Comment On By HARMAN United Pratt Washington (U.R) What's new in Washington: On Derby week end, it was pretty hard to "J get hold of an ybody in Sen. A 1 b e n Barkley's of fice. The form er Veep had to miss the blue grass run on account of prior commit ments, but that didn't stop his Herman Nichols girl Saturday, Flo Bratten, from hopping a fly ing machine for Louisville. The Kentucky society gathered around the TV at the Willard hotel, watched the run for the roses and bought mint juleps at a dollar a clip which like as not were cheaper than the watered doses sold at Churchill Downs. The present vice- president, Richard M. Nixon, got an inter esting letter from a fan saying that he didn't think the country is "morally fit for war." The writer blamed the nudist maga zines he has been reading. As we have said before in this corner, the vice - president answers his mail. How he an swered that one, only he can tell and he wouldn't. There were 30,000 patrol kids, sponsored by the American Au tomobile association, in the capital over the week end. They were a happy, orderly crowd. But they caused Sen. Leverett Saltonstall, the Republican from Massachusetts,' a little trouble. He didn't mind so much the trombones not blending with the bugles and clarinets, in a rash of martial "music. But for 15 min utes the dignified gentleman from New England found his way blocked when he tried to wind his way through the swivel door into the Senate side of the capitol. Part of this was caused, not so much by the kid mob, but by stoppers who wanted auto graphs. One kid remarked: "I don't know who you are, sir, but sign." Rep. Jack B. Brooks, Democrat of Texas, can claim, no thanks to himself, something of a rec ord for brevity in the House de- LE6AL NOTICES CALL FOR BIDS Sealed bids will be accepted in the City Hall in Eagle Point. This and That W. NICHOLS Faatwe Writer bate. He arose during a fiery fight on the farm bill. The sus picion was that he had a mind to talk about peanuts, which was the order of the day. Whatever the subject, he had, by the clock, just two minutes and 20 seconds. Not much time for a Texan, but it turned to be more time than he actually got. Another Texan, Rep. W. R. Poage, walked to the mike just as our man Brooks was about to open his mouth. Poage, himself, it has to be noted, never is at a loss when it comes to talking about peanuts. Poage started out with "Isn't it a fact . . . and therefore wouldn't you say," etc. Brooks allowed as how it was a fact, whatever it was, and therefore he would say. The gavel fell and time was up, and there were two Texans stop ped for the nonce, at least. During the go-around, Poage several times had used the word "you." That prompted Rep. Claire Hoffman, the Michigan Republi can, who seldom needs prompt ing, to jump to his feet. Under House rules, Hoffman reminded the man from Texas, use of the word "you" is a violation of the rules. Poage agreed to amend his remarks and during the rest of the discussion, the Texan really cleaned his own plow. It was "you all" from there on.
