Prevention of Before physicians knew any thing about vitamins some of them considered cod liver oil the best remedy for chronic rheuma tism. Joint disability lasting a year or more was just plain rheu matiz in the nineteenth century, generally ascribed to "exposure to cold and damp." In the twen tieth century the diagnosis be came "arthritis." Now there's a malady a re sourceful practitioner can ex ploit endlessly. Service M.D. the Rheumalix . of paying for the very latest ex periment that gives "promise" of curing arthritis. I do not mean to imply that arthritis (joint inflammation) doesn't occur. Streptococcic, pneumococcic, tuberculous, syph ilitic, and gonorrheal infection of the joint is properly called arth ritis. In most instances of real arth ritis, if the trouble lasts more than a year, there is a history of acute inflammation in the be ginning heat, pain, redness, and swelling of the joint, usually as sociated with some elevation of body temperature (fever). In chronic rheurhatiz there's no such history, as a rule. The trou ble develops gradually in any weather or climate, in any walk of life month by month or year by year advances from bad to worse unless . . . The treatment, nf rpal arthritis is a health column. If you want medical advice, diagnosis, or the significance of any symptoms you may have worked up, con sult a physician. Chronic rheumatiz, in my opin ion, is physical degeneration of the joint or joints, due princi pally to nutritional deficiency through the years from early childhood . to breakfast this morning. In the past five years I have accumulated a bulging file of let ters from folks who declare that since they began following the advice I give in two pamphlets (to be mentioned below) their rheumatiz has been greatly re lieved or cured. The phamphlets are (1) Calcium and Rheumalix (2) Young Folks and Old Folks. For either pamphlet send stamped, self -addressed envelope. If you want both, enclose ten cents in addition. Ask for the pamphlets in writing and sign your request if you expect a re ply. I have no time for triflers. If my teachings about joint trouble strike you as pretentious or unreasonable, forget what I say. However, I assure you that DO IT YOURSELF Bet if you figured it out, you'd find that do-it-yourself idea is expensive in TV service. We do it faster, more dependably, more accurately.
