(U.R) Chandler Harper, who builds golf courses and golf clubs as part of his 21-year career as a touring tournament golfer, usually is re garded as a "pitch and putt" man in tourney play. His last two tournament tri umphs 14 months apart were in the 1954 Texas Open and the Virginia Beach Open two weeks ago. Both were over' short . courses , where the premium was on short iron and putter profic iency. But, today as the rich $25,000 Colonial National Invitation golf tournament moved into its sec ond round over the long, tor turous 7,035-yard Colonial Coun try Club course, the man in front of the pack by a stroke was Harper. Cards 69 The drawling Virginian, Who divides his time between a golf course he is building in Ports mouth, Va., and a club manufac turing concern in Chattanooga, Term., was the only man in the 47-player field to conquer Colo nial's sun-seared layout Thurs day as he posted a 35-34 69 de spite an erratic game off the tee. That gave him a slim one stroke edge over defending champion Johnny Palmer of Charlotte, N.C., and Jack Fleck of Davenport, Iowa, who shot identical 36-34 70s. And, Jie was two strokes ahead of a trio made up of Tom my Bolt of Houston, Tex., Ed Oliver of Lemont, 111., and Leo - Biagetti of Sandusky, Ohio, who were bracketed at 71. Arch Moore Will Battle Bobo Olson New York (U.R) It's only seven weeks to June 22, the day lightheavyweight champion Archie Moore puts his crown on the line against middleweight King Carl (Bobo) Olson, but the old battler claimed today he won't have much trouble losing 21Vi pounds by then. Moore, who scaled a beefy 196V4 pounds for his bout with Cuban heavyweight Nino Valdes in Las Vegas, Nev., Monday night, agreed to meet Olson Thursday, but only after the In ternational Boxing Club prom ised him a heavyweight title bout in September. Terms for the Moore-Olson bout have not been completed, but they will meet at the Polo Grounds with Olson's title not at stake. If, however. Olson defeats 'the 38-year-old "wonder man" of the ring, he'll have to relinquish his middleweight title. Hardtop Races v Set for Sunday Ashland The management of the Ashland Speedway has an nounced that races 'have been scheduled for this Sunday. For the past few weeks races have been canceled at the last minute due to the possibility of poor weather conditions. Sundays races should have their share of the thrills and spills that go along with the popular sport of hardtopping. Since the opening race in April interest has grown, and several new cars have been built up, both in Medford and Ashland. Some of these cars and drivers will be appearing on the track for the first time. Crock Hunter, pilot of Cros by's A-15, will be in the sights of many drivers. Hunter walked away with main event honors in the opening race, and since then has , been challenged for that honor. A full car program has been promised for Sunday's races with cars coming from Grants Pass and Medford. MACIAS TO MEET KEEN AN Los Angeles (U.R) Raton Raul Macias of Mexico, who won the National Boxing Association bantamweight title by deafting Thailand's Chamren Songkitrat last March, has signed to meet British Empire champion, Peter Keenan of Scotland in a title bout here, June 8. CARDS SIGN SCAFFIDI Chicago (U.R) Frank Scaf f idi, a tackle from Marquette who was the Chicago Cardinals 10th draft choice, has sign- a 1915 National Football league contract with the club. Scaffidi, a 250-poundee. ilso fills in as a place-kickar. - a no-time-limit mixed tag affair. Two referees will be used, Promoter Mack Lillard said. Other matches will send Logger Porter against Cyclone Cobb and Buck Davidson will test newcomer Cowboy Wes Knap. Starting time is 8:30 p.m. and doors open an hour earlier. . Saturday They can do it by taking both games of the afternoon twinbill from the . Klamath Pelicans. Medford and GP are now knot ted with five wins in six games each. The Cavemen were to fin ish this week with a single game against Ashland today. . However, the assignment against the Pels won't be an easy one for Medford. Rivalry in the circuit is on an even plane this season and the Pel-Tornado se ries is considered a toss-up de spite an earlier 6 to 4 win by the Rogue valley squad over KF. PUchers Listed Ed McCullough and Duane Sides are probable starting throwers for Medford with Ernie Tyler and Larry Clark on hand for relief. Dave D'Olivo and Earl Tichenor may be the Klam ath tossers. Medford has been strengthened by the return of Third Baseman Larry Gober, who has been sidelined by a bout with flu and a kidney ailment. Prestige only will be at stake in the dual engagements of oth er Tornado athletes. In track and field Medford will be heavily favored over Klamath, which has not shown great strength this year. More than thirty trackmen are expect ed to make the jaunt over the mountain for the Tornado. One of the top Medford thinclads won't perform. Coach Bob New land said last night. Pole Vault er Lew Breazeale turned his ankle while high jumping Wed nesday. He is expected to be okeh by district meet time next week. A couple of recent additions to the cinder varsity are Mike Smith, broad jumper, and Bob Tarns, high jumper and broad jumper. Both are juniors. In tennis Medford edged Klam ath 4 to 3 this week. ' Marshfield will provide the third team tussle of the season for the Tornado golfers who have two victories over KF be hind them. Time To WING! o FORAGE HARVESTERS llubbard-VJray Co., Inc. 25 South Riverside Medford By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer Dale Long, victim of one of baseball's most bizarre experi ments, was in another rare posi tion today: He could say "I told you so" to General Manager Branch Rickey of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Four years ago, Rickey de cided Long couldn't make the big league grade as a first base man and announced he was con verting him in to a left handed catcher. The move defied tradi tion because baseball men in sisted there just "couldn't be such an animal." Long agreed but went along with the experi ment. It failed but Long still thought he could make good as a first sacker and today he's proving his point with a .364 batting average that's a major factor in the Pirates' sudden emergence as respectible citizens in the Na tional League. The 29-year-old 210-pounder from Green Bay, Wis., capped the comeback Thursday when he drove in six runs with three doubles and a sacrifice fly and started a triple play as the Pi rates beat the Milwaukee Braves, 9-4. The victory was the fifth straight for the Pirates second longest of the Rickey re gimeand their eighth in 11 games.' They'll equal the Rickey regime record of six wins in a row if they beat the New York Giants tonight. Long, who has three triples and five doubles among his 16 blows this season, started his great day Thursday by driving in the first Pittsburgh run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. In the fifth, he doubled to drive in two more runs and in the sixth he lashed another double with the bases filled to drive in three more. Triple Play Then, in the seventh, his 6 feet, 4Vi inches were put to good use when he leaped to spear a line drive by Eddie Mathews arid start the season's first triple play. Long threw to Dick Groat, covering second, for a second out and took the shortstop's throw to first to complete the triple killing. Nelson King re ceived credit for his first win with the aid of Vernon Law's relief. i The Giants downed the Chi cago Cubs, 6-3, and the Detroit Tigers defeaed the Boston Red Sox, -2, in the only other games.
