MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TR1BUWE- THRES Tornado, Dust Storms, Snow Greet Benson on Tour of Troubled States Wednesday. April 57, 1131 Huge Hailstones Bring Damage in Oklahoma, Texas Br UNITED PRESS A stranga combination of dust terms. 90 - degree temperatures and almost a half foot of snow belted the nation's West today. - High winds over Oklahoma and Texas spawned at least one tornado and then swept north ward through the Great Plains. Strong gusty winds and thick dust were predicted for Western Kansas, Western Nebraska and Northern New Mexico. Temperatures meanwile soared into the 90s in New Mexi co and the Oklahoma panhandle. But cool Pacific air was spill ing over the continental divide, dumping temperatures 30 de crees into the 20s in Nevada and piling up five inches of snow at Salt Lake City, Utah. The winds, heat, and dust were a sequel to a night of wild weather in Oklahoma and Texas. Buildings Smashed A tornado raced through a farm community near Shawnee, Okla., blowing over several frame buildings, and at least three other twister funnels were sighted in the state. At the same time strong winds tore up trees at Anadarko, Okla., and swirline dust blotted out the stars at Enid, Okla. Tornado warnings were lifted . for parts of Texas and Oklaho ma early today, but not until violent hail storms had battered iorre areas. Hailstones the size oi chicken eggs damaged cars at Cordell, Okla., and the hail stones which pounded Wichita Falls, Tex., were the size of lemons. The crop - ripping winds pro vided a graphic demonstration of the Southwest's troubles for Agriculture Secretary Ezra Ben- Sheppard Affidavits Accepted; Judge Plans Decision Cleveland U.R) Common Pleas Judge Edward Blythin to day accepted seven affidavits on which convicted wife-killer Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard has placed his hopes for a new trial. The hearing, granted on de fense claims of "newly discov ered evidence," consumed only 20 minutes. Judge Blythin said he would make his decision "either on notice or tomorrow.' The affidavits were submitted by William J. Corrigan, head of the young osteopath brain sur geon's legal counsel. There was no testimony at the brief hearing. Dr. Sam, attired in his famil iar charcoal flannel suit, white shirt and blue knitted tie, smiled warmly at his two brothers and their wives as, he entered the courtroom handcuffed to a dep uty sheriff. His smile was re turned, although none of his fam ily rose in greeting. The principal affidavit was a son and an international arid lands conference. Only Dust Fait Benson toured the wind-raked tirea yesterday, seeking answers to the problems of wind and ero sion In Colorado he ordered his bus stopped and walked out to feel the soil in a field. The top two inches were pure dust. The international conference on arid lands picked a good spot for its meeting Albuquerque, in the heart of the wind-scarred Northern New Mexico. Six hun dred delegates from all over the world are attending. Elsewhere in the nation, fair skies predominated in most re gions. However, light rains spattered the East from New England into Virginia, showers and thunderstorms continued in the Oklahoma - Arkansas region, and there were ; showers and snow flurries over the Northern Rockies as far south" at Northern Colorado. Corrigan outlined contents of the document to Judge Bly thin, but did not ask Dr. Kirk to testify. The other half dozen docu ments "added . to it," Corrigan said. Four pertained to condi tion of the murder home, and were signed, individually, by Dr. Sam, his brothers, Drs. Stephen A. and Richard N. Shep pard, and defense attorney Ar thur Petersilge. Corrigan said they showed the home was undisturbed between the time it was returned to its owners by the state last Dec. 23 and until Kirk arrived in Feb- I , ' jj !, ; I : ' fftf' KEEP THOSE EYES DOWN! Scientists Fly Into Atomic Clouds To Test Radiation 1 Las Vegas, Nev. (U.R) ,The Air Force dsiclosed today that daring scientists have been fly ing into the boiling atomic clouds shortly after nuclear de tonations to measure the dangers of radiation to airplanes, their pilots and passengers. . These men not only wear sen sitive film badges on their cloth ing, but swallow a capsule con taining film to measure radia tion inside the human body. The capsule is retrieved by a string held in the scientist's mouth. The history-making, data-collecting flights are made by an 11-man group from the research directorate of the Air Force special weapons center at Kirt land Air Force Base, New Mexico. Other recording devices in the group's T-33 jet planes measure radiation in the cockpit and on outside metal surfaces of the plane. A spokesman said that if ground . crewmen could be shown that aircraft were not made dangerously radioactive by flights through atomic clouds, "much time-c onsuming and expensive decontamination . . . might be abandoned." Capt. Charles S. Oldfield of San Francisco and Col. Ernest A. Pinson of the Air Force's re search center biophysics division irom Kirtland who lead the group, said the inside of the atomic cloud is dark and brick red in color and has an unusual odor similar to that created by a bolt of liehtnine. Hawaiian Volcanic Explosion Fizzles Paho. T. H. (U.R) Hawaii's active Puna Coast was rocked by a new volcanic blast yesterday, but the eruption fizzled out a short time later. Volcanologist Dr. Gordon MacDonald said the new disturb ance began at 2:10 p.m. '(PST) with a violent blast that sent a fountain of lava 70 feet in the air. However, a few hours later the volcano quieted down and cinders replaced the molten lava that had been pouring from a six-foot wide fissure. Two tiny flows of lava crept harmlessly j into a hollow 75 feet away be- j fore the activity died. j The latest eruption was pre-j ceded by extra heavy sulphur turner over the past few days and two or three recorded earth quakes. TO STUDY PROBLEMS Salem (U.R) A resolution to create an interim committee N to study state welfare problems was measure was approved oy me ruary to conduct his lnvestfga- tion. The fifth and sixth affidavits were signed by Dr. Virgil Hawes, an osteopath at Bay View Hos pital, and the Rev. Robert G. Scully. Corrigan explained Hawes had "removed a blood spot from a wardrobe in the murder bedroom," the Rev. Dr. Scully had mailed the spot to Kirk on the West Coast for his examination. Corrigan told the court he could find no precedent In court history that would allow him to present witnesses, so he called none. The state was prepared to answer any. testimony, however, and had arranged for legal and medical experts to attend , the hearing. The early adjournment came as a surprise. Judge Blythin was expected to make his decision sometime tomorrow. JEAN HART and BERT PREE COOPERATING IN THE . . .
