Don Malm- berg has to round up all those relatives Aline Mosby and friends who surprise the "star" (or vic tims, depending on how you look at it) on "This is your life." Malmberg has tracked them down by way of tom-toms in the African jungle and officers of the highway patrol. He makes an average of 200 calls per program and today, as I sat in his busy office, he waved his latest phone bill for S2.211.07. 'This is an exhausting job," he admitted. By now Malmberg knows many of the overseas telephone operators and he calls Africa as casually as you'd phone a drugstore. Malmberg found a Trinidad newspaperman who had helped Belbenoit escape in 1937. A man Belbenoit knew only as "Jungle Jim" of Panama turned up when Malmberg on a chance called the main hotel in the Central American city. Died in Paris "The only person we couldn't find was a Salvation Army man who was on Devil's Island in 1937. I put in 15 calls to London and Scotland and finally heard he died in Paris," Malmberg said. Science coaxed him forth in one of the prettiest displays of archaeological detective work. in a long time. But, alas, at the same time it debunked the pretty picture of knights joust ing with lances. The fact that King Arthur actually lived, fought and died and was not merely an inven tion of medieval storytellers (and Hollywood script writers) is a by-product of an inquiry by a team of scientists into Britain's "lost centuries" the years be tween 400 and 625 A.D. The British Broadcasting Cor poration, which does things like this, decided to ask the scientists what they could find out about the dark era when the Roman occupation was ending. The usual picture painted by histor ians is that of a britain popu lated mainly by illiterate peas ants and overrun by barbarians. There are two ways of mak ing scientific discoveries these days. One is to find something new. The other is to examine old NO MORE SOUVENIRS Medford. Mass. :'U.P; When the West Medford railroad sta tion was built in 1880 such things as semi-precious jewels, a whale's tooth and seasnells were imbedded in the outside walls. Local souvenir hunters have picked most of the objects from the walls since then. research in the light of techniques, which often pro duces just as many startling re sults. Operating much as detec tives do in assembling apparent ly unrelated clues into a cast iron case, the scientists came to this conclusion: The Britain of the lost centur ies was a land of great country houses and international ccm berce as well as of hovels. It had illiterate peasants, but it also had famous scholars such as Pelagius who argued with St. Augustine for humanism in Chrisitanity. One of the team, archeologist Raleigh Radford, began to find as the sources were culled that he was getting frequent refer ences to a war leader named Ar thur. He found that the Britons handed the Saxons a crushing defeat at a place called Badon Hill in 516 A.D. An eighth cen tury work, based on earlier ac counts, said the British leader was named Arthur. Arthur Prevents Raids Then, in Welsh laments, Rad ford found complaints that a leader named Arthur was pre venting their cattle raids. A Welsh poet. Aneurin. remarked of a certain chieftain that he was "no Arthur" but still man aged to kill a lot of people. But Arthur and his knights couldn't have tilted with lances, Radford says, because the saddle stirrup hadn't reached Britain from the steppes of Asia at that time. Radford said he hopes to find the place where Arthur , is buried. He has found records of the discovery of a grave at Glaston bury Abbey in 1191. In it were new two bodies, a man and a woman. On the breast of the man was a leaden cross which said: "Here lies King Arthur in the Island of Avalon." He said he thought he knew the exact spot and planned to excavate there, but he will not reveal it because of the danger amateurs might start digging themselves and ruin the project.
