Med Treasure Long Canes for Ladies Once Stylish in France "If this was a cane for a worn V an, she must have been an amazon," I said. "Not at all " replied the pro prietor of the shop. "This was made in the time of Marie An toinette, when it was fashionable lor ladies to carry long canes. Who knows, maybe she herself , touched this." "Look at this," he said, seizing the stick, which was just a little under four feet long. He gave the head of it a twist and re moved it. He thrust the butt of the cane forward. "See! She carried her powder here. You can even mell it now. Right from the time of Marie Antoinette." Well, that was no test for me. Tor all my nose could tell it might have been Max Factor's latest. I did like the stick though, and while I didn't go for the Marie Antoinette connection, or ny part of it, the piece was evidently an expensive one with out any spur - of - the - moment valuing by the proprietor. For example, the removable STATES PRINTED MANY TYPES OF COINS IN PRE-U.S. MINT DAYS If you come across what looks like Roman coin but with the date 1787 in Arabic numerals, don't be greatly' surprised. It is probably one of many thousands struck off in New York during the six-year period from the treaty of peace with Great Britain to the adoption of the Constitution in 1789. In those Tears,, the various states went hog wild in experiments with coinage, and none more so than New York. There, without an of ficial state mint, coiners man aged to turn out at least 15 dif ferent types of cents alone. . The Roman type mentioned above is far from rare, but for that very reason it is one that anyone might find." Further more, from the point of view of returns, some of them are' well worth coming across. All of them have the Latin words ''Nova Eborac" on the ob verse side, around the wreathed head of what appears to be a Roman general looking off to the right. HOW TO RECOGNIZE CIVIL WAR BLOCKADE RUNNER ITEM An envelope that carried a litter via blockade runner to the Confederate States ought to be a highly valuable philatelic item, er so one would think. The way the Northern navy bottled up the Confederate ports steadily reduced finally to zero all types of rebel overseas commerce. And the type to suf fer fastest was that of non-government mail. Actually, though, letters that were sneaked through the Fed eral blockade are not so very valuable. It would be rare to find one worth over $500, and most of them are worth a lot less. None of them, however, would be of such little value that it wouldn't be worth getting if you knew the items and their prices. . Here is how to recognize them. They are almost certain to be postmarked either Wilmington, N. C , or Charleston, S. C. Those , two cities were the most favored by the blockade runners for the sound reason that they were nearest to the neutral ports of Nassau, N. P., Hamilton, Ber muda, or Havana. If an envelope you find is stamped either with the word STEAM-SHIP in an oval, or just 16-PERSONAL Z WILL not be responsible for debts . other than my own as of May 3, '53. Glenn A. Hanscom. As for the joint ure, that was impossible' to de tect, thanks to a broad and beau tifully carved band of heavy gold. Interested in the piece, I of fered $10 in francs, quite pre pared to let myself be pushed up to $20. But I had misjudged the pro prietor. Something in my man ner had deeply offended him, and he bluntly refused to sell for a cent less than what amounted to $100. I laughed and left. But re cently, two years later, I had occasion to recall the incident. I saw the cane, the identical one, in an interior decorator shop which offered it for sale at $250. There was no question as to its being the same one, for the decorator told me had bought it in the very shop I had visited in Paris, and for only $30. On the reverse side appears the abbreviation VIRT. ET. LIB., abbreviated Latin for virtue and liberty. Those words surround the seated figure of Liberty who generally, on this coin, faces to the left. One of her hands holds an olive branch. The other clutches a pole surmounted with a Liberty cap while the state shield leans against her flank. If the head of the general and the figure of Liberty are small you can tell that is the case if both the general's head and the Liberty figure are beneath the lettering instead of in line with it then you have a fairly valu able piece, generally worth around $200. On the other hand, if you come across a coin on which the gen eral's head extends into the line of lettering, and if the Lib erty on the other side is very erect, it is still a fair find, such types being worth from $15 to $35. the word SHIP, and there is also the number "12," "22,"- "32" or a higher number increased in that progression, and written near it in ink, you can be prac tically certain of having a block ade runner item. Be highly suspicious if there is an European or other foreign stamp on the envelope. Such mail didn't carry evidence like that of its country of origin. The number in ink stands for the amount of postage due. The lowest letter rate for a . letter sent to the Confederacy from London, say, 'was 12 cents. Of that sum, two went to the block ade runner's captain and the bal ance for the regular postage paid on all'mail in the Confederacy. Most letters with the word SHIP instead of the oval enclos ing STEAM-SHIP have a Wil mington postmark. Occasionally, however, one is found with the Charleston postmark and that one will inevitably carry a high er value. What you can expect to get for such a find, assuming good condition, is not too bad. Scott's catalogue lists them at $100, a figure that seems somewhat low. How about tight corsets? Why do I want to know? Well, sir, I am just trying to find out if we are going to have a period of peace and prosperity. James Lever, world famous expert on the history of dress, says peace and prosperity has reigned dur ing practically all periods when women wore tight corsets and long dresses and featured long hair. That in periods when short dresses, short hair and plunging necklines were popular, the countries where those styles prevailed suffered from unrest, inflation and a variety of addi tional troubles. Ladies Day An amusement park In New York once had a day on which all red-haired people were ad mitted free. There is the germ of a great idea there for a base ball park or some other place where sports events are fea tured. Have a "red-haired ladies day." Think of the number of men who would pay their way in just to look over the assem blage of gorgeous redheads. Passing By Gilda Gray. The very daring danseuse. Divorce As a student of horses and women I have found some of the grounds for divorce voiced by women quite interesting. For example, a California woman, the mother of seventeen chil dren, gave as the principal rea son for seeking a divorce that her husband wanted more children. Doctors Note it said that physicians seldom live to be over 80. Might be true. Yet I know of one cele brated physician who did.
