May 23, 1955 MaiD Coffee (Prices Decline To Lowest in Past Five Years New York (U.R The price of coffee in retail stores dropped to its lowest price in five years to day. The latest price cuts brought some brands of coffee to as low as 75 cents a pound, a little more than half the price 10 months ago. Priee Wa Rumored The new low price of coffee was due largely to the resistance of American housewives to last year's high prices, along with bumper Latin American coffee crops and rumors of a price war among producers. The 75-cent price tag was an nounced by the A&P food stores, America's largest grocery chain, which will sell bagged coffee for from 75 to 81 cents a. pound and vacuum packed coffee for 85 cents, effective today. "The dip in prices will bring our coffee down to the lowest point in five years," an A&P spokesman said. Wholesalers and retailers be gan dropping prices last week, marking the third major coffee price decline this year. Total Drop 33 Cents Cuts in February rated up to 12 cents and cuts made March 1 were from 10 to 16 cents a pound. Today's cuts of up to five cents a pound make the total drop so far this year 33 cents a pound. The cuts caused concern among representatives of coffee For s 17' Phone 3-1733 Flowers Gifts 26 SOUTH CENTRAL Ashland Slates Vote On Schools Budget Ashland Polls will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. today for the Ashland city school budget elec tion, according to Leland P Linn, superintendent of schools The proposed budget calls for a total levy of $516,530, mclud ing $398,530 for operation of schools and $118,000 for bond interest and principal. The amount outside the 6 per cent limitation is $278,038. Main increase in the budget is for instruction. An additional teacher is being added at both the junior and senior high schools. Two teachers added this year at Bellview and Lincoln schools on a month to month basis will be employed perma nently next year. Bodies of Japanese ' Found in Wrecked Ship, Saigon, Indochina (U.R) The remains of 300 Japanese soldiers were found yesterday entombed in the wreck of the sunken naval vessel Shinsei Maru in the port of Saigon. The discovery was made by workmen raising wrecked ships as part of Japanese war repara tions to Viet Nam. growing countries. They have scheduled a meeting here for Thursday to attempt to establish a coffee stabilization pact. Vinnie Kyle Cook Dies; Funeral To Be Wenesday Funeral services for Mrs. Vin nie Kyle Cook, 76, of 38 North Oakdale ave., who died in a local hospital Saturday, will be held at Perl funeral home Wednes day at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Wil liam C. Piper of the First Chris tian church officiating. Entomb ment will be in Medford Mauso leum. Pall bearers will be Harry C. Skyrman, Frank E. Ross, B. L. Sanderson, W. H. Holt, John E. Myers and Robert E. Harnish. The deceased, a resident of southern Oregon for the past 50 years, was born in Fisher, 111., cn March 28, 1879, and came to Oregon 53 years ago. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. Survivors include two sons, Elmer E. Kyle and Robert Floyd Kyle, both of Medford; four grandchildren, Robert F. Kyle Jr., Medford; First Lt. Richard R. Kyle, with the Air Force in Japan; Elmer S. Kyle, Albany, Ore., and Jean Arden Kyle, Bend, and three grandchildren, Bruce Kyle, Theodore Kyle and Jenness Kyle, all of Medford. Anastasia Enters Surprise Guilty Plea "Camden, N. J. OJ.R) Rack eteer Albert Anastasia entered a surprise plea of guilty today to federal income tax evasion charges. Anastasia, reputed one time lord high executioner for Mur der Inc., filed his plea at the Camden District Court before Federal Judge Thomas M. Mad den. EARLY BIRDS Omaha, Neb. (U.R) Mrs. C. Hollensteelc, Omaha, told police that some energetic thieves had beaten Her to the punch. She said she had planned to move a two-car garage from a lot she owns. But when she got there, the lot was bare. The thieves had dismantled it, leaving not a single stick. '' RIOTERS GET THE SHORT END Police riot squad, using gas masks and billy clubs, battle with a truck load of stu dents who invaded the strikebound area where bus com pany pickets were rioting in Singapore. The students, 20 truckloads of them, ,came out second best as they were washed down with water jets by the waiting police, in jured in the fighting and arrested. Firemen Inspect 141 Residences in City City firemen inspected 141 residences Friday and found no hazards at 85. For 56 other homes visited a total of 83 recommendations were issued for correction of conditions commonly causing fires. The girls were on,Highway 97 when they were located, officers stated. The girls skipped school last Wednesday and did not return to their homes.
