CHICAGO'S PIERCE fJABS MOUHD DUEL WITH TRIBE'S SCORE 4-1 By CARL LUNDQUIST United Press Sports Writer Frank Lane makes more trades than a gang of school kids swapping bubblegum cards, but every time lefty Billy Pierce wins a game the White Sox gen eral manager is reminded that his first deal was his best. Since Lane acquired fierce lit tie Pierce from Detroit on Nov. 10, 1943, in an even swap for lumbering catcher Aaron Robin son, he has made an unofficial total of 217 deals involving more than 323 players. Robinson long since has departed from the ma jors, but Pierce, despite his oc casional handicap of a sore arm. has won 79 games with Chicago. Dazzling Duel Pierce, whose return to form is one of, the most encouraging phases of Chicago's strong pen nant fi,ht this spring, turned in one of his greatest triumphs Tuesday night, a three-hit 4-1 victorv at Cleveland in a daz zling duel with rookie lefty Herb Score. It was Billy's third win against two defeats. It was power pitching of the finest sort. There was but one hit on tither side for six innings, a single by Sam Dente of Chi cago. Bob Nieman singled for the first hit off Score in the seventh when each team scored a run. In the eighth Al Carras- quel and Nieman produced Homers to deliver three more runs and assure Pierce'I triumph. Scouting Changes Changes in scouting regula tions were authorized on a one year trial basis so that schools could scout their opponents twice with a man and once by moving picture if they wished. Previously, only three one-man looks had been permitted. The ban on college coaches and staff members watching high school and junior college football games on the campuses of the playing schools was re moved at the afternoon session.
