He is no devotee of rich food and late evenings. In this waning 1954-55 ban quet and convention season, the President has made it an in creasing practice to pass up the meal itself and "drop in on a gathering for a brief speech after tne guests have eaten. When former President Tru man was here recently, he was dining at the Mayflower Hotel where he spotted Columnist Drew Pearson, a frequent object of presidential wrath when Mr. Truman was in office. Business Bureau Warns of Peddlers Portland The Portland Bet ter Business bureau today warn ed Oregon residents against be ing bilked by itinerant peddlers and fake horticultural experts. Lyle Janz, manager of the bu reau, reported that many com plaints have been received con cerning purchases of "fine top soil" which turns out to be "refuse soil," fly-by-night opera prices, and fake tree doctors. It rwas recommended - that those having doubts about the men or experts should contact reliability of door to door sales men or experts should contact their local chamber of com merce. And "Backstairs" recently re ceived this hard-to-evaluate note frcm Mrs. S. D. Jackson of John son City, Tenn.: "I enjoy seeing you on TV always sitting be hind the President, looking like you did not know much, but I .always know that when you speak, you will have something to s&y." Mrs. Jackson, thank you, I guess. ' Historical note: Where Mr Eisenhower now practices golf shots on the south lawn of the WhUe House, there grazed a herd of sheep during the Wilson ad ministration. Contemporary accounts say that ice cream was first served in the White House by Dolly Madison. Some of the men who tried the frozen dessert for the first time put down their dishes in hasty alarm and asked to be served straight whiskey. Notice of School Election Upon Question of Increasing Tax Levy Over Amount Limited by Section 11, Article XI, Sate Constitution Notice is hereby given that an election will be held in School District No. 49 of Jackson County, State of Oregon, from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., on May 19, 1955, at Medford Senior High School in said school district, for the purpose of submitting to the legal voters of said district the question of increasing the tax levy for the fiscal year 1955-195.6 over the amount limited by section 11, article XI, of the Constitution of Oregon.
