On The Side (Distributed by King . 1 X 1 A 1 tytm STEVENS Spr Wood Railroad On land or water, travel in the Pacific Northwest was on wood in the old days. The fact stands out in a record left by John M. Murphy, Esq. of Dublin, a travel writer for a London publisher in the early 1870s. His journeys brought him tc Oregon, then up the Columbia by sternwheel steamboat sloutly made of ce dar and fir. He was heading for the Orofino mines. Landing at Wallula, Murphy could find no conveyance to Walla Walla but a plank flat , mr pulled by Dorsey Baker's dinky locomotive on Douglas fir rails topped by iron scraps. Wood vas its fuel. Because of the ftraps. Murphy was warned to ride aloft, else something from below might puncture him. The dinky had a squawling whistle, often sounded, striking Murphy's ears like the ycwl of an enraged tomcat. "Once in motion," wrote Mur phy, "it dashed on at a headlong speed of two miles an hour, and rocked like a canoe in a cross sea .... I saw why I was not permitted to stand on the floor of the truck, for a piece of hoop iron, which coverea the wooden rails in some places, curled up into what is called a snake-head and pushed through the floor with such force that it nearly stopped the train. . . Wild Walla Walla There, were seven hours of this, with smoke searing Mur phy's eyes and sparks setting his "silk hat and broadcloth coat on fire several times. It was desert country but the freight trail wound along by the railroad. "Immense prairie schooners, as the wooden wagons are called, drawn by teams of seven or eight pairs of mules or horses, or ten of oxen, wound in long serpentine lines over its bluish surface; and some of the drivers had the temerity to challenge the presi dent of the railway line to run a race with them in his old ma chine; but he scorned their hr sinuations, and kept walking quietly beside his train." Murphy was the talk of tha town in Walla Walla, with his plug hat a sieve from the holes burned in it and his fine coat equally well opened to the -atmosphere. He was made the butt of many a jest and the recipient of many a toast in Bourbon and Rye, Walla Walla being what it was in those days. The Wood Wagons The jurney of John M. Mur phy, Esq. followed the route of i. stage and freighting system ! from Wallula Gateway to north ern Washington and Idaho. It also had branches to Baker City, Ore., the settlements in the Grande Ronde Valley, and the gold camps of the Boise Basin. In the 1862-1882 period there were more ox teams than horses and mules, the oxen being more steady and reliable on the ter rible mountain roads. At the best, even with horses, a dozen miles with loaded wagons was a fair distance for a day's freight haul. The freighters, as Murphy de scribed them, were habitually red-shirted, with holstered re volvers and sheathed Bowie knives thonged to their belts, bullwhips coiled about their necks. They boasted such nick names as Blacksnake Baker and King Bolt Jack. They were com monly powerful tobacco chew ers, they "were' profane and ob scene in speech, yet were able and useful men. An unholy lot of the haul east was whiskey in wood barrels. Freighters proved that they were clever men, in the ways they devised to extract whiskey from a barrel and replace it with pure and wholesome spring water. Flour, clothing, tools and other supplies for mining and farming made up the main body of freight, of course. These were bedrock necessities of life and progress in the camps and settle ments. Man and beast and wagon got them through until the rail roads came. It was a life of labor that bred a saying "hell on wheels." And the wheels were wood. The West floated and roll ed on wood in the good old days of Travelin' John Murphy of Dublin. Refinery Produces 4 Ounces of Oil Weekly Elgin, 111. (U.R) A little re finery here modeled after those in the country's oil centers pro duces four ounces of the world's most expensive oil each week. The oil, valued at $7,650 a gal lon, is a joint product of research by the Mellon Institute in Pitts burgh, Pa., and the Elgin Na tional Watch Co. Two drops of the precious lu bricant are the eight-hour ration of watch workers who must use it, and they are enough to smooth the 18,700 jeweled bearings in 1,100 watches. The little refining unit, con tained in 10 square feet, has an annual output of four gallons. It's enough to lubricate all the watches manufactured in the United States each year, with enough left over to oil a few thousand alarm clocks. Research men rate the oil, of ficially termed LT 71, a giant step forward from the traditional timepiece oils such as neatsfoot and porpoise jaw. It required 16 years of intensive search. The oil was discovered while the laboratory me were trying to improve M-56b, another oil, and has shown marked resistance to cold. For this reason, it is expected to be of special value to military operations in the Arctic, since it flows efficiently at temperatures of 100 below zero or colder. Retired Man Raises Funds for Hospitals Memphis, Tenn. U.R) Retirement failed to stop Dr. Charles E. Diehl, 79, who started getting a hospital built after he qilit being a college president. Since he retired as president of Southwestern, Diehl has: 1. Raised funds for Japan Christian university. 2. Talked Tennessee into al locating about $1,000,000 for a state hospital for the feeble minded at Dickson, Tenn. 3. Helped with a program to rehabilitate ex-convicts. The American Institute of Cooperation will hold its 27th annual summer conference on farmer cooperative problems at Purdue University, Lafayette, Ind., Aug. 7-11. The color psychologists have recently been emphasing the fact that a color having great powers of male attraction is pink. Es pecially salmon pink.
