TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, May 18, 1955 Paving Hearings Set by City Council; Project Bids Asked The Medford city council last night called public hearings June 7 regarding the paving of East Jackson st.. between Haw thorne and Genessee sts., and on a ganitary sewer on the north side of Stewart ave. west from Hamilton st. 251 feet. Ordinances were adopted call ing for bids June 17 on paving projects on East Jackson st. from Lindley st. to Berkeley way, Park ave. from Catherine st. to Stewart ave., and on Hamilton st. from 13th st. to 106 feet south of 11th st. Plans and specifications were adopted for a sanitary sewer on the north side of Stewart ave., and for paving between Haw thorne and Genessee sts. on East Jackson st. J Annexation Studied A recommendation that a por tion of Laurelhurst addition which is not now within the city be annexed was received from the planning commission, and the council authorized Duff to make a report on the proposal. The annexation would be hrought up at the same time as a proposed annexation in south Medford, because an election will be necessary. The council awarded a con tract to Crater Lake Motor com pany for a pickup truck for $1,299 on a trade-in, and award ed a contract to Courtesy Chev rolet for a dump truck for $2,934 on a trade-in. Howard T. Funk, 511 May st., was appointed to replace the late Joseph Jenson on Medford Fire department. Bidder Qualified The council qualified Peter Kiewit Son's company for a bid der on city public works, and an option on power line right of way for California Oregon Pow er company was extended to Sept. 1, 1955. An ordinance concerning qual ity of milk required by the state department of agriculture was adopted. The ordinance complies with department of agriculture standards for milk quality. A request from . the First Church of Christ Scientist for a sewer connection on . Oakwood drive was referred to the plan ning commission, and a request from A. H. Hiebert for an extra width driveway on Almond st. was delayed to the next council, meeting. Duff reported to the council that some options for right of way along Niantic st. for paving purposes have been obtained, but that several still are outstanding. Now is the time to CLEAN-UP . . . Take No Action The council took no action on a request from Benton Smith for city participation in paving the intersection at Columbus ave. and Mt. Pitt st. The council pointed out the responsibility was with property owners to fi nance paving intersections. Action was deferred on a re quest from Electrical Products for a lot in land dedicated for the extension of Kenneth st. be tween Court st. and Riverside ave. No action was taken on an ap plication from M. M. Huggins to sell Mobilgas aviation fuel at the municipal airport and to lease two tanks which were left by the Air Force. The tanks, the coun cil pointed out, do riot belong to Armed Forces Display Slated Here Sunday Maj. Gen. William T. Hefley, commanding general of Sacra mento air material area at. Mc Clelland Air Force base, Calif., will be principal speaker at Armed Forces day ceremonies at municipal airport Sunday after-, noon. The formal program will start at 1:40 p.m. Sunday with an in vocation by Dr. Raymond E. Bal comb of the First Methodist church, followed by assembly of flags at 1:45 p.m., with veterans organizations, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts participating. After The Star Spangled Ban ner by the Medford High school band, there will be 15 minutes of band music by the Medford group, and a 15-mlnute program by the Sixth Army Bagpipe band from San Francisco. To Introduce Guests CoL W. H. Bartlett, project chairman, and Mayor Earl Mil ler of Medford will introduce guests starting at 2:30 p.m. In addition General Hefley, guests on the speakers stand will be Maj. Gen. Roy V. Rickard, Maj. Gen. J. H. Hicks, and Cmdiv Rodney Keating of the naval re serve. The Rev. Willis Loar of East wood Baptist church will offer the benediction. Sewer Petition A petition for a sanitary sewer in the Highcroft addition was re ferred to the engineering depart ment, as were paving petitions for Oak st. between Second and Haven sts. John Snider, president qf the council, substituting for Mayor Earl Miller, reminded the coun cil of Armed Forces day cere monies at municipal airport Sun day and urged residents to at tend. The council granted John L. and Mildred D. Arzner at Com munity Grocery, 1101 East Jack son st., a license to sell wine, and granted Laura A. Saines at Wood land Heights Market, 1501 Prune st., a permit to sell beer. (Other concil stories on Page 1) nearby air force bases, military equipment from Ashland and Medford National Guard groups, as well as displays by the Red Cross, civil defense, the United States forest service, Civil Air patrol, veterans' organizations and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Tours through municipal air port control tower will be con ducted, and 28 armed forces movies and training films will be shown during the day in hangars at the airport. Seen on TV The 6th Army Kiltie band, from the Presidio in San Fran cisco, will come here fresh from a number of national television appearances. The Kiltie outfit is a part of the regular 6th Army band. They play bagpipes and drums and are decked out in full Highland er regalia. Many people in this area have seen their appearances on Arlene Francis' network tel evision show. A fly-over of the latest Air Force planes is set for 9:30 a.m. Trailer-on-Flatcar Service To Northwest Los Angeles (U.R) Santa Fe Railway today announced exten sion of its trailer on flatcar ser vice from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest via San Joaquin Valley beginning May 25. Oregon, Washington and South ern California will be linked by the new service operated with the Western Pacific Railroad and the Great Northern railway, Santa Fe traffic manager R. S. Hirsch said. Shippers and consignees will be furnished terminal to terminal transport by rail instead of high way trucks retained to transport material to and from depots, Hirsch said. Santa Fe also plans to extend the trailer on flatcar service from California to Arizona, New Mexico and El Paso, Tex. Congress Urged To Pass 10-Year Highway Plan Washington (U.R) The American Municipal Association urged Congress today to approve President Eisenhower's 10-year highway program rather tha,n the five-year Democratic substi tute recommended by the Sen ate Public Works Committee. The association represents mayors and policy makers of 12,- 000 cities and towns in 44 states. Mayor Allen C. Thompson, Jackson, Miss., association presi dent, outlined the group's views before a House Public Works Subcommittee. He appealed for a non-partisan approach to the highway problem. Ashland Councilmen Find Punctuation Mark. Ashland, Ore. (U.R) A mis placed punctuation mark in a 1948 copy of the Ashland city charter almost stalled the ma chinery of municipal ' govern ment until the council found out j where it belonged. j Because of a printing error, ' the council could not decide whether a tract of land was or was not a part of the city's Lithia I park. For-more than a month I councilmen wrestled with the j problem before checking the ori-! ginal ordinance to discover the error.
