(U.R) Dick Mayer of St. Petersburg, Fla., who got better as the pres sure mounted, more than doub led his yearly, golf earnings in four days as he took top money of S4.000 in the Kansas City open Sunday. The handsome blond swinger shot a five-under-par 67 Sunday for a 271 total, six strokes in front of Texas Billy Maxwell and veteran Chandler Harper of Portsmouth, Va., who tied at 277 and collected $1,950 apiece. Rosburg Fourth Mayer had rounds of 69, 67, 68 and 67 17 under par for 72 holes for his winning total. Bob Rosburg, young profes sional from San Francisco, was alone in fourth place with 278, good for $1,200 and a three-way tie for fifth knotted Henry Ran som, St. Andrews, 111., Eric Monti, Los Angeles, and Bud Holscher, San Francisco. All had 279 totals and got $1,000 each. Ransom was the first day leader with a 65. The pre-tourney favorites, Dr. Cary Middlecoff of Kiamesha Lake, N.Y., and Gene Littler of Palm Springs, Calif., tied with Douglas Higgins of Midland, Tex., for eighth place with 280 totals. Bout Hearing Resumed by Commission By RUSS GREEN Philadelphia (U.R) Roly poly Clarence (Skinny) David sen, trainer for boxer Harold Johnson, returned to the witness stand today as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission re sumed its investigation of John son's drug-induced blackout dur ing his bout with Julio Mederos two weeks ago. Davidson, a postal employee for 31 years and Jonnson's train er from the time of his first bout, was to be followed by Joe Row land and Lou Gross, seconds for Johnson during the bout; Tommy Loughrey, Johnson's manager of record, and Pete Moran, match maker for Herman Taylor who is charged by the commission with having a financial interest in Johnson. Hearing Completion Near The commission said it hoped to complete the hearing by Tues day afternoon, but gave no Indi cation of when any verdict could be reached. Rowland was on the stand when the hearing recessed last Thursday. He followed Johnson after the light-heavyweight con tender spent seven hours testify ing during the first three days of the investigation. - Testimony during the opening days came from two commission doctors who stated that medical tests showed there was a barbit urate in Johnson's system before his weird collapse between the second and third rounds of the nationally televised bout. Johnson said he did not take any drug willingly, nor had any one approached him and asked him to throw the fight. . But, he testified, "someone took it upon themselves to see that I didn't fight' my best." The Mysterious Orange Much of the testimony evolved about an orange given to John son by a "kind gentleman" after the noon weigh-in and carried about by the boxer until he ate it about 90 minutes before the fight. It was held the orange might have been the agent to put the drug in Johnson's system, but the fine timing to make his collapse come just at the-start of the fight is questioned. Johnson also said he saw ex convict Louis Saccaroma, of Mi ami, Fla., before the fight. Sac caroma is a co-manager with former middleweight champion Jake Lamotta of the Cuban Me deros. Davidson said he didn't see Saccaroma in the dressing room, and Saccaroma denied in Flori da tftat he was in Philadelphia the night of the fight. Virgil Akins Picked To Defeat Joe Miceli New York (U.R) Welter weight Virgil Akins of St. Louis is a slight favorate at 6Jz-5 to turn the tables on Joe Miceli of New York in their TV 10-round-er tonight at St. Nicholas arena. Miceli, whose best punch is the rare left uppercut, won a de cision over Virgil at Milwaukee on Sept. 30, 1952. Since then Akins improved much under the new manage ment of Eddie Yawitz, a St. Louis druggist.
