World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Marciano took another day off from boxing today because man ager Al Weill was afraid the Brockton Bomber was "getting too fine." The champion said he would continue his daily stint of 10 miles of roadwork, but the extra holiday would give him added strength for next Monday's title bout against British Champion Don Cockell. Too Fins Now "I don't want to take any chances," Weill said. "He's too fine now and I feel that an extra day's rest will keep him from becoming stale." Meanwhile at San Rafael, Eugene Tops Spokane in Home Opener By UNITED PRESS ' The Eugene Emeralds finally opened their home campaign in Northwest league baseball play last night and treated the home fans to a 12-1 drubbing of the Spokane Indians. George Storti, Eugene right 'hander, doled out but two hits in going the distance while the Emeralds collected 10 bingles off two Spokane hurlers. Nap Gully provided Spokane's only damag ing blow with a homer in the second with nobody aboard. Gladstone Homers Meanwhile, Eugene had wrapped it up in the first inning with five runs with the aid of a two-run homer by Granny Glad stone. Ted Hesse, Eugene left fielder, contributed three hits in three trips to pace the Emeralds' attack. x Tri-City rattled 15 hits off three Yakima pitchers for a 12-2 victory over the Bears. Tri-City's big inning was the third when seven runs trickled across on six hits and three Yakima errors Tom Perez of the Braves hom ered with one man aboard dur ing the frame. . . , ' Joe Riney's three - run Tiomer in the third inning paced Lewis ton to a 5-2 verdict over Salem. Dick Derganc gave up 11 hits but managed to stick around for th3 victory. Eiayes, Iba On UO Clinic University of Oregon, Eugene W. W. (Woody) Hayes and Henry P. (Hank) Iba will be two of four guest mentors taking part in the University of Ore ' eon's coaching clinic June 13 to 18. Hayes is head coach at Ohio State college and Iba is head basketball tutor at Oklahoma A and M. Two other "visiting" coaches will be on the staff, Al Negratti and Lee Gustafson. Negratti, who has been basketball coach at Cleveland high, Portland, moves to Portland university's head cage post. Gustafson coached South Salem high to the state football co-championship last fall. Oregon tutors on the clinic staff will be Bill Bowerman, track coach; Don Kirsh, baseball mentor, and. Bill Hammer, wrestling tutor. Frank Strazzullo NW Bat Leader Wenatchee, Wash. (U.R) Frank Strazzullo of Tri-City led Northwest League hitters in three departments and was tied for leadership in a fourth ac cording to league statistics re leased yesterday. Strazzullo's .478 average top ped the loop's hitters as did his total base output of 20 and his mark of 11 runs scored. He was tied with Hillis Layne, Lewiston, in doubles. Each ha four. Jim Moore, Wenatchee, had the most hits, 13; Don Pries of Tri-City led in triples with 2; Joe Jacobs of Lewiston and Don Lundgren , of Wenatchee were tied in stolen baser with 3 each. Lloyd Jenney, Wenatchee catcher, showed well in the pow er department, leading in homers with 2 and deadlocked with teammate Lundgren for the RBI's lead with 10 apiece. Ralph Bums. Tri-City; Ralph Buckingham. Wenatchee, and John Marshall of Wenatchee each had won two games to tap the pitchers. Prospect Lions Set Country Store Shoot Prospect The Prospect Lions club will hold a "country store" shoot Sunday, May. 15, starting at 10 a.m., it was announced to day. The shoot will include rifle matches, shotgun matches, a trap shoot, and competition with hunting rifles, small bore rifles and target rifles. Prizes will include hams, ba con and grocery - orders.' Food will be served at a booth oper ated by Prospect Lady Lions. Cockell's manager seemed recon ciled to the fact that his request for an English judge would be refused. However, the manager, John Simpson, said he would like to meet with boxing commission members to ask questions about "How many fouls Rocky will be allowed" before he is disquali fied, interpretation of roughness and fouls, and hitting after the break. "In a few of the pictures I saw, he, Marciano used foul tac tics," Simpson claimed. "I don't want them used against Cockell." Seattle, Wash. (U.R) Harry (Kid) Matthews who fought both heavyweight king Rocky Mar ciano and challenger Don Cock ell predicted today that the champion would retain his crown by a knockout before the end of the fifth round. Mathews, who lost to Cockell three times and was knocked cold by Marciano in their only go, said he had to "give the nod to Rocky." Fight Set for Monday Marciano and Cockell meet in San Francisco next Monday night with the title at stake. "It's going to be a bruising fight, but it isn't going to last the 15 rounds," said Mathews. "Those fellows punch too hard for a fight between themto go the distance. I think you'd be stretching it to-say it would go more than five rounds." Matthews, now retired from the ring and operating a fuel oil business here, said Cockell hits as hard as Marciano but he doesn't throw as many combina tion puches as the champion does. "Marciano keeps belting away and because of that I have to go along with him," said Matthews. Talent Tips Eagles, 8-3 Eagle Point A homer by Ray Weinholt with two on in the first inning started Talent High school to an 8-3 victory over Eagle Point here yesterday. The homer was one of four hits Eagle Point pitcher Bill Caldwell allowed in coins the distance. Caldwell struck cut five and walked nine while get ting two of the five hits Eagle Point batters collected off two Talent hurlers. Coghill started for Talent, fanning eight and walking two in the four innings he pitched. He was relieved by Walters, who fanned .two and issued three bases on balls. Six Eagle Point errors helned Talent score three runs in the second and two in the sixth frame. Friday. Eagle Point will nlav at Talent High school. Yesterday St. Mary's broke a 1 to 1 deadlock with four runs in the third inning. During the stanza the Crusaders applied five hits and four Jacksonville miscues to advantage. Tim Du- gan, Dick, Paup, Gerald Darland, Laval Meunier and John Walsh got the safeties. Dugan and Darland each hit three times in three batting turns. (U.R) The Huron Bowl Quintet of Pontiac, Mich., tried hard to land among team leaders in the American Bowling Congress tourney last night, but fell short about 100 pins as they scored a 2,913 count, highlighted by a 1,004 middle game. The team, paced by Joe Bon figlio's 603, opened with a 924 and wound up with a 985. A score of 3,012 or better is re quired to crash the top ten in the standings. On the first shift last night, Lyndhurst Recreation of Lynd- hurst, N. J., hit 2,818 to lead all teams. John Jaget led his team with a 633. Earlier, Ralph Penvose and Harry Price of Huntington, W.
