I LIKE DENTISTS Though still infested by nine teenth century practitioners who adopt the huckster's slogan as a principle of hygiene, that is, "a clean tooth never decays," is the dental profession, in Ameri ca at any rate, commands my admiration today as it has ever since I began to study PERSON AL HEALTH. To many unteachable old-timers this may seem ironiq, The limit of their IQ is reached when they learn that I regard tooth brushing and anything fancier than plain toilet soap for mouth washing as mischievous for chil dren and silly for grown-ups. They tell their customers that Quack Brady must be a "filthy" fellow he never brushes his teeth! Neither the old-timers nor den tists of the present, if any still honestly believe brushing with or without trick dentifrices pre vents tooth decay, have though up an explanation of the fact that the people with the finest teeth in the civilized 'world have never had any use for tooth brushes or nostrums, such as Yankee nitwits with rotten teeth apply so faithfully instead of getting proper prophylactic treat ment by the dentist. The people with the finest teeth, the least tooth decay, are the inhabitants of Tistan da Cun- ha, one of the "Lonely Isles" in the south Atlantic. Perhaps I should say they had the finest teeth, up to '48 or '49, when a Capetown-London company es tablished a canning plant. That industrial development brought the first "store" where, for the first time, the island people could purchase refined grocer ies, candy, etc. quick calor ies minus the vitamins and min erals they formerly got in un refined foods. Bv now. I'm afraid Tristan da Cunha folk are be ginning to know what poor teeth we have in American and Eng land. But heck, I like dentists. I admire them for their skill and for their ethical probity. The dental profession commands my respect, even though some fat heads in the profession can't see what I'm driving at. I respect particularly the way 999 den tists adhere to ethical DrinciDles while only one breaks faith and advertises his wares as any cut price merchant does. dition of my mouth, I'm happy to tea you I have 28 teeth in a state of functional effeciency 52 per cent of 'em my own, 48 per cent contributions of my dentists. So I believe I owe to my dentists the fact that I'm pounding away at it here and not harping over yonder. I tell you, dentists and folks, when I say, in Little Lesson No. 1', "Save your Teeth," for which send 25c and stamped, self-addressed en velope,, that "For every tooth lost and not emmediately replaced by a func tionally satisfactory denture, ona j must deduct two years from, one's lift expectancy." I tell only what I believe to be the truth. Likewise when I say every sound or functionally efficient tooth is worth at least $100 only in desperate need would I sell one of' mine for $1,000 I'm trying to make you poor misguided people re alize " that your dentist s stock in trade includes good digestion, good health, vite, good looks and poison OAK?
