Several Thousand Oregon Youth Eye Work Possibilities Salem (U.R) Oregon employ ers soon will have available sev eral thousand young workers adequately tested for many lines of activity, according to the State Unemployment Service. Reports from employment of fices all over Oregon indicate nearly 16,000 persons will gradu ate from high schools in the next few weeks and a good propor tion of them will be looking for permanent jobs. With the aid of the general aptitude test battery, now in stalled in practically all 26 local offices of the employment ser vice, these graduates are discov ering a scientific basis for evalu ating their abilities. The service is conducted by the State Unem ployment Compensation Commis sion. "The test battery is nationally recognized and has proved high ly successful in picking the field of work in which a person is likely to be efficient," Earl R. Lovell, state employment di rector, said. "Over the past few years we have extended the use of this method until most of those entering the general labor market now are covered." 'Commie' Border Guards Fire on Berlin Taxicab Berlin (U.R) Communist border guards fired on a West Berlin taxi yesterday and East Germany further tightened its "baby blockade" on the western half of this divided city deep in Red torritory. Join the millions who always carry Defendant Occupies Evidence in Court Omaha (U.R) During a recent court trial of several men on assault and battery charges, numerous references were made by the prosecuting attorney to a chair one of the defendants al legedly threw at one of the plain tiffs during a scuffle. In summing up his case, the defense attorney demanded to know why the chair hadn't been introduced as evidence, since, it had such important bearing on the case. The prosecuting attorney then pointed to one of the defendants and remarked: "One of your clients has been sitting on the chair all through the trial. I didn't want to disturb him." Retirement from business by a man in his middle 50s is likely to shorten his life. So it is fre quently claimed. That doesn't go for men with hobbies that keep their minds active. Izaak Wal ton, London businessman, retired at 50. He enjoyed 40 years of leisure, not passing on until his 90th year. As you know, Wal ton's hobby was fishing. The first edition of his classic "The Compleat Angler" was publish ed when he was 60. He wrote a fifth edition when 83. A highway sign I always remember is one I saw at a very sharp turn on a New Eng land highway. It read: "Prepare to meet thy God." That sign nearly always slowed the speed ier motorists down ... In 1943 Soviet Russia issued a stamp that had on it a group picture of Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin. That should be a collector's item. Women between the ages of 30 and 39 who already have four or more children are most likely to nave twins. The chances are increased if married to a man of Irish birth or descent. Missing Persons One of the world's most effic ient missing persons bureaus is conducted by the Salvation Army at its headquarters in London, England. This bureau has connec tions everywhere in the world except behind the Iron Curtain. It has the remarkable record of finding 66 per cent of the miss ing persons it has received in quiries about. Another interest ing innovation at this hostelry is that every bathroom has a spe cial drying rack for nylons so feminine guests won't irritate their husbands by hanging their stockings on the shower bath curtain rack. Absence Discussing the question as to whether absence makes the heart grow fonder or that an "out of sight, out of mind" situation pre vails in most cases, La Rochefou cauld said, "absence abates a moderate passion and intensifies a great one as the wind blows out a candle but fans fire into a flame." (U.R) It's illegal for a hunter in Maryland to carry a loaded gun when he is "loaded." Gov. Theodore R. McKeldin recently signed into law a general assembly bill for bidding an intoxicated hunter from carrying a loaded firearm. Washington (U.R) The possl bility that the administration's handling of Salk polio vaccine could become a real and blazing political issue in next year's pres idential campaign is something politicians are just beginning to sense. There have been some rum blings in Congress topped off by the angry demand of Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore.) that Secretary Oveta Culp Hobby be removed from the cabinet. President Ei senhower was angry when he re jected Morse's idea in Wednes day's news conference. He told the reporters that Mrs. Hobby was an uncommonly capable woman with an outstanding rec ord of business, government and military administration. More To Come But the discussion will not end there. There was a hint of more to come in the carefully chosen and brief comment by Adlai E. Stevenson when he returned Wednesday to Chicago from his African tour. He was asked for comment on the administration's handling of the vaccine program. "I was astounded to hear that they (the administration) knew all about it and had no prepara tions for it," Stevenson replied and refused further comment. The implication of Stevenson's remark is a serious charge that the administration fumbled bad ly. But his criticism was indirect, implied, only. The brevity of Stevenson's CEMENT MIXER Conway, Ark. (U.R) Jack Chrisler, hurrying to go fishing, mistakingly sprinkled 10 quarts of cement on his onions, radishes, mustard and spinach. He said the vegetables are "several days' growth ahead" of another near by untreated plot. Use Mail Tribune Want Ads statement is sufficient evidence that the Democratic man of the year in 1952 and, perhaps 1956, is not yet sure in his own mind. He is not sure he could avoid a backfire if he made a firm polti cal issue of the handling of the Salk vaccine. The health of chil dren is an anxious thing. Ste venson is a more cautious man than Morse, by large measure. Parents' Ultimate Attitude What polticians of both par ties will want to see is the ulti mate attitude of parents toward a monumental effort, which so far has had its ups and downs, to'curb the disease which preys so particularly on little children. The election and the presidential (Vodka in orange juice) m It leaves you breathless m V 7 mlrtioff tCe qrtaitit name "VODKA 80proof . Made from 1 00 grain neutral spirits. Sic. Pierre Smirnoff Fls. The administration han dling of the program will be in good perspective by then, the ef fectiveness of the over-all effort will have been put to severe al though not complete test. The minds of mothers and ded will have arrived at whatever their conclusions are to be. It would not be fair to say that anyone, Democrat or not, would welcome the vaccine program as a political issue because it would not become such unless it devel oped serious faults. But, if the faults do develop and the par ents so find, the political issue of the Salk polio vaccine pro gram could be deadly to Mr. Eisenhower and his party. -fiSHs ITS TIME TO STORE YOUR FURS Your Winter Cloth Coats and Furs Receive Complete Protection While Vacationing in our CONCRETE COLD STORAGE VAULTS MINIMUM CHARGE 3 00 FUR SERVICE Repairing Cleaning Glazing Redying Relining At Low Summer" Rate RESTYLING Modernize your fur coat if out-dated by having it remade into any one of the many smart new 1955 fur fashions Capes Jacket or Cape Jacket to choose from All work done on the premises Stoles FOR MOST FURS $47 50 Ted Martin Sower's Furs 1943 Highway 99 So. - Phone GR 6-3649 Grants Pass, Oregon Do you know.
