TWO MIDfORD (OREGON) Holiday Brings Trips, Visitors; Author is Guest Traditionally the first week end holiday of the year is when residents make trips to the beach, the mountains or their lake cabins, and Memorial day this year is no exception. It is also a time when families get together and friends visit here. Mr. and Mrs. Darell Huson and daughter, Darelyn, 45 Lind ley street, left Saturday ior Lake o' Woods where they have a cabin. Mr. Huson made the trip in last week end to open the cab in and reported that the water in the lake is lower at this time of year than at any time he has seen it in many years. He re marked that the lake level now is as low as it was last fall when they closed their cabin for the winter. Among thos who left for the beach are Mr. and Mrs. Chester Guches and their son, Richard, of Griffin Creek, who are spend ing the week end at Crescent City, Calif., on the coast. Mrs. Pat Pierce is to arrive today from Portland to visit until Monday with Mrs. Dora Carnall, 106 South Holly street. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kruggel, former residents now of Portland . are visiting with their son-in- law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Mel Goguey, 428 Berrydale ave. and their sons and families, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kruggel Jr., 525 Boardman street, and the Rob ert Kruggels at 510 Alice st. The visitors moved from Medford last fall. Mrs. Grace Coleman with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Smith of San Jose, Calif., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Coleman, 1115 East 11th St., and Mr. and Mrs. Harry De Jarnett, Pioneer road, Phoenix. They will be here through the holiday. Mrs. Smith recently has had .published her first book, en titled, "Wind 'til Sundown," a story about 20th century pioneer ing in South Dakota. She writes under the nam of Verna Mox ley. College to Show Swedish Paintings Ashland An exhibition en titled "Swedish Children's Paint ings" will bt on view at, the Southern Oregon college library through June 25, Librarian Myrtle Funkhouser has an nounced. The exhibit is one cir culated by the Smithsonian In stitution traveling exhibition service and is sponsored by the Swedish Embassy. Every summer the school children of Sweden participate in a picture contest organized by a national magazine of Sweden. The results of the contest are then presented at the National Museum in Stockholm and a se lected exhibition goes on a tour of Swedish museums following that showing. The present trav eling exhibit of 60 paintings by children aged 7-14 is an out growth of that exhibition. Board Meeting And Workshop Planned by Club The executive board of Med ford Garden club will meet Tues day, May 31, at the home of Mrs. LeRoy Cline, 1421 Euclid avenue, at 8 p.m. The club will hold a morning workshop Thursday, June 2, at Girls' Community club at 9:30 a.m. on corsage making, with Mrs. Evelyn Tice in charge. Mrs. ' Tice asks those who attend to bring conditioned flowers, ma terial and tools to work with. There will be ribbon and mater ial for sale at. the club. A sack lunch will be served at noon; coffee will be furnished. The regular meeting of the club will convene at 2 p.m. The horticulture lesson will" be by Mrs. C. C. Sater on "China in your Garden." Installation of officers is plan ned. Tea chairman for the after noon will be Mrs. Harry Olsen. Student Name'd To Rally Squad Miss Sylvia Kain, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Kain, 140 Clover lane, has been selected for the 1955-56 rally squad at Oregon State college. He is com pleting her freshman year at the college and is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She is enrolled in lower division of liberal arts. Her parents moved to Med ford last fall and Miss Kain will spend the summer vacation here. They formerly lived in Portland. Adarel Chapter Adarel chapter, Order of East ern Star, will hold its regular meeting Thursday, June 2, at the Jacksonville Masonic hall at 8 p.m. The committee is Mr. and Mrs. Milton . Winn, Flonnie Wool dridge. Anna Langley and Mr. and Mrs. Vivian Wilson. Visitors are welcome. Stevenson, (far left) president of Southern Oregon college, and Dr. Ar thur S.Taylor (far right), chairman of the SOC alumni com Reunion Held At Ashland Ashland Classes from 1896 to 1909 were represented at a homecoming for graduates of the Old Southern Oregon Normal school held at Southern Oregon college May 21 and 22. Many more recent graduates, members of the current faculty, and four members of the SONS faculty at tended the reunion events. Fred C. Homes (class of 1898) Ashland, was elected president of the old-timers group, while Alice French Willits, (1907) Ash land, was named secretary. Members of the SONS faculty attending the reunion were, Alice Applegate ' PeiL Ashland; M. Armeda Kaiser, Oakland, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. Albert C. Joy, Harbor. A luncheon on Sunday, May 22, high-lighted the weekend's activities, at which Roland L. Parks (1929), Ashland, spoke on the heritage of the past as a link to the future. Master of cere monies was Dr. Arthur S. Tay lor, chairman of the social science department. SOC; Greet ings were extended by