FOURTEEN MEDFORD (OREGOWJ MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, June 7, 1S55 Big Celebrations Wait Released Fliers on Return to Home Towns Omaha, Neb. (U.R) Three American flien, freed by the Chinese Communists after two long years in Red prison camps, flew home today to joyous wel comes in .their Midwest home towns. Capt. Harold Fischer Jr., 1st Lt. Lyle . Cameron, andW 1st Lt Roland W. Parks left Hono lulu with their families last night on the final lap of their long voyage home. The fourth flier freed by the Chinese Reds last Memorial day, Lt. Col. Edwin L. Heller of Wynnewood, Pa., elected to stay in Hawaii about two weeks more for treatment of a leg which was injured when he bail ed out over North Korea. Body of Korean Stowaway Found; Second Hunted Half Moon Bay, Calif. 01.R) A search for a young Korean; stowaway who vanished from a freighter at sea was centered along the coast near here today after the body of his companion washed ashore on El Granada Beach. An object resembling another body was sighted several hun dred yards off shore, but a search by boat yesterday failed to locate it. The two youths disappeared from the Pacific Far East Line freighter Sea Serpent early Sun day as the ship completed a voy age from Long Beach, Calif., to San Francisco. They apparently escaped from J a locked stateroom after Drean- ing handcuffs with which they had been shackled to, their bunks. Clad m Life Jacket Painters working on a shore tide restaurant at El Granada lighted the body of one of the youths in the surf yesterday and pulled it in to shore. It was still clad in a red life jacket sten ciled with the words "Sea Serpent." San Mateo Coroner Paul Jen sen identified the body as that of either Fung Nat Gon, 17, or Kim Fang Chull, 16, the two stowaways. Both were from Pu- san, Korea. They stowed aboard the Sea Serpent before it left Pusan April 19. They left the ship when it docked at Ocean Falls, British Columbia, believing it was the United States, but were discover ed in a church and put aboard the Sea Serpent again for return to Korea. : They were placed in irons for the voyage to Long Beach and San Francisco. The special Air Force Con stellation carrying the three re turning fliers landed at Travis Air Force Base near San Fran cisco at 2 a.m. (PST) for an hour's refuelling stop. Fliers Surprised The fliers met with a surprise when they got off the plane to stretch their legs. There to greet them were two aunts of Cam eron, Mrs. Eugene Schuman of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. C. F. Bingham of El Cajon, Calif.; Fischer's uncle, Arlee Butter- field of San Bernardino, Calif., and an old buddy of Fischer's from Iowa State University, Ger ald Schenck of Sacramento, Calif. The big plane then sped east ward for a 6 a.m. (PST) touch down at Offutt Air Force Base here aiyl the "cheers and hand shakes of the hometown folks who saw the three fliers go away to war years ago. The keys of Omaha were wait ing for Parks. A brass band was to greet Cameron at Lincoln, Neb., and the hamlet of Swea City, la., planned the biggest blowout in its history for Fischer. The three returning fliers were in good condition for their homecoming tanned and rested after five days in Hawaii with their families. They also had a lot of lipstick to rub off their faces before they Eureka Forest Fire Nearly Controlled Eureka, Calif. (U.R) Cali fornia's first major forest fire of the season was expected to be brought under control today af ter burning through more than 400 acres of cut-over timber and threatening a valuable stand of Douglas fir. A 20-mile-an-hour dry wind that fanned the blaze yesterday died down last night and most of the 400 firefighters were re leased from the firelines. About 100 men were retained to seal off the blaze. Earl Madray, U. S. Forest Ser vice spokesman, said he believed the fire would be brought under control before noon today. The flames broke out Sunday in rugged terrain 50 miles northeast of here along U. S. Highway 299. The highway was closed temporarily but was re opened yesterday. A wind, coupled with high temperatures, had made the area tinder dry and created critical fire conditions for the area, For est Service officials said. greet the home folks. The fliers got a bumper share of kisses last night in an emo tional farewell from Hawaii. Heller, their companion in captivity, and his wife arrived at the hangar to say goodbye and to pass out leis all around. Heller kissed all the mothers. His wife then kissed the three departing fliers, their fathers, and their brothers. The kissing continued as the wives of Air Force officers lined up to bid the three airmen a warm goodbye. Heller Happy HeUer admitted he felt "a little emotion" when the Con stellation took off. But he also had reason to be happy because the medics have told him that his leg, crippled when he bailed out of his Sabre jet fighter over North Korea, will heal and leave him fit to fly again. Parks had already got his first turn at a plane's controls since his capture by the Communists A few hours before his depar ture he went up in a T33 jet trainer and put it through its paces. "It ' was really wonderful to get back in an airplane again, he said. The. fliers . all have 30 day leaves to spend at home and re cover from their captivity. During that time they will re ceive orders from the Air Force directing them to their next duty station. And, for the time being all questions about their future will be decided by the Pentagon in Washington. Intelligence officers there were already going over masses of information gained from the fliers during hours of intensive questioning in Hawaii.
