FOUR MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday May 9. 1S5S Wedding Service Lasts Three Days In Indian Cities Washington U.P.) Modern brides who wail that "too much fuss" is made by their mothers at weddings might compare themselves -with their Indian sisters. "In India the usual city wed ding lasts there days," said Mrs. Veena Vashi, an Indian woman who is studying architecture and social economic planning herp. "The bride robed in a whie sari, has small part in festivi ties," said Mrs. Vashi. This is the opposite of her American counterpart who is the main at traction. The first evening of the wed ding ceremony, the bride usually sits in one room, head modestly lowered. Female relatives and friends sit around her. w "The groom arrives resplend ent in robes. He is garlanded with flowers and is on a horse. Proceeding the groom are male relatives and friends. And lead ing the procession is a brass band, to announce the arrival," he continued. : The bridegroom is seated in another room. Males and females are separated. : The bridal couple must wait for an auspicious moment for the actual wedding ceremony. This "moment" is decided upon by comparing the astrologies of the couple. The stars decide at exactly what second they will be wed. This "auspicious mo ment" might fall at 4 a.m., or some other unhandy hour, j The ceremony itself, is simple and beautiful. It takes about 10 minutes for a Brahman (Hindu) priest to unite the couple. After the ceremony, a feast is Bethel to Mark Anniversary; Members Visit At a meeting of Central Point bethel of Jobs' Daughters planned for May 12, members of the Order of Eastern Star will be honored guests, and the bethel will celebrate its seventh birth day. On the refreshment committee were the Misses Sally Elden, Jo anne Ritter, Anita Conger, and Mesdames Elden, Ritteoand Con ger. ... A large group of Central Point bethel members visited Bethel No. 14 in Medford May 4 on Friendship night and entertained with a prize -winning drill, "Wormando's Hideaway." ready for the guests. "The father who earns $60 a month would spend about $500. While the one who earns $500 a month would . spend about $2,000," she said. The second day the bride is taken to the groom's home. On, the third day, the groom returns the bride to her parents' home. He is welcomed as a new son. "Of course," Mrs. Vashi con cluded," in the villages the wed ding ceremonies last seven days."
