Underwater Nuclear Explosion
Scheduled in Pacific Ocean Soon
The University of Illinois op
ened in 1868 with 50 students.
In the 1954-55 school year it had
24,375 students.
Washington U.R) The gov
ernment has announced that a
"small yield nuclear device" will
be set off underwater in a few
days "in the eastern Pacific
Ocean several hundred miles
from the closest land area" off
the U. S. West Coast.
A joint announcement by the
Defense Department and Atomic
Energy Commission said the pur
pose of the underwater explo
sion is to gain data ' essential
for developing tactics for de
fense against submarine attack."
Clear of Fishing Gzounds
The announcement said that
the test area, which was not
pinpointed, is "completely clear
of fishing grounds and shipping
lanes.!'
either mainland or ' island in
habitants, the fishing industry
or fish consumers, it was said.
The announcement said that
the Scripps Institute of Ocean
ography made studies of the
area for the government and will
participate in the. test. Based
on the Scripps findings, it was
concluded "that the area is free
of food fish."
Second Underwater Test
It will be only the second U.S.
atomic device to be set off under
water. The first underwater shot
was part of the 1946 "operation
crossroads" at Bikini atoll in
the Pacific. In this test, the bomb
was set off in comparatively
shallow water of Bikini lagoon.
Plans for a deep underwater ex
plosion at Bikini in 1946 were
cancelled.
It will also be the first post
war atomic test which this coun
try has ever conducted outside
of its established proving
grounds the Bikini - Enitwetok
area of the mid-Pacific, and the
Frenchman Flat area in the
Nevada desert.
No Indication of Size
The experiment will be car
ried out by a part of Rear Adm.
C. B. Momsen's joint task force
seven which handles nuclear
weapons tests in the western
Pacific proving grounds.
The announcement gave no in
dication of the size of the nu
clear device other than to call
it small. Such devices have been
tested at the Nevada proving
grounds with yields of as little

Salem U.R) Two Portland
Telephone employees were pre
sented Bell System Vail medals

boys in separate acts of heroism
last June.

dolph from electrocution on an
accidentally charged irrigation

New Trial Plea
For Wife Slaying
Cleveland, O. (U.R) Common
Pleas Judge Edward Blythin has
thrown out Dr. Samuel H. Shep
pard's pleas for a new trial be
cause the claim of new evidence
was "still in the realm of
theory."
The 31-year-old osteopath, in
his second bid for a new trial
since he was convicted of his
wife's murder, had argued that;
evidence discovered since his
conviction showed someone else
committed the crime. The state,
arguing against the appeal, said
the defense case was "opinions,
speculations and conjectures."
Judge Blythin's 16-page re
fusal to grant the new trial said
defense attorneys had failed to
show that evidence submitted
for his study was not available
at the time the trial started last
fall. Further, Judge Blythin said,
some of it had been entered dur
ing the trial proceedings, but
had been rejected by the jury
in reaching its decision.

iff Wilbur T. Hildreth, tired of
having habitual drunks use the
county jail as a rest home, today
ordered a new diet for his
"guests." Hildreth said maybe

black coffee, bread and "possi
bly beans."
