EKRCT MTOTOUD OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday,' April 28, I95S Investigation Under Way on Folio Vaccine From gutter Lateatera: i .. : . . Program To Conquer Infantile Paralysis In Short Time Endangered by Happenings New York (U.R) A scientist Salk, the vaccine's developer, and a scientific administrator close to the development of the Salk anti-polio vaccine said to day that what they had most feared might happen, had hap pened and it endangered the whole big-scale program to con quer paralytic polio in a com paratively short time. They referred, of course, to 11 children coming down with polio after they had been vaccinated with vaccine prepared by one of the six pharmaceutical houses licensed by the federal govern ment to make it. Their instsmt recollection was of the dictum of Dr. Jonas -E. "Properly prepared and prop erly used, the vaccine is com pletely safe and , completely effective," he said and it should be kept in mind that by "completely effective" he ex empted the very small minority of persons who, by the nature of their body chemistry, are very poor antibody producers. No scientist disputes the first part of the statement that when "properly prepared . . . the vaccine is completely safe." Formaldehyde does "kill" or, more scientifically, "deactivate" polio viruses. That has been proven beyond the thinnest shadow of a doubt. Every virus that goes into properly prepared Salk vaccine has been "deacti vated" with formaldehyde. Scientists and administrators close to the vaccination program saw the tragic events in the West as an ideal . tool for the ill-informed and the malicious to whip up public hysteria against the vaccine. They had two par ticular individuals in mind one a scientist, the other a non-scientist, but both commanding large audiences who have been un friendly to the vaccine from the very beginning. Telephone 2-9147 27 North Holly m the scientists urged parents to keep in mind that the safety of "properly prepared" vaccine is beyond question. Scientists knew long before Dr. Salk started working on his vaccine, that viruses could be "deactivated" by formaldehyde and other chemicals. Dr. Salk was confi dent enough of his own labora tory demonstrations with hu man beings as well as with monkeys that he . vaccinated his own three sons over a year ago. And Dr. Hart E. Van Riper, medical director of the National Foundation for Infantile Paraly sis, vaccinated his son. Susan Hayward Won't Make Up Hollywood (U.R) Fiery Susan Hayward, nearly recovered from her suicide attempt, expects to leave Cedars of Lebanon hospital tomorrow but she said there was no chance she might patch things up with her ex-husband, Jess Barker. The 35-year-old actress re leased a brief statement through her studio yesterday in which she squelched rumors of a possi ble reconciliation but offered no explanation of why she swallow ed the massive dose of. sleeping pills that nearly took her life Tuesday. "There is not the slightest pos sibility of a reconciliation," she said. "If Mr. Barker can discuss the future of our children in a rational manner, I shall always be willing to confer with him .on this subject." Barker rushed to Hollywood from New Orleans when he learned of, Miss Hayward'.s ' at tempt on her life. He was not permitted to see his former wife by her physician, Dr. Stanley Imerman. The only visitor Miss Hayward had was her close friend and agent, Ned Marlin, who saw her briefly yesterday. Barker at first was reported eager for a reconciliation, but upon his arrival here - he indi cated his primary concern was with the couple's twin sons, Tim and Greg, 10. NABISCO Sugar Honey GRAHAMS icials Seek To Determine Cause of Illness By UNITED PRESS A cross-country investigation was launched today to deter mine whether inoculations of Calif ornia - produced Salk vac cine have infected children with the very disease it was supposed to prevent-infantile paralysis. At least nine children and possibly 13 have caught polio since receiving inoculations of vaccine produced by the Cutter Laboratories of Berkeley, Calif. One of the children died and two 7-year-kld boys are in iron lungs. ; Health experts said there was no way of telling whether the Cutter vaccine caused . the dis ease. !They also pointed out that some of the children might have had polio before they received the shots and that in at least one case the afflicted child was recovering from an ear infection when he was. inoculated. However, emergency meas ures were taken to make sure the Cutter vaccine is safe. Two health service specialists were rushed across the nation to Berkeley to study the com pany's production methods. An other U.S. disease expert was en route from Atlanta, Ga.. to Idaho, where the polio death occurred. Meanwhile," the "federal gov ernment banned all Cutter vac cine. Mass inoculation programs in California, where the Cutter vaccine was most widely used, were halted in 26 counties. In Washington, the National Institutes of Health began tests to check the vaccine's safety, purity and potency. Elsewhere, the flurry caused by the government ban appeared to be dying down as officials discovered that distribution of the Cutter vaccine had been pri marily confined to .the West. At Philadelphia, Pa., officials halted mass inoculations of 30,- 000 parochial school children, but decided later to go ahead. Investigations were launched in other cities to make sure the Cutter vaccine is not being used. Doctors were warned not to use the VoCcIiie in inoculations of private patients. The cases of polio among chil dren inoculated with Cutter vac cine were: California: Five paralytic polio cases and four suspected cases. Pocatello, Idaho: A 7-year-old girl died of bulbar polio mine days after she was inoculated. A 6-day-old boy was also strick en. Chicago: An 18-month-old boy was hospitalized with polio af fecting both legs and an arm He received an inoculation of Cutter vaccine from a private physician after ' suffering from an ear infection. Health author ities have warned against in oculating children who have been ill. Denver, Colo.: A baby who was inoculated April 15 was stricken April 22. The child is still severely paralyzed. Denver doctors were advised to give gamma globulin injections to all children who received Cutter vaccine inoculations. In all,, the. Cutter. yaccine went to 43 states. However, the laboratory .is. not .a. major, con-, tributor to the mass inoculation of school children and in most of. the country. The two top .producers for .the mass . vaccination program promptly issued statements say-. ing they had received no reports of children afflicted with polio. after receiving .inoculations of of their vaccine. , ...... kv I ' ' 1 1 No Evidence of Vaccine Panic New York (U.R) The Nation-ho, which has also reported polio . program had been completed In al Foundation for Infantile Paral- cases, and Hawaii. Detroit JflJ.R)- Parke, Davis & Co. today began "across the talble" discussions with the CIO Oil, Chemical and Atomic Work ers Union aimed at avoiding a strike which would cut off a ma jor supply of Salk vacine. ysis said today that it had re ceived no evidence of panic or refusal of Salk anti-polio vaccine as a result of yesterday's recall of one laboratory's vaccine pro duction following some outbreak of the disease. Dr. Hart E. Van Riper, founda tion medical director, said that in fact health officers in Cali fornia, where most of the polio : cases occurred, asked immedia tely for vaccine to replace the withdrawn Cutter Laboratories product and complete their ino culations of first and second grade children. He said he be lieved about two "thirds of the more than 400,000 ccs of Cutter vaccine in California had -already been used. More than 100,000 ccs of other ..vaccine had also been supplied there.
