(U.PJ-Only Ted Williams knew today whether he would rejoin the hit-starved Bos ton Red Sox. . ; But as usual Ted was no where to be found. Gets Divorce : He came out of his self-imposed solitude at a fishing camp in the Florida Keys Monday and obtained a divorce from his wife, Doris. Since General Manager Joe Cronin of the Red Sox had stated previously that Teds per sonal problems were the only reason he hadn't reported to the team many weeks ago, it was ex pected that he would be rejoin ing the club shortly. The Red Sox grew even more hopeful when they learned that Williams tried to get a seat on a plane from Miami to Newark, N.J.. the first available plane north Monday night. Since he had no reservation he was asked to "stand by" and there would have been room for him. But when the plane took off at 7:30 p.m. EDT Monday night Wil liams was nowhere to be found. All Williams said was that "I have no immediate plans." Williams was cordial both to his estranged wife and to her at torney, William Ward, and when the divorce proceedings were completed he walked over and said "I want to thank you for being big league all the way." In her brief testimony, Mrs. - Williams stated simply that "We just didn't get along" and "I don't think Ted ever wanted to be married." At the request of Williams' of the terms of the financial set tlement would bemade public. HUSKIES DIVIDE PAIR Seattle U.P.) Economic Beef Production Seen As Important Move Corvallis (U.R) Economic beef production may be more important to future profits of cattlemen in the Northwest than higher market prices. Alan Rogers, Ellensburg, Wash., chairman of the Ameri can National Cattlemen's Asso ciation research committee, brought out this point in an ad dress before the 42nd annual convention of the Oregon Cattle men's Association today. "The present day cattle induT try has a long way to go in mas tering feeding and breeding ef ficiency," Rogers said. He said cattlemen use from six to nine pounds of feed to produce a pound of. beef, while a pound of frying chicken meat can be pro duced from 2.5 to three pounds of feed, and a pound of pork from 3.5 to four pounds of feed. Rogers said the ANCA hoped to stimulate research efforts of state and federal agencies on the more pressing breeding and nu trition problems in the industry. The three-day conclave was in its second day today.' Robert A.
