29 Confirmed Cases Of Polio Shown in Vaccinated Children Washington (U.R The U.S. Public Health Service aaid latt yesterday its latest official tabu lation showed 29 confirmed polio cases among more than 4,000.000 children inoculated with Salk vaccine. Of these, it said, 26 cases oo curred among the estimated 500, 000 children who received the now-embargoed vaccine from the Cutter Laboratories, Berke ley, Calif. Three cases occurred among the remaining 3,500,000 or more children who received vaccine from other manufacturers, which is still being used. UP Tabulation Shows 35 An independent tabulation by the United Press showed a total of 35 cases, of which 30 in volved children who received only Cutler vaccine, four in volved children who received vaccine from the Eli Lilly Co., Indianapolis, and one involved a child who received a first shot of Cutter vaccine and a second hot of vaccine from another manufacturer, not so far iden tified. The official tabulation of the Public Health Service has lagged lightly behind the unofficial count because of delays which Man weds 55ife! Proper Spacing Of Vaccine Shots Said Important Atlantic City UR) Jr. Jonas E. Salk told the 47th an nual session of the American Society for Clinical Investigation yesterday that the proper spac ing of his polio vaccine shots is the most important factor in the prevention of infantile paral ysis. Speaking before 1200 clini cians, physicians and scientists at Steel Pier, Salk said his investi gation showed the first two in jections should be given two to four weeks apart, with a third injection seven to 10 months later. The importance of spacing be tween injections, Salk said, is that it allows the body to build up its resistance to polio to what he termed the "hyper-reactive state." Salk said it is too early to tell yet how long immunity is pro vided oy his vaccine. He described the "hyper-reactive state" is the condition of the body where the introduction of only a small amount of polio infection will "trigger" the body's mechanism to produce ef fective quantities of anti-bodies to fight off the infection. Chairman Selected Portland U.R) James E. Bryson of Portland has been chosen chairman of the Port land regional committee for an education conference here May 12. The Portland conference will be one of 22 held in the state during May and June. It will lay groundwork for a state confer ence called by Gov. Paul Pat terson for June 15 and 16. By DELOS 6MITH United Press Science Editor New York U.PJ Here are scientific revelations of two things every motorist ought to know but will have a hard time finding out about from automo bile dealers and repairmen. They are: 1. What a "vapor lock" is; 2. What to do about it. A "vapor lock" kills the en gine and you can run down your battery trying to start it up again. And the blankety-blank thing had been purring like a cat right up to the instant it went dead! What happened was that the gasoline in the fuel system changed from a liquid into a vapor before it was supposed to. From gasoline tank all the way to the side ' of the carburetor, this fuel system can pass along liquid gasoline only. Gasoline vapor stymies it. Do Nothing What to do about it is noth ing. As the stalled engine cools, the heat in the fuel system goes down. The vaporized gas con denses back into liquid. And then the engine will start up again. Nature unlocks the "lock." If you want to hurry nature along you can lift the engine hood and let cooler air in. Or you can wrap wet clothes around the fuel pump, especially its intake- side. That's where the "vapor lock" usually forms. But it could be on the intake side of the carburetor, so wrap a wet cloth around it, too. "Vapor locks" have been ap pearing in epidemics for some time now. The places where they strike usually are parkways, leading into cities on hot and Oregon Liquor Prices Increased Portland (U.R) Liqu r prices have been boosted 25 cents a fifth and 15 cents a pint by the liquor control commis sion. All types of liquor were af fected except wines and cordials by the price hike which the OLCC attributed to recommen dations by legislative taxation committees. The senate committee on as sessment and taxation recom mended that prices be raised to add $4,000,000 above the com mission's forecast $82,000,000 revenue. Salem (U.R) The -Joint Ways and Means Committee has recommended pay increases for its top elected officials and jurists. ' close Sunday evenings when the cars are jammed up for miles and there is much starting and stopping. Dealers Look Blank Try to find out from the auto mobile dealer what, a vapor lock is, and he looks blank. Pushed, he may say that maybe it is some odd thing that happens to the cars of his competitors, but certainly never happens to his car. This reporter had local dealers running like rabbits. But he finally found inde pendent scientists who said the "vapor lock" was the inevitable result of automotive progress. The older cars are immune. The newer, ones are susceptible be cause they're so very efficient in vaporizing , gasoline fully without there being any liquid residue to seep down into the crankcase. The higher and high er "high test" gasolines have a part, too they vaporize almost with a hot glance. . A Remedy Seed Engine Engineers of the Texas Com pany offered a practical how-to-avoid suggestion: If you're caught in seemingly endless traf fic jam in hot weather, never turn off the engine. It may not start again. Instead, speed the engine up a bit from its normal idling speed, without racing it. That'll turn the fan over faster and keep the fuel system cooler.
