OUR RABID PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS Believe it or not, some doc tors and some hospitals still cau terize fresh wounds inflicted by animals or birds, or did indulge in such malpractice as recently as 1951 because, forsooth, of an understandable misapprehension that public health authorities prescribed it. , Some years ago any anima dversions upon mad dog scares infuriated a metropolitan health commissioner unbearably. He published an open letter in the press, desclaring that there is only one way to destroy rabies virus by cauterizing the wound inflicted by the animal or bird, particularly dogbite, with fum ing nitric acid. The health commissioner could not cite scientific evidence to support his assertion. But, by gum, the commissioner did his darnest to support malprac tice and at the same time put me under a cloud of suspicion in the minds of many wiseacres. The proper emergency treat ment of dogbite or any wound, inflicted by the teeth, claws, beak, talons or spurs of wild animal or bird, tame or wild, gentle or "mad," healthy or "rabid,", as any reputable phys lcian or surgeon will agree, whether he or she has the cour age to condemn cauterization or not is: 1. Wash out the wound with plain soap and sterile (boiled) water. 2. Rinse away the soap with sterile water. 3. Cut away dead tissue. 4. If the wound gapes, stitch it up. 5. Paint the surrounding skin with mild tincture or solution of iodine (2 per cent). 6. Apply a dressing of sterile (ironed) gauze (washed cheese cloth) spread with just suffic ient sterile (boiled) petrolatum or other sterile neutral salve or ointment to prevent the gauze sticking to the wound. That's all. But I'd go one step further, or at least I'd want the doctor to go at least one step further if I were the patient, and that is: 7. Administer tetanus ' anti toxin one dose immediately, a second injection 5 to 7 dayt later. AU programs at same time daily, unless otherwise Indicated) A.M. 5:30 Sign on. Coon-Neuberger Debate Due at Ontario Washington (U.R) Ren. Sam Coon (R-Ore.) said, yesterday he has accepted an invitation to de bate with Sen. Richard L. Neu berger (D-Ore.) a bill he intro duced which would allow private construction of the power abili ties of John Day Dam. The invitation was sent by the Ontario, Ore., Chamber of Com merce and the debate will be held there at a date to be set, Coon said. Neuberger. who wants the dam built entirely by the federal government, asked for the de bate two weeks ago . He sug gested it be held early next fall. Coon said the formal subject should be "agreed that the Coon bill for the John Day Dam is in the public interest," and that he would argue the affirmative. FAKIRS? If the wound were my child's or my own and the seven steps in emergency treatment were followed as described, I would not worry about it.
