' The FBI said its Oakland of fice had studied notes sent to Aaron Frank, Portland depart ment store executive, and Wal ter Boysen head of Boysen Paint company. Paper, methods of extortion and typev -7s used differed in each case, tn,, study showed. An extortionist demanded $75,000 from Boysen upon threat of injury to him or his family. Frank, whose retail store was bombed about two weeks ago by a would-be extortionist, was told to pay $50;000 to avoid a second bombing. But in real life he is a quiet, gentle man who got into horror movies by mis take and was haunted by the stigma. Lugosi once Aline Motby was a romantic leading man on the stage. After he achieved fame as "Dracula," the fine actor's career was de pendent upon playing the mad scientist who pours evil potions into smoky test tubes and keeps a monster locked up in his labor atory. , He had four unhappy mar riages. Once during a lull in the mon ster movie fad he was on relief. Now, at 72, the man who used to send chills up film fans' spines does not appear frightening. Calling himself a "broken, old man," Lugosi is in a state hos pital at his own request after 20 years of narcotics addiction. Once a Heart Throb Lugosi came to the United States in 1923 to appear in ro mantic comedies on Broadway. He was a heart throb until he ac cepted a part in the hit play, "Dracula." "When it closed, Bela Lugosi was a monster in human form, and then the only work I could get was monstering," he sadly said recently in an interview. He played Frankenstein's monster after once turning down the role in favor of Boris Kar loff because the make-up was un comfortable. Lugosi also played the monster's sidekick with the broken neck. In 63 horror films he killed more than 300 charac ters. He was hanged, burned, Discovery Makes -,7:? 4 Z"', IP w Just recently a well known scientist perfected a new tiny capsule that combines not one but ALL THE RECOGNIZED proven aids to reducing he found in all the advertised products offered today. WELL,SORRy-I GOTTA UP NOVV-SAY HELLO TO By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent frozen, smothered by lava and drowned in swamps on the screen. He was a zombie, a bloody phantom, a hungry ape and a vampire with steel claws. "I didn't know if you were a success in one character in this country you were branded," he said. "Unfortunately they haven't let me play decent characters since." In the early '30s the monster man had a mansion, two cars and a fat bank account. Then British censors laid down the law on horror pictures. Holly wood stopped making them. By the end of 1937 Lugosi and his wife were collecting $15 a week relief. But in 1941 a new horror movie cycle started, and Lugosi worked again. Then came more lean years. Recently the one-time romantic leading man did a cruel satire of his monster self in a Las Vegas burlesque house. He admits now, "I gambled all that salary away." Lugosi came home to an empty house as his fourth wife divorced him two years ago. He admits he has been eating for the last few weeks because of generosity of "friends. The bushy-browed actor actu ally was afraid of newspaper re porters, child actors, noise of any kind and, he told me, of dying. "Death is the only thing that is really frightening to- me," he said. "The calendar turns, and eventually you have to go." As We Live By ELIZABETH HUHLOCK, PH.D. Soft Music Is Relaxing, But Not Station Changing Many boys and girls feel that they can study best when they are listening to the radio. Re cently, in one of my columns, I pointed out why they are wrong about this. One letter of protest is worth quoting. - (Q) "I do not agree with your poini of view about studying when the radio is going. I am now a married woman, but when I was in high school I could never have gotten my les sons done unless I listened to the radio. I worked after school and was so tense and tired when I was ready to study that I needed the soft music from the radio lo rlax me. I admit, that I could not study and listen to many other programs, but I think your advice about not studying when the radio is play ing should be modified lo ex clude relaxing music." (A) If a person is tired and tense, there is no question about thp fact that soft music aids that nerson to re lax. And, when one is relaxed, one can study or con centrate on any mental work better than when one is tense. Dr. Hurlock How ever, the writer of the above letter Has overlooked several arguments against using the 'radio as an aid to study which I should like to point out First, there are relatively few programs of soft music during the evening hours. And second ly, when they are given, they are presented on different pro grams from different stations. That means that the student must leave his work every 15 minutes or so to change the dial to nother station. This ft bound to be distracting and to break the train of his thought. Then, too, few musical pro gram? are without some com mercial announcements. The talking of a commercial can be as distracting to a student as the talking in a comedy or news program. , If a person is tird and tense, it would be more efficient to relax with music for a short time after the evening meal and then start to study. Under such conditions, he would avoid the distractions that listening to the radio invariably brings. (COPYRIGHT 1955. GENERAL FEATURES CORP.) On TKe Side (Distributed by King Note a reference to engage ment rings for men. Why not? It is by no means a new idea. A New Yorker informed me that 20 years ago she presented her then fiance with an engagement ring.. This ring had a diamond in the middle and a sapphire on each side. Sapphire was the re cipient's birthstojie. Were you presented with a ring by the girl of your dreams when marriage was decided upon? If not, why not? Take this up with the lady in the case and demand an ex planation.. Long Wear Does your wife know who Monsieir Marcel Boussac is? She should. He was indirectly re sponsible for that feminine fash ion known as "The New Look." He furnished the money with which Christian Dior started his dressmaking establishment. Mon sieur Boussac is a multimillion aire. He owns 37 textile factories in France. At the moment he is a little bit worried. So are other European textile manufacturers. A Hungarian claims to have ori ginated a method of manufactur ing and . treating textiles that will make various articles of ap-! parel wear 20 times as long as they do now. For example, he ; says a shirt made by his method ', will wear well for at least 20 ; years. Wonder if he could make a pair of nylon stockings last that long with no runs? ' Redheads Natural readhaired women are very scarce. Four out of five strawberry blondes of today are synthetic types. It is so easy to tell the difference between a syn thetic and a natural redhead that even a man can do it. The hair dyeing experts have certainly not yet mastered the art of making imitation red hair look natural. Great Lover Do you know what Don Juan's last name was? For instance, a government re port revals that one firm here is building a new factory to manufacture window-type" air conditioners. The factory will start production in August, using certain imported compo nent parts. In the blueprint stage are a new torch factory, a metal win dow factory, a cotton mill with 10,000 spindles and a cigarette plant. The government says that the plastic-ware and enamel-ware in dustries also are booming. A number of small manufacturers are "continually" starting pro duction. A new enamel-ware plant will be built soon, with the owners meanwhile using ah old building to house their opera tions. ' The trend is significant. It is estimated that about 30 per cent of Hongkong's trade is with lo cally produced goods.. In 1949, the total was one per cent.
