Granted that indications for removal of lymphoid tissue (ton sils and adenoids) from the throat are subject to individual judgment, I submit, says a la ryngologist (throat specialist) of high standing, in what he calls a defense of tonsillectomy, that in the opinion of the country's leading laryngologists the re sults of tonsillectomy, compe tently performed, lead to an ex tremely high percentage of good results. I add that the mortality (death rate) is one of the lowest of the surgical procedure; and that, because of a rare complica tion (cardiac arrest heart stops beating) its condemnation is no more justified than would be that of hernirrophy (radical operation for hernia, rupture, breach) if fpllowed by pulmo nary embolism (blocking of pul monary artery supplying the lung, or one of its branches, by a bit of clot or other foreign material). The specialist's concern about 'cardiac arrest" is probably due to irritation at my comment on this way of saying the heart has ceased to beat one of the tragic things that may happen in the course of or shortly after any major operation, I do not be lieve and did not mean to imply that it is more likely to happen during or immediately after ton- On The Side By E. Lowell That dance known as the "shimmy" was once legally de fined as follows: "a rhythmical shaking and shivering of parts of the body, synchronized and performed to a personalized, syn copated musical rhythm and ac companied by appropriate songs." Camera Shy What First Lady would you say was the most photogenic? Tnrirlpnlallv. nnp First Lady hated being photographed. She avoided the photographers whenever possible. That was Abraham Lincoln's wife, Mary. Mrs. Lincoln gave as her reason for this that the photographs always made her hands "appear ton laree." She also refused to pose with her husband because of the great difference in their height. Infants The weight of a child is always reported at birth. Height is never mentioned. Yet the height is important. Check it at birth of your next child. Then you can use it to determine whether the infant will be short or tall upon becoming an adult. The height at birth is about 30 per cent of what it will be when the infant becomes an adult. For example, if it is a boy and measures be tween 21 and 22 inches at birth, he will be a six footer at 19. . Asking Queries from clients. Q. What was the name of the great poet who was a bricklayer 'by trade? A. Een Jonson, who wrote "Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes" and many other beautiful poems and songs. . . .Q. What is the record for number of Caesa rean births by one woman? A. Mrs. W. G. Shriver of Toledo, O., is said to have had 10 Ceasarean births. A1M0 children are still living. All delivered by the same physician, Dr. Martin Diethelm of Toledo. Please Note A surprising number of sup posedly well informed persons are unable to answer offhand the following two simple ques tions: 1 What was Joan of Arc's last name? That is, her surname. 2 As to the biblical tale of Joseph and his brethren, how many brothers did Joseph have? Asides When your dreams are logi cal it indicates you are not get ting a sound sleep. Electricians in Oak land, Calif., are reported to be paid $10 an hour for work they do on Saturday or Sunday. That's $80 a day! Success The success of a single re cording started the Andrews Sisters climbing . the ladder of fame. That was their recording of "Bei Mir Bist du'Schoen" written by Jacob Jacobs and Sholem Seconda. Until then, the Andrews girls were unknown and getting nowhere. That re cording was made nearly 25 years ago. Since that time the Andrews Sisters have earned more than $5,000,000. I do say It happens often enough during or follow ing tonsillectomy to make ton sillectomy unjustifiable. It seems to me that the ever ready operators who still prac tice and defend tonsillectomy fail to recognize a significant fact, namely, that children's ton sils become enlarged in the win ter and spring and spontaneously shrink again in the summer and autumn. . From the six points the laryngologist makes in his de fense of tonsillectomy, it would appear that this throat special ist, like most operators who at tempt to "get every bit of torfsil tissue,' has forgotten, if he ever learned, the pathology of the tonsils. He takes for granted, without any scientific evidence to warrant the assumption, that enlargement (hypertrophy) ot the tonsils indicates infection. This, I contend, is stupid. The very fact that enlarged hyper trophic tonsils shrink to what the doctor calls normal size if or when the child is permitted" to absorb the ultraviolet he should absorb through his skiij, his naked or nearly naked skin, in the summer, is evidence that en larged tonsils are not infected. If the ever-ready operators are not prepared' to reject the findings of the pathologist, par ticularly those 1 of the patholo gist who did autopsies on a thousand tonsils removed by good representative doctors in a midwest city which I'll cite in detail, if the laryngologist or any other reputable doctor insinu ates, I'm not sufficiently in formed to judge it seems to me they must plead guilty to perpe trating an atrocity on children with enlarged tonsils. That bears a striking resemblance to the Chinese who, if you believe cock-and-bull stories, pay the doctor while they remain well, but stoo paying when they get sick. The toothbrush ing gesture saves no teeth from decay. You may brush your head off. but you must-employ a dentist if you want to save your teeth. Poor Man's Insulin The day after we learned that our young daughter had diabetes we saw an item in your column about "poor man's insulin" . . . (D. M. R.)
