The strange laws of street gangs are described in the following dispatch, based oil talks with three members who came into court to see the excitement after a rival gang member was arrested for murder. By ELIZABETH TOOMEY United Press Correspondent New York (U.R) Three boys tat on a bench in the back of the dingy court waiting room and talked in excited whispers. They were neatly dressed, ac cording to the curious fashion that marks members of teenage street gangs. Their zippered jackets were handsome two-tone gabardir e, their shoes were pol ished and their hair was long, well-oiled and piled as high as possible above their foreheads. They were hoping for a glimpse of a rival gang member. Frank (Tarzan) Santana, 17, a member of the Navajo gang, was to be arraigned in the ad Joining room and charged with the murder of William Blank enship Jr., 15, who was shot on; his way home from a movie Saturday night. Bitter Gang Rivalry Bitter rivalry usually exists between gangs. But in the ex "citement of a really bigtime "raid." all gang members were temporary allies. "We got our rules, the self appointed warriors' spokesman said. It's a stick ball club, sure, but if anybody touches us or, say, we play for money and somebody doesn't pay up . . we get the two fellows together who got the complaint and they fight it out. But maybe some body else jumps in, and then everybody starts." The age of most gang mem bers ranges from 14 to 19. Most of them are under 18 and should be in high school. "We don't go, though," the 16-year-old warrior said. His two friends snickered. "Most of us just quit, but some of the fel lows are supposed to be in school. They never go. We call it hookey holiday." Initiations Involve Beating Gang initiations usually in volve a beating, the warrior said. The boy who wants in the club must submit to fight with two or more members. " Girls play an important part, but hot a very admirable role. "Most of the fighting's over girls," the gang member said. "Some fellow tells another gang member to keep his hands off his girl and he doesn't, and then trouble starts." Any weapon goes in this dan gerous teenage society where ihe only major crime is failure to fight for another gang member in trouble. They showed neither shock nor sorrow that a gang member was blamed for the murder of a youth who didn't even belong to any gang and had merely been walking home from a movie. The victim will be bur ied this week in Tamaqua, Pa. The three warriors shrugged off the murder. "We just want to have a good time," the young est said. GRANGE Cetral Point Grange Central Point Grange Willi meet Friday night, May fi. Earl Jossy of the Jackson County Ex tension service will be the speaker during lecture hour. His subject will be "weeds and their control in Rogue River valley." Juvenile Grange and Mothers Day will also be featured on the program. 1 Ladies will serve the annual Extension Unit Festival lunch eon May 5. Operation Grain Bag: Grange barley field is doing well. Squir rels, which were eating the ten der shoots, have been poisoned. Central Point Juvenile Grange will meet Friday, May 6, at 8 p.m. in the Juvenile hall at Cen tral Point Grange. Members are reminded that they are on the serving committee for that eve ning. Also some are taking part in the lecture hour. Matron Lucile Frink hopes plans for the posters are being completed. As a result, they do not want to help with the housework, no. matter how busy their wives may be. The husband whose wife wrote the following letter feels differently. Should I humor him in his hobby or should I insist that he do tha whole job or none at all?" (A) You are lucky to have a husband who enjoys cooking and who is getting some experience in it, even if he does concentrate on certain types of food. A day may come when you are ill or when you are called away from home by an emergency, and your husband will then be able to take over during your absence. To your husband, cooking is un- Try to keep it enjoyable, so that his interest will remain alive. Humor him to a certain extent by helping him to exper iment with different tastes and by cleaning up when he has fin ished. But also try to increase the number of things he cooks. Why not cut recipes out of newspapers and magazines and suggest that would be fun to try them out? If they are for foods he has never tried before, help him follow the instructions and work out the dish together. Wednesday, May 4, 1955 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE V Sales Tax Expected To Be on 1956 Ballot Ontario (U.RK Attorney Martin Gallegher, who led four county representatives to Salem recently to protest sales tax legis lation, predicted today that the sales tax would be placed on the 1956 general election ballot. He said the measure would go on the ballot by initiative - refer endum procedure and called on residents of eastern Oregon to get ready to battle the measure. One of the dangers of a refer endum, he said, vould be that it would proba;1-" be poorly drawn up and even less accept able to area residents than the measure defeated in this session of the state Legislature. He said eastern Oregonians feared a sales tax because some of them thought it would bring about a business decline and a mass movement of people across the state line into Idaho to make tax-free purchases.
