Prep Gang Slates AAU Meet Trip Medford will be well repre sented when High School Track Coach Bob Newland takes a crew of 10 thinclads to Portland for the AAU track and field meet Saturday afternoon and evening. The aggregation will be made up largely of sophomores. Among them are Eldon Francis, state javelin champ; Wally Larson, hurdler, and Neil Plumley, shot putter, all members of the state prep championship squad. Other sophs will be Les Ling scheit, miler; Pete Kershaw, quarter-miler; and Jerry Close, broad jumper. Lew Breazeale, vaulter, will be lone junior on the squad. Ninth graders slated to go are Mike Russell, hurdler and quarter-miler; Terry Berg man, high jumper, and Tom Mer ton, discus thrower. Breazeale, Larson and Fran cis will vie in the high school division, Plumley in both high school and junior divisions and the others in the junior bracket. Gals' Night Set At Ashland Track Ashland Ashland Speedway will again be the scene of some topnotch stock car racing when the hardtops report for duty Sat urday night. With a layoff from racing last week, many of the drivers may be a little throttle happy this week. This indicates thrill-packed racing. The oil track proved a hit with fans in the last race. Several gallons of waste oil have been put on the track, eliminat ing dust considerably. The track should be in excellent condition. The management has an nounced that Saturday will be ladies night. All 'adies will be admitted free. Hardtops als- lay a part in the Elks parau4 which will be held Saturday afternoon. All drivers who appear in the parade have been invited to attend the buffalo barbeque feed of the Ash land Elks during the state con vention at the athletic field. Crock Hunter, winner of the last main event, will be out to chalk up his third win of the season. Ed Butler, who rolled his car May 18 has his car in tip top shape and reports he will be out to win. RACERS EYE EMIGRANT REGATTA Out board motorboat skippers of Oregon and northern California are awaiting Sunday action in the annual regatta at Emigrant lake southeast of Ashland. Shown above are two boats in a previous race, Carl Riiho, Coquille, leads Pete Mobley, Eugene, around a buoy in a B utility event. Riiho was one of last year's winners. This week end's regatta, sponsored by the Western Speedboat association and Medford Junior Chamber of Commerce, will feature eight events. There will be two contests for fishing boats and six for the speedier racing hulls. Fishing boat contention starts at 11 a.m. with speedboats to take to the water at 1 p.m. Bill Barnes, Mel and Jerry McGrew and Dick Schauble are among local racers entered. Salmon Fishing Slow on Rogue Portland (U,P.) The week ly report on fishing conditions prepared by the State Game com mission: SOUTHWEST: Tenmile lake fair on spinners and worms; Loon lake good with 'a few bass also being taken; Smith river slow; a few salmon in at Win chester bay; Coquille river fair to good; south fork of Coos riv er fair to good; shad fishing on Coos excellent; red headed fly and orange bead with silver hook best for shad. A few chinook and some large halibut taken just over Coos Bay bar. Lower Rogue slow for sal mon; trout fishing good on Chet co, Winchuck, Pistol, Elk and , Sixes rivers, and fair on Floras and Garrison lakes; spinners and worms best. Chinook fishing slow on mid dle and upper Rogue; Shady Cove fair to good for trout; Up per Umpqua river areas slow; salmon season closed through out the system above Highway 38 bridge at Scottsburg May 31. Roberts on Way To Big Season Philadelphia (U.R) No pitcher ever has won 30 games for a second- division team but don't put it past Robin Roberts of the Phillies. Roberts scored his eighth win of ' the season ' Wednesday night when he hurled the Phillies to a 3-1 decision over the Cubs. In 1952 when he won 28 games Roberts didn't score his eighth victory until June 20 when he made his record 8-5. His current mark is 8-3. Harris, List Take 4th Spot in ABC Tourney Fort Wayne, Ind. (U.R) A fourth place change in doubles competition marked the first major shift in nearly a month in standings at the American Bowl ing Congress tournament. Bob Harris and Fred List, San Antonio, Tex., put together a 1293 tally yesterday for a spot in the top doubles bracket. List, 29, had a 713 series for his fifth ABC tournament. It was the third try for Harris, 34, who turned in a 580 series. MedfordWTribune sipoDimrs Bisplinghoff Defeats Cudd In British Amateur Hassle St. Annes, England (U.R) Walker cupper Bruce Cudd of Portland, Ore., lost out today in the fifth round of the British Amateur Golf tournament to a fellow American. Cudd dropped a 4 and 2 de cision to Don Bisplinghoff, a 20-year-old player from Orlan do, Fla. Earlier today, Cudd defeated Arthur Walker of South Africa. 