Ak rte A hardtop is a car that looks like a Convertible with the top up but has a solid steel roof overhead and no center posts in the side window areas. Up until just recently, it could be built in volume only with two doors not more because it would tak wholly new structural principles to hinge another set of doors with out floor-to-roof center posts. i But Buick came up with those new struc tural principles and is now building in volume hardtops with four doors. You see one pictured here. It's the 4-Door Riviera. And it's taking the country by storm I.. Because here, at long last, is an automobile Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry Most Popular as Ice Battle Creek, Mich. (U.R) Ice cream .that tastes like peanut butter is making a hit with the moppets this summer but most soda fountain customers aren't impressed: They'll take vanilla. Or maybe chocolate or strawber ry. Flavors come and flavors go, a manufacturer of ice cream flavoring reported today, but vanilla, chocolate and straw berry go on forever, in that order, as the most popular on the list. Especially among older peo ple, said Jason Bloomberg, vice president and sales manager of the R. W. Snyder Co. "Children will go for anything new and stick with it for a while. But when they grow up they seem to switch back to one of the old standbys," he said. Since a lot of ice cream cones are consumed by the younger, more adventurous class, whole sale flavor companies like R. W. Snyder compete hotly in the field of new, unheard-of flavors. 100 Flavors in Stock Bloomberg said his firm has more than 100 different flavors New Certified Mail Service Will Start At PO on Tuesday A new "certified mail" serv ice will go into effect in the Uni ted States postal system on Tues day, June 7, it was announced by postal officials here today. The new service will supple ment, the present registry sys tem. It will provide a record of delivery of first class and air mail having no intrinsic value, the same as registered mail does now, but the certified mail serv ice will be less expensive. The rate for certified mail will be 15 cents, compared to 30 cents for registered mail, plus the reg ular air or surface rates. Receipts Available If the sender wants a return receipt for the certified mail, an additional charge of seven cents will be made. Postal officials here said that they believe the new certified mail service will be of consider able value, and will bring about a considerable saving in postage for those businessmen who send registered letters that contain no valuables. For mail contain ing valuables, that should be in sured, the registered mail will still be available. Certified mail stamps will be available for the public and for collectors on June 7. for this uifScffo new kind ofhardtefb- TreJ-, Cream Flavors in stock, guaranteed to tickle the most jaded palate. Some of the more exotic ones are cranberry, Dutch apple, nesselrode pudding, spiced raisin, banana puree and the popular "peanut butter swirk." When someone gets an .idea for a new flavor, a small sample is made up in the company lab oratory. Then it is mixed into a batch of ice cream and all the employees line up with a dish. If they like it, it goes on the mar ket. The University of Pennsylva- Historical Society Sets Annual Dinner The annual dinner meeting of the Southern Oregon Historical Society, Inc., will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 6, in the Masonic building in Jackson ville, it was announced today by Miss Claire Hanley, president. Dr. Donald A. MacDougall, assistant professor of social science at Southern Oregon col lege, will be the speaker. The dinner will be served by ladies of the Eastern Star, Miss Hanley said, and there will be a brief business meeting. Follow ing the dinner, the group will visit the Jacksonville museum. The public is invited to attend the event, Miss Hanley reported, and she asked that those wishing to attend make reservations with Mrs. Edith Gifford, telephone 2-6487. Exclusive from Sunnybank! Thrill Friday, June 3, 19SS Change nia cooperates by testing Snyder products for purity. Often some one at the university comes up with an idea for a new concoc tion. When a new flavor is loosed upon the world, there is no teU ing how people will react. Coffee-flavored and black walnut ice cream have never gone over well in Michigan or some of the other Northern states while in the South they are all the rage, Bloomberg said. Matter of Taste The Midwest currently is lick ing its lips over Dutch apple, but in some areas farther west you can hardly give the stuff away. Bloomberg has learned that even the color of ice cream is a matter of local choice. His com pany sends a bottle of color con centrate with each wholesale shipment of flavoring so the ice cream maker can give his prod uct the exact shade preferred in his territory. "Strawberry ice cream in the East is usually pale pink," said Bloomberg. "The farther west you go the deeper the color be comes, until it is almost red in some parts of California. But it still tastes like strawberry from coast to coast."
