O SLEEP, why do you leave me?
Why your visionary joys remove?
O sleep, again deceive me.
To my arm restore my
wandering love.
Congreve.
There are about 80,000 den
tists in the United States. Only
about 1,100 are women. An un
usual number of feminine doc
tors of dentistry are red haired.
Why so many flaming tressed
females have chosen dentistry as
a career, I cannot say. I have
asked our Horses and Women
experts to check. All feminine
dentists strongly object to being
referred to as "lady dentists."
Keep that in mind, sir, if you are
ever going to have your teeth
given a going over by a red
haired feminine doctor of den
National Steeplechase.
Get It Right
Note the current stage hit,
"Damn Yankees," described as
"the first baseball, musical com
edy." That's wrong. There was
one titled "The Umpire," starr
ing Edmund Hayes. Also, at the
old Hippodrome, a musical show
was produced in which a base
ball diamond with players in
action was shown on the stage.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. Is
Scott Joplin, composer of the
"Maple Leaf Bag," still living?
A. Joplin died in 1917. He com
posed the "Maple Leaf Rag" in
1899. . . Q. I claim the girls of
San Francisco have the best com
plexions in the USA. Right? A.
Nearly right. According to the
experts, the young women of
Portland,, Ore., have the best
complexions. San Francisco girls
are second . . . Q. Are you famil
iar with a poem about neckties
titled "Give Me a Wild Tie,
Brother"? A. Believe it was writ
ten by Stoddard King. Same fel
low who wrote the hit. song,
"There's a Long, Long Trail."
Bride's Figure
As for a woman in her 40s re
taining her "brides figure," I
heard of one who has exactly
the same measurements as her
two daughters, both in their
early 20s. This streamlined moth
er and her two daughters wear
each other's clothes. Their meas
urements are bust, 34; waist, 24;
and hips, 34.

Discussing the current cinema
heartthrobs, a somewhat sophis
ticated and very experienced
woman observed, "Women like
he-men, and the cinema actors
who are most popular with
feminine audiences continue to
prove it. The craze of the present
day woman for actors is en
lightening. It shows how in
tensely most women are bored
with their husbands. Most mod
ern men are all nerves and no
passion."
Asides
Know a young woman who is
to be a June bride? Included in
her wedding presents should be
a copy of that helpful book by
Linda Marvin titled "Housekeep
ing Made Easy." . . . What's the
record for a long wait for a first
child? An , Illinois couple had
their first child after thirty years
of marriage. Father was 56 at
the time. Mother 47. It was a
boy.
Character Analysis
What is the extent of your be
lief in the reading of character
by handwriting? One organiza
tion in .Chicago employs a hand
writing expert in its credit de
partment. He looks over the let
ters of applicants for credit and
then decides by the handwriting
whether or not the applicant is
a good risk.
Please Note ,
California is in again with
something top. Now it is the in

recently attended the fiftieth
wedding anniversary of his son
Harry at Huntington Beach,

Symond's Killers Effort To Seize To Be Continued
Singapore (U.R) Harry
Best Livingstone, crown coun
sel, told a coroner's inquiry into
the murder of United Press staff
correspondent Gene Symonds to
day that the investigation and
efforts to apprehend the kill
ers will not end when the pres
ent inquiry closes.
Livingstone made his state
ment in an opening address to
coroner's inquiry.
He said a number of persons
had been arrested in connection
with the riots which took place
at the time Symonds was killed.
He did not indicate that any
body had yet been charged with
Symond's murder.
The "investigation will con
tinue" even after the inquiry is
over, Livingstone said.
The inquiry went , into its sec
ond day today and perhaps will
be completed tomorrow.
Symonds died May 13 after
being assaulted by a mob. He
was stoned and beaten in the
street and died in a hospital.
One witness testified yester
day he tried to get police help
for Symonds after he was at
tacked by the mob.
Other witnesses told how a
police car drove past Symonds
without stopping to help him
The United Press retained
counsel and asked or a full and
fair inquiry into the facts of
Symonds' death in the interests
of protecting American foreign
correspondents everywhere.
