Porter, a , resident of Medford for 1 26 years, sold his interests in a eon- struction firm late in 1954. James Collins, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Collins, 2224 East Main st., has qualified for flight training in the United States Air Force. He is stationed j at Lackland Air Force base, San Antonio, Texas, and is to re main there until the middle of May when he will be assigned to a new base. Lieutenant Collins recently wrote that he had just met Sec ond Lt. Bob Gray, Medford, who is also stationed at Lackland. Both have been at the same base some time without knowing that the other was also stationed there. IN ALASKA Donald T. Phelps, airman sec ond class in the Air Force, whose wife and daughter live at Gold Hill, is serving in Alaska with special services. In addition to his regular work he is a radio announcer for SKIMO, "voice of Baffin island." Here he was a member of a music group known as the "Three Notes." and he also sang with the local SPEBSQSA group. Fire thought to have started in a closet where paint trfinner was stored damaged a vacant three-room house at 1375 South Columbus ave; this morning. Firemen said they received an alarm about 8 a.m. that smoke was coming, from the house, owned by Harriet Gibbs. On arrival with two pumper trucks they found one room in flames. They stated that the fire was confined to the one room al though windows were cracked and smoke damage was exten sive. The owner, who lives in an other residence at the same ad dress, reported that she had been painting,, papering the house for rental, according to firemen. They said that the paint thinner and other similar ma terials were stored in a closet in the bathroom. A neighbor reportedly no ticed the smoke and informed the owner, who turned in the alarm.
