Eagle Poinl High School Class Tours Fourteen members of the Eagle Point High school secre tarial class visited The Mail Tribune yesterday. Leading the group was Stewart Hopper, class instructor. Tht visit was one in a series being conducted by the class ovr a three-months period, dur ing which they are visiting var ious types of business places throughout the Medford area. Class members taking part in the program are Myrtle Flow ers, Hazel Millard, Janet Stuart, Sandra Gerbing, Pat - Hawks, Carla Ragsdale, Amy Sue John ston, Kay McCorkle, Muriel Burgess, Ruth Westover, Claud ia Ash, Alice Wilson, Marcie Woodward and Pinky Greb. They were shown through The Mail Tribune offices and plant by Business Manager Gerald Latham. Others the class has visited include stores, radio sta tion!, fruit packing firms, lum ber mills, banks, attorneys' of fices, a business school, the court house. Camp White Veterans Ad ministration domiciliary center, and utility companies. Main Phone 26766 Martin Heitkamp Jr., 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Heit kamp. 2929 South Pacific high way, Medford. was named Jack son county 4-H club "member of the month" for April 5. 4-H. leaders recently. Martin is completing his it?hth vear of 4-H club work in the Antelope club. He is the vice I president of the Antelope Com munity club and has served as president, secretary, treasurer and reporter of several project clubs in the Antelope district. His major interest has been beef, with projects also in dairy, tractor maintenance and a new fishing cjub that was established this year. Martin owns six head of heref ord . females, one of which is registered, and one heref ord steer which he is fat tening for the 1955 county fair. The family farm consists of 230 acres which is devoted to pas ture, hay and grains to be used by the 70 head of dairy cows and the 1500 chickens which the Heitkamps are raising. In 1954 Martin was one of the top three judges at the county fair and represented Jackson county on the judging team at the state fair. His aged hereford female was grand champion at the 1954 county fair and over the past years he has received many firsts and seconds with his hereford cattle. In 1952 his here ford steer was light heavy first place winner. Showmanship has found Martin consistently stand ing near the top of the class be cause of his ability to fit and show his animals. A senior at Phoenix High school, Martin is taking a college preparatory course and plans to attend Oregon State college to study in agriculture next fall. Scholastically he stands in the MARTIN HEITKAMP JR. Named 4-H'sr of Month upper third of his class and in school has taken patricular inter est in the International Relations league. . Hobbies, Activities Woodcraft has been one of his special hobbies and activities at school, making many items for the home, including bowls, cof fee tables, gun cabinets and other useful items. Fishing and hunting are two of his special hobbies, and with Bear creek flowing through the back part of their property, Mr. Heitkamp says the young fisherman is quite often wading the .creek. Gold still flows in Bear creeks As an amateur gold panner, Martin has several nice flakes to show for his efforts. After graduation this spring, Martin will work in the home farm, irrigating and putting up hay for the dairy herd. The fam- SPORTS Rainier Sell Widmar To Texas League Team Seattle UR) The Seattle Rainiers have sold Al Widmar, pitcher, to Tulsa of the Texas League, where he will serve as a pitcher-coach, the Seattle man agement said today. The sale of Widmar, 30. coup led with the sale earlier this week of Moe Savransky, left handed pitcher, to Charleston, W. Va., brought the Seattle ros ter down to the prescribed 21 man limit. EX-UMPIRE DIES Drexel Hill, Pa. (U.R) Frederick E. Westervelt, who served briefly as a major league umpire more than 40 years ago, died at his home Wednesday after a long illness. Westervelt, who also was an umpire in the minors, served in the National league in 1911 and the American in 1913. : Portland (U.R) A field of 30 nominees has been received for the opening handicap Satur day of the 41-day racing season at Portland Meadows here. En trants are expected from Oregon, Washington, California, and Arizona for the Inaugural Hand icap. Roland Hardy of Britain set the old mark of 35 minutes, 15 sec onds on May 31, 1952. BOWLING COMMERCIAL LEAGUE Final week's bowling only changed a minor position or so in Commercial League standings. Top place went 'to the C&C Log gers, made up of four Cabler boys and Charlie Tennant. Alexander and Brown Insur ance still was in second spot, but tied by the Darling Real Estate team. Only other team among the top set that showed any life was Crater Lake Motors, which had trouble getting a split with 11th place First National. , High series scratch went to the Loggers with their 2659, but high with handicap went to Do mestic Laundry with 2684. Jim Cabler high individual series with 597. Championship play-off will take place Wednesday, May 11, at 7 p.m. This will place the Table Rock Lumbermen against the C&C Loggers. Point money and all individual prizes for the season will be announced at that time. A handicap pot game will be rolled by those wishing to take part at the same time the play-offs are rolled.
