TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, June 3, 1955 Fliers Released From China Prison Enjoying Happy Reunion With Families Honolulu (U.R) Four Amer ican airmen just released from Chinese Communist prison camps rushed into the arms of their families today in an emo tion packed reunion that ended more than two years' separation. A gleaming silver-white Air Force Constellation carrying nine relatives of the fliers land ed at Hickam Field at 9:51 a.m. (PST). The airmen, who arrived here from Hong Kong yesterday, were waiting excitedly at the field when their breathlessly happy families stepped off the special chartered plane. The long awaited reunion al most took place earlier than ex pected because the Constellation picked up tailwinds after leaving Travis Air Force Base, Calif., and was flying as much as an hour and 15 minutes ahead of schedule. But when the big "happiness plane" got into the Honolulu area it was directed to circle overhead so military officials would have time to rush the fliers to Hickam. But when the Constellation taxied down the runway nine minutes ahead of schedule the airmen, excited as small boys vith new bicycles, were ready and waiting for their loved ones. Each flier carried "two Vanda orchid leis to present to mem bers of his family. "If they did a cardigraph of my heart now they would sure get a reaction," Capt. Harold E. Fischer of Swea City, la., said. The fliers, dressed in new sun tan uniforms, stood in the center of a crowd of military and press representatives as the plane came in. Four blue Air Force sedans also were waiting to take the fliers and their families to a half hour private reunion in an Army barracks. The Air Force flew the nine relatives to Hawaii for a five day reunion with the freed air men. The trip cost the relatives nothing. The fliers are: Jet ace Capt. Harold E. Fisch er, 30, Swea City, la., shot down April 7, 1953; Lt. Col. Edwin I. Heller, 36, Wynnewood, Pa., downed Jan. 23, 1953; 1st Lt. Lyle W. Cameron, Lincoln, Neb., shot down Oct. 26, 1953; and 1st Lt. Roland W. Parks, 24, Omaha, Neb., shot down Sept. 4, 1952. The Chinese Communists or dered them released Tuesday af ter finding them guilty of flying over China during the Korean war. They arrived here Wed nesday after a flight from Hong Kong. At a press conference Wed nesday night Heller and Fischer side-stepped questions about fly ing over Communist territory and signing confessions. Heller was asked whether he had been shot down over North Korea or in Manchuria. "I think we had better let that question slide for a while," he said. Fischer, a double ace of the Korean war, was asked if he signed a "confession" to the crimes of which the Reds ac cused him. He replied with a prompt "no" when asked if he were forced to sign a confession after his trial. But when the report er asked if he signed a confes sion before the trial, he hesi tated and said: "I think. I will wait and see my lawyer" before answering that question." Asked about "brainwashing," Fischer admitted the four were subjected to intensive "study periods." He said the Chinese called it "brain-changing." Asked if the Reds tried to change the airmen's thinking to pro-Communist, Fischer re plied: "No doubt you are acquainted with the types of treatment at tempted in North Korea. Well, the - same treatment was tried with us." All four said their treatment at the hands of the Chinese Communists was "good." Railway Trainmen Vote On Possible Union Merger Cleveland (U.R) Directors of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen voted today to begin negotiations on a possible merger ger with the proposed amalga mated AFL and CIO. It was the first such move by any of the operating railroad brotherhoods. Children Under 15 Lead in Rabies Deaths Chicago (U.R) Children un der 15 accounted for more than half the total deaths caused by rabies from 1943 to 1951, ac cording to the American Veter inary Medical Association. Twenty per cent of the total death; were in the five to nine year age group, 19 per cent in the 10 to 12-year group. Thirteen per cent of the deaths were in children under five.