SOC President Elmo N. Stevenson. - Plan Announced For Joint Session Of Two Groups A joint meeting of the Med ford and Grants Pass Toast mistress clubs will be held in June when officers of the groups will be installed. The Medford club's nominat ing committee is made up of Mrs. Russell Wade, Mrs. C. A. Thatcher and Mrs. Zelda Van Valzah. The only July meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Eloise Winklebleck. At a meeting May 24 of the Medford club a report was read of an area meeting held in May at Victoria, B.C. Mrs. Arnold Bohnert gave her autobiography and Mrs. Frank J. Runtz gave a speech entitled "How To Live." Toastmistress was Mrs. Zelda Van Valzah. Mrs. Winklebleck was topic mistress. Miss Anna Streed was program evaluator and Mrs. George Mclntyre was the lexi cologist. Mrs. Harry Harshall served as speech evaluator. Miss Dorothy Lind Here from Iowa Miss Dorothy Lind, Iowa City, la., is visiting her uncle, Ernest Lind, and Mrs. Lind, 1421 Biddle road, and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lind and Erpie Lind of Merri man road. Today the group is making a trip to Crater lake. Miss Lind, a graduate of the University of Iowa, is a private secretary in an abstract and loan office in Iowa City. She. arrived Thursday by United airlines and plans t be here about a week. This is her second visit to the valley. Officer, Family Here From Japan Comdr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Durkin and their' three children have arrived in Medford to visit Mrs. Durkin's father. Earl B. Day. and Mrs. Day. The family came from Japan, where the commander has just completed a two-year tour of duty. They will be in Medford until the middle of next week. Mrs. Durkin is the former Nancy Day. Sunday Mir 29. 1933 Women Golfers Plan Luncheon; Group Plays Here Women's Golf association of Rogue Valley Country club will hold the monthly luncheon Thursday, June 2. Luncheon will be served at 1 p.m. in the main dining room. Mrs. Royal Bebb, social chairman and her com mittee are in charge of the luncheon and decorations. Any member not contacted by the communications committee may call Mrs. Bebb, 3-1581 for luncheon reservations. The Klamath Falls invita tional play scheduled for June 2 has been postponed to a later date in June. Breakfast Given In Grants Pass By Honor Society 'Omega chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, entertained members of Epsilon Chapter with a break fast at Grants Pass High school, Saturday morning, May 21. Reports of the recent state convention were given by Mrs. Alice Ottis, Mrs. Alice Gay, Miss Ina Freeman, Mrs. Alice Willits, Mrs. Mae Richardson, Mrs. Merle Woodward, Mrs. Lillie Calander, Mrs. Katneryn Stan cliffe, Miss Princess Egbert, and Miss Jennie Calhoun. Mrs. Ivah D. Murray and other members of the sorority took part in a ceremony com memorating the founders of the Honor Society. Gifts were presented by Epsi lon and Omega chapters to Miss Lenetta Quinlin, who is being married; and Mrs. Lillie Calan der who is moving to Decatur, Illinois. Family To Attend Rites, Graduation Mr .and Mrs. R .S. Martin and daughter, Miss Sally Martin, 928 South Holly street, will be in Enumclaw June 4 for the wed ding of the Martins' son, Ber nard R. Martin, and Miss Mar lene McCauley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis McCauley of that city. The following day they will be in Ellensburg for graduation ceremonies at Central Washing ton College of Education. Their son is a member of, the graduat ing class. (Southern Oregon college photos) John Ragsdale Named Trustee , John Ragsdale of Eagle Point, was elected a trustee of the Ore gon Associated Council of the Blind at a state meeting held May 21 in Portland. Walter Dry, superintendent of the Oregon State School for the Blind, was presented a plaque for outstanding service in the field of the blind in Oregon. The group voted to participate in the national white cane week in 1956, and a committee was formed to make the arrange ments. George Howeiler was elected delegate to attend a convention at Omaha for the National Feder ation of the Blind. In the event that Mr. Howeiler is sent as a representative of the state of Oregon, Robert Schauer will be the council's delegate and Miss Effie Westensee will be the al ternate. A group of friends' surprised the couple with the housewarming party. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Sands, Medford, and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Badger of North gate. Dr. Gilbert Close, pastor of Portalhurst church, read the double ring rites at 4 o'clock. Mrs. Ruth Borshell of San Fran cisco was honor attendant and Harold Hays of Los Angeles was best man. The reception was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Bolander and was at tended by families and close friends. Mr. and Mrs. Corbett and Mrs. Corbett's daughter, Christie Wei senburger, will live in North gate. Mr. and Mrs. Sands were in San Francisco for the wedding. Sister Arrives From Liverpool Mrs. Laura Smedley has ar rived in Medford from Liver pool, England, and is a guest of her sister, Mrs. Kenneth Swartz, and Mr. Swartz, Old Stage road. This, is Mrs. Smedley's first visit to the United States, and the journey was delayed for some time because of the recent strikes in England. The cere mony was performed by the Rev. D. E. Millard at the couple's new home at 132 North B street in Eagle Point. