UJ?) An ar ray of weather - sensitive robot devices is working round -the -rlnrk here to speed stockpiling of Salk polio vaccine. PrnHurtion of trie rubv red vaccine is a highly complex and technical operation. Scientists at Cutter laooraxones nere repun that it takes from three to four months to produce the vaccine. One of the critical production periods is during the incubation of the virus. During this seven day incubation period tempera tures must be precisely maintain ed or the culture will be ruined. To guard against the slightest change in temperatures, elec tronic instruments (developed by Minneapolis - Honeywell, Phila delphia) and sensitive enough to detect even one-fourth of a de gree of temperature variation have been harnessed to automat ically monitor temperatures 24-hours-a-day. Vhe units are in use in three of the incubating rooms used at Cutter. U.R) Rheu matic fever is the largest single cause of death from disease in the age group from five to 16 years, according to a member of Iowa's health department. Dr. Walter L. Beirring, direc tor, division of geratology, heart and chronic diseases, said rheumatic fever takes twice as many lives as does tuberculosis, scarlet fever, measles, whooping cough or diphtheria. He said many deaths in adult life are blamed on heart disease, when rheumatic fever is the ba sic cause. Dr. Beirring said care ful surveys show that 90 per cent of all heart disease under 30 years of age is caused by rheumatic fever. . Q30 8JWH3 1229 COURT ST. PYORRHEA IS ought to stipulate at the out set that I am no authority on pyorrhea or anything else and whatever I jx- may say about it is merely my belief or opinion. Pyorrhea is a misleading term it means flow or d i s charge of pus. - The full term is Or. Brsdr pyorrhea al veolaris, flow or discharge of pus from tooth socket. Old timers jn the dental pro fession regarded pyorrhea as a specific disease and accordingly named it "Rigg's disease (after John M. Riggs, an American dentist of the nineteenth cen tury). Pyorrhea alveolaris, accord ing to Louis I. Grossman, D. D S. D. M. D., "denotes a group of complex pathological manifesta tions which arise primarily from a functional atrophy of the al veolar process" the part of the maxilla, the upper jaw bone, supporting the tooth sockets. This is one of many definitions of pyorrhea, though there are many others each authority seems to have his own concept. Just what functional atrophy means, I don't know. Atrophy, says Webster, means wasting away for want of nourishment, nutrition, that is. Atrophy is indeed an effect of malnutrition, u n d e r n u trition, starvation, deprivation. And when I went to school (medical school) impairment of function was the feature of atrophy with which physicians were most con cerned. Some of my medical col I was going to say colleagues, but perhaps I had better say my Longshoremen To Pay For Vaccine Purchase San Francisco (U.R) Chil dren of West Coast longshore men were assured today of get ting free polio vaccine. The board of trus'tees of the joint union - employer welfare fund of the Pacific Maritime As sociation and the International Longshoremen's and Warehouse men's Union said the funds will pay for a series of three shots of the Salk vaccine for each of some 9000 eligible children in California, Oregon and Washing ton ports. The trustees said the fund will pay just for the vaccine and not physician's fees. Children more than 15 years of age, and chil dren receiving free shots in school will not be eligible, the trustees said. Giant Postcard Sent To Washington Washington (U.R) A giant postcard, made of a sheet of ply wood 4-by-8 feet, has arrived in Washington from Lebanon, Ore., in support of partnership con struction of Green Peter and Cougar dams. The postcard was to be "un veiled" on the steps of the new House office building today with Rep. Harris Ellsworth, who in troduced a partnership bill for the Santiam and McKenzie river dams presiding. Some 1000 signatures were on the ''postcard," which was be lieved the largest in the world. But at that, the physicians can't hold a candle to the dentists. I can't blame the dentists so much. After all, who caught 'em teach ing that "a clean tooth never decays?" Sometimes dentists express their synthetic repug nance to my teaching that it is a waste of time and money brushing the teeth . . . and they imply that my mouth must' be well, you know. Nevertheless I'm always ready to submit to examinations of my mouth and teeth by experts and compari son with the condition of the mouths and teeth of any group of men of my age. I never brush my teeth but I believe in spend ing my spare change for treat ment by any dentist rather than squandering it on glorified soap that purports to contain some mysterious substance that kills the germs in a few seconds. In pieces about pyorrhea to follow I'll tell what I believe causes the trouble "and give the best advice I can about preven tion and treatment.