1-up. St. Annes, England (U.R) Nine American golfers, led by Billy Joe Patton and Don Bis plinghoff, swept in the fifth round of the British amateur championships today by winning their morning matches. (U.R) Fun eral arrangements were expected to be announced today for R. W. (Dick) Burnett, a ruddy, one time country boy who enjoyed dabbling in baseball as much as he did in building up oil for tunes. The portly 57-year-old Burnett, who paid an estimated $600,000 for. the Dallas Texas League franchise and then poured nearly that much again into the club, died unexpectedly of a heart attack in a Shreve port, La., hotel room Wednesday. Catcher Ron Bottler Suffers Arm Fracture Portland (U.R) Ron Bottler, the promising young catcher who was farmed by the Portland Beavers to Columbus, Ga., of the Sally League, has suffered a broken left arm, Bevo General Manager Joe Ziegler said today. Bottler was hurt on a play at the plate. Ziegler said Bottler, who had become the team's No. 1 catcher, would remain in the South while the arm mends. Shooting in the Elks rivalry will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with 100 targets at 16 yards, 100 handicap birds and 25 pairs of doubles. Five-man teams will battle also for the various lodges with scores to depend on per formances in the 16-yard and handicap individual events. Klamath Falls perpetual trophy goes to high team in 16-yard firing. For individuals in 16-yard ac tivity there will be trophies to winners in each class. In the handicap a trophy will be pre sented to winner and runner up while high gun gets doubles hardware. There will be a high overall award. The Mail Tribune shoot will be registered under the Pacific International Trap shooting as sociation. Shooters will vie for the Mail Tribune trophy in the 100-yard 16-yard shoot. Trophies go to winners and runners-up in each class, to high lady and high junior. The Mendenhall trophy is awarded to high gun for Class B and lower. Second event Sunday will be the $300 Medford handicap. There will be hardware for win ner and runner-up in each class of the doubles. Bruce Cudd, the 21-year-old Walker Cupper from Portland, Ore., was the other U.S. winner who had to sweat out his victory on the Royal Ltham and St. Annes course. Cudd had to play 20 holes to defeat Arthur Walk er of South Africa, 1 up. Conrad, Jackson Din Lt. Joe Conrad of San Anton io,T ex., and Jim Jackson of Glendale, Mo., two other Walk er cuppers, won easily. Jim McHale of Wynnewood, Pa.; Cpl. James Bernard of West bury, Mass.; George Coleman of Miami, Okla.; and Barton Bridge port of San Francisco were the other Americans who won their morning matches. Three Americans were elimin ated in the second round Wed nesday morning and eight in the third round in the afternoon, two of the latter group by fellow-Americans. Among the most prominent U.S. casualties of the Wednesday firing were Frank Strafaci of Mineola, N.Y., seven-time metropolitan New York amateur champion, and Charles Chick Evans Jr., of Chicago, for mer U.S. Open and Amateur champion. ' Thursday, June 2, 19SS MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUrTB THIHTEEK Rogue Valley QTs Play Rose burg Here On Night of June 16 The Rogue Valley QTs, girls Softball team from Eagle Point, will play the Roseburg Lumber jills at Fairgrounds park here on Thursday night, June 16, it was announced today. The game, to start at 6:30 p.m., will be a preliminary to another girls' game pitting Erv Lind Florists of Portland and Klamath Falls, Oregon girls' champions. The Lumberjills finished fourth in the state softball tour nament for the past two years, and along with the Rogue Val ley team, are again strong con tenders for the championship. The Medford game will give fans an idea as to how the two clubs will stack up in tourney play. The Lumberjills boast several all-state players who are dia mond veterans. Last year the QTs won two out of three games from the Roseburg team. Local fans will have an op portunity to see the top two Oregon girls', teams in action when the Florists and Klamath collide at 8 p.m. The Florists are former world champions and are regarded as having an ex cellent chance to regain the title during the world tournament at Portland later this summer. Klamath Falls, which won the state championship last yeax, is given an excellent chance to re peat this year. HOGUE OPTIONED Pittsburgh (U.R) The Pitts-" burgh Pirates today sent-righthander Cal Hogue to Williams port of the Class A Eastern League on option. Hogue had just rejoined the Pirates Wednes day from Hollywood of the Pa cific Coast League, where his record was one victory and no defeats. MOORE CONFIDENT Summit, ,N. J. (U.R) Light heavyweight champion Archie Moore, in training here for his title bout with Carl Bobo Olson in New York's Polo Grounds, June 22, said today he is con fident he . "can lick Olson." Moore did not box Wednesday but plans workouts for the next four days. Tests Show Stimulant; Race Couple Suspended Portland (U.R) A Portland couple has been suspended from racing mounts at Portland Mead ows as a result of tests which showed the presence of a stimu lant in one of their entries. Sus pended were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Leigh of Portland. The trainer, Ed Crosson, also was suspended. Cecil Edwards, presiding stew ard for the Oregon State Racing Commission, said tests on Pic nicker, winner of the fourth Memorial Day race, showed def inite evidence that the horse had been stimulated.
