanes at speeds of 400 to 600 miles -per hour at altitudes of 30,000 to 40,000 feet. These new sky giants are promised during the next four years. American Airlines, Inc., the world's leading transportation company in passenger sales, took the major step yesterday of orrlPrine a fleet of 35 turbo-prop planes from Lockheed Aircraft Corn., at a cost of $65,000,000. The 400-mile an hour plus air planes will be the first turbine powered transports built in this country for commercial service. Britain's smaller Vickets Vis count has been in service more than two years. Douglas Aircraft Co., which has said it could not build turbo props and jets at the same time, took the cue. It announced short ly before the Lockheed contract was disclosed that it has started a huge jet transport. The Doug las plane not yet ordered by an airline, will carry 80 to 125 pas sengers at speeds of 550 miles per hour, making possible trans continental trips of four and one-half hours and New York Paris flights in six and one-half hours. It is scheduled to be ready in 1959. Turbo-prop engine is similar to a jet but has its power har nessed to propeller instead of generating jet thrust. The 35 new planes ordered by Ameri can Airlines are scheduled for delivery between late 1958 and mid-1959. v Lockheed and American said the planes will fly 100 miles an hour faster than "the fastest tur-. bo-prop commercial airliner in service today." ; That was an obvious reference to the British Viscount. Capital Airlines has ordered 60 Vis counts at a cost of $67,000,000 and will begin to put them into service late this summer. Britain, foregoing further de velopment . of piston engine planes after World War II, turn ed out the turbo-prop Viscount and the illfated Comet jet. The latter was grounded after a se ries of accidents. Larger Comets with stronger structures now are being built and will be in a competitive race, apparently, with the Amer ican Douglas plane. San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is more than three and one-half miles long and a half mile wide. Crazy-Quilt Weather Pattern Brings Wind, Rain, Sweltering Heat To Nation By UNITED PRESS A crazy-quilt weather, pattern today had Texas and Oklahoma recovering from tornadic winds and gully washing rains and the Far West sweltering in a 100 degrees-plus heat wave. In the East, meanwhile, a stag nant low pressure area allowed chilly Greenland air to slip down as far as New York City. Tornado-battered Texas was whipped last night by at least five twisters, winds of hurricane force and dust storms which cut visibility to zero. U.R) Fire sup pression crews began a week long mop up today of a forest fire which burned some 500 acres of brush and reproduction timberland on the slope of Mt. Shasta,, northeast of Weed. The fire, second of the young season in extreme Northern California, was brought under control yesterday after it burned for two days. About 50 men, mdstly from the Shasta-Trinity Forest, have been left in the area to check for hidden fires and hotspots. The blaze for a while yester day threatened to close off the Southern Pacific mainline from California to Oregon. At one stage, the fire straddled the tracks. away most of the tents housing 500 high school students attend ing ROTC training. Dust storms also shrouded the Texas cities of Lubbock, Big Spring, and Odessa as a cold front whisteled into the state. The temperature went to a blazing 118 degrees in the Cali fornia desert cities of Needles Eastern Seaboard Water Levels Low Washington (U.R) Water levels were below average and many of them at or near record low stages in 85 per cent of the key wells tested during May, the U.S. Geolpgical Survey re ported today. , . Streamflow was reported to be deficient in almost all states along the Atlantic Seaboard and as far west as Northeastern In diana. Streamflow also was deficient during May in the southern half of Texas and most of New Mexi co, Arizona, Colorado, Utah and part of Nevada. The heat relaxed a little far ther north, but not much. It was 108 in Red Bluff, Calif., yes terday. Even Portland, had 96 degree heat yesterday and it was 85 at Seattle. The festival, blessed so far by weather that has been, if any thing, too warm, rolled into high gear today with visits aboard Navy ships tied up in the harbor and the "Starlight "Serenade" musical at the stadium tonight. Farm Loan Numbers Increasing, is Report Grants Pass A growing number of farm improvement loans, largely for irrigation, are being made by Josephine and Jackson county farmers, accord ing -to William N. Young Jr.. county supervisor of the soil and water loan program of the farmers home administration. Young advised that farmers planning irrigation system in stallations can obtain such as sistance from the Soil Conserva tion Service, Extension Service, other agencies, or from private sources at the farmers' own ex pense. To be considered eligible for a soil and water loan, the appli cant must be unable to obtain the necessary credit on reasonable terms and conditions from pri vate or cooperative sources, and meet other conditions, Young added.