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Polk Smith, route 1, box 105, C street, Eagle Point, and the bridegroom is a son of Mrs. Gertrude Bishop, 717 South Peach, street, Medford. For . her . wedding the bride wore a light blue flowered dress with white accessories. Her cor sage was of wild orchids. Mrs. Viola Holm an aunt of the bride, was the honor attend ant. She wore a red crepe after noon dress with black accessor ies. Her corsage, also of wild flowers, was made of "mouse ears." N Corbett Smith, an uncle of the bride, was the best man. About 30 guests attended the wedding. Decorations about the rooms were of large iris blossoms in a variety of shades arranged with dogwood branches. The reception was held at the home. The bride served the wedding cake and Mrs. Ralph Koesler, her sister, served the punch. Coming from a distance to at tend the wedding was Mrs. Dolly Smith of Springfield. - The bridegroom was born in Medford and was graduated in 1945 from Medford Senior High school. He served with the Army for 9 months in the Aleutians. He is employed by Cascade Products at Camp White. The bride was born in Calif ornia but came to this vicinity with her parents when she was one month old. She has lived mainly in Butte Falls and at tended schools there. Birchfield-Read Ceremony Held In Church Here Prospect An 8 o'clock eve ning ceremony May 16 at St, Mark's Episcopal church wedded Miss Barbara Jeanne Read and Charles V. Birchfield. The bride, a daughter of Mrs. L. L. Moser, 65 Winema way, and L. A. Read of Portland, is a secretary at the Medford Junior high school, and the bridegroom is a photograph er. He is from Ashland and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Birchfield of that city. The Rev. Robert Greene, vicar of Prospect Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) performed the double ring rites. Miss Patricia Read, a sister of the bride, was the honor at tendant. Don Roy Trombley from Southern California, was the best man. The bride's father gave her in marriage. She wore a lavendar embossed cotton suit with white accessories and her corsage was a white orchid. . The honor attendant wore i white linen suit. Heraccessories were brown and she wore a red carnation corsage. The reception was held at the bride's home at 430 North Grape street. The an nouncement-was made by Mrs. Don Montieth, president of the group. Miss Clark plans to enter the training school at Good Sa maritan hospital in Portland this fall. Miss Clark has been active in many school groups including Future Homemakers of Amer ica, Junior Red Cross, Photog raphy club, anual staff, Girls' league, Girls' Athletic associa tion and Comettes, girls' pep club. She also sings in the choir at the Community Bible church. Central Point. The winner is the daughter of Mrs. Louise Clark, Route 2, Box 238. Medford. Her father died recently. Miss Clark has two brothers, one graduating from Central Point Junior High school and. the older one from Crater High school. Miss Clark was one of six can didates for the scholarship. Academic scholarship, physical health, personality, maturity, and financial need are considered in selecting the winner. Another eligibility requirement is that the grl be accepted by an Oregon school of nursing, Mrs. Montieth explains. The Nurses' Associa tion gives a scholarship to, a resi dent of Jackson county' each year. Instructor Plans To Leave Tuesday; Visitor Honored Eagle Point j Miss Terry Puliig, an instructor in zoology at the Louisiana State university at Baton Rouge, La., will leave Tuesday for Seattle en ronte to Honolulu, Hawaii after visiting here with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Swan. Last .Monday evening the Swans entertained at dinner hon oring another visitor in the val ley; Miss Bernice Hook. She has been visiting her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Del mar Logan at Shady Cove. Ham mers, 4069 South Pacific high way, has been awarded a scholar ship of $100 given by the Col lege Women's club of the Rogue River valley. Each year the club offers a scholarship to a girl . graduate in Jackson county. Miss Hammers is a 1955 grad uate of Phoenix High school, and has had a straight one grade in, her courses. She was valedictor ian of her class, and completed 22 units of high school work. She has worked in many school activities, was editor of the school paper, on the year-book staff, a member of the National Honor society, class officer, and member of the student council. She will attend Oregon State this fall, and will take the phar macy course there. 4 Annual Banquet Given by Teachers The annual -banquet of the Medford Grade Teachers assoc iation was held May 20 at Mon Desir dining inn, Central Point. About 20 members attended. Guests included E. H. Hedrick, superintendent of schools, and Mrs. Hedrick, Leonard Mayfield, assistant superintendent of schools, and Mrs.. Mayfield, and assistant superintendent, Elliott Becken, and Mrs. Becken.v Officers were installed follow- f"1? a program which included vocal solos by Mrs. G. E.
