A ROUTINE TONSILLECTOMY A Routine Tonsillectomy For public consumption and the enlightenment of their com petitors, some of the ever-ready operators still boast that when they do a tonsillectomy, they get every bit of tonsil. That isn't all they get, in their blind hacking (in a field more or less obscured by bleeding). As the pathologist's autopsies on a thousand tonsils removed by representative men in the mid west city showed, they some times "get" pieces of throat mus cle and other normal tissues. Lest there be any misunder standing I should say here that in my opinion (1) Tonsillotomy instantaneous clipping or slicing off the ob structing portion is ade quate and justifiable treat ment for children with en larged tonsils. This is as quickly over with and as safe as extraction of a tooth. Actor Robert Stack wrote a guest column about his experiences in Tokyo on a movie location. By ROBERT STACK Written for the United Press Hollywood (U.R) Japan, where we made "House of Bam boo," is a world of paradoxes, a mixture of a residue of GI's 1 and a culture that goes back thousands of years. My first vis it to a geisha house was an i n comparable experience . . The geisha is Aline Mosby neither s 1 a ve nor doxy. Theirs is an honor able profession, their primary function to bring beauty to a man's life. What a geisha girl wants to make of her own life is up to her. To the average Japanese, she represents the way of existence he'd like to en joy at all times. We were waited upon hand and foot, fed, served drinks, and had our every wish attended to by not one but half a dozen lovely girls. Subtle Pantomime After dinner came another treat, dancing. The costumes, make-ups, hair-dresses are styl ized, the kind you see in the old prints. The geishas tell trjeir stories in expressive, subtle pantomime. I never did get the hang of the community geisha dance which takes place during the evening, so I probably set Japanese dancing back 5,000 years. The next night, we went to a Japanese night club where we witnessed a performance which would have given the Johnston Office apoplexy. It was present ed with a minimum of costum ing, but with all the simplicity and lack of self-consciousness of a group of children taking a bath in their birthday clothes. The Oriental's fantastic po liteness is in humorous paradox to a Tokyo taxi-driver. I went to a very small town in the out skirts with our star, Shirley Yamaguchi. She is one of Ja pan's biggest stars. We went in to a small store where she want ed to shop. Like Monroe The people crowded around her as they would Marilyn Mon roe here. Shirley introduced me, and their instantaneous charm and courtesy was inde scribable also their curiosity. You must partake of refresh ments. They drive like . . . well, like there is no tomorrow. Horn blowing is a national custom but never used to alert the pe destrian or another driver.
