The message was broadcast by the station's news editor, Jack Wandell, as the preface to a regular news broadcast. "We strongly suspect that a good many Siberial Russians secretly tune -in to KBYR not only to hear our music but more probably to hear what the truth is by listening to our news broad casts," Wandell told his listen ers. SPECIALISTS IN HOMEWARES CENTRAL POINT MEDFORD Piclcin' Pears News and Notes From Camp White By SID HOLLINGWORTH Several of the members have expressed interest recently in the operation of the Canteen Service, since ' it does provide the means set up by the Veter ans Administration for meeting their needs in the extras of food, clothing and supplies. Before this service was estab lished in 1948, the operation of the "general store" was handled as a private concession. The in tent of the new arrangement was to offer an equivalent to the canteens of, the armed services. Difficulties encountered at the inception, in making contracts immediately after the war when items were scarce, and in admin istration as a branch of Special Services, have been ironed out. The Veterans Canteen Service is a separate branch of the Vet erans Administration, responsible at stations to the manager, and coming under the general super vision of the department of medi cine and surgery. The entire operation ia self-supporting. , The financial load is carried through a .revolving fund, per mitting a uniformity of prices and services throughout the sys tem. The canteen in the smaller and more isolated hospitals can function below cost of operation through the "chain" arrange ment. Headquarters for the can teen service in this area is San Francisco, where matters of policy and purchases are han dled. At Camp White, the canteen includes the store where a lim ited variety of goods may be pur chased by members and person nel living at the station. There is also a food department, includ ing the coffee shop, as well as the barber shop. United Voluntary Services, Inc., will take over duties here tofore performed by the Ameri can Women's Voluntary Ser vicesr Inc., the advisory commit tee of the VAVS has been noti fied. The information was given to the committee by Helen F. Lengf eld, who organized the new group, and the Chief Medical Di rector of the VA, in correspond ence recently. National VAVS representative for the United Voluntary Serv ices is Mrs. William Zechendorf, New York. The local representa tives are Mrs. . J. Devoe and Mrs. Belle Schenk. The American War Mothers, of Salem, who have "adopted" Ward A-l, the wheel-chair squad, sent in $30 for the purchase of canteen books for the ward members. Postmaster Arthur Scarseth will have his hands full this week getting the 200.000 VFW Buddy" poppies off to their des tinations throughout' Oregon, which added to the 9,000 Ameri can Legion poppies sent last week to complete that shipment, brings the total poppy manufac ture at Camp White, for Memor ial Day sale, to more than 500, 000." The members are paid for this work by the respective or ganizations. ; Legion figures- show 33,500 were sent to Alaska, with 293, 850 going to posts throughout the state. About half a dozen small orders remain to be filled, Mike Tanzell reports. Special arrangements had to be made with the Medford post office to get the VFW order under way. Franklin Girard, who functions as "managing editor" of Dom inews, in addition to his regular duties as recreation director, is having difficulty finding a mem ber edtor for the camp paper. Ross Lewis, who held the job longer than any of the four or five who proceded him during the past two years, decided over the week end to return to Cali fornia. The Camp White writing fra ternity find the publication af fected with something more than "upper respiratory infection." Malcolm Badger, the old tele grapher, agreed to try it for a while. t Bud Ash returned from a whirlwind vacation, touring points of interest throughout the west, in time to take over the assembling of exhibits for the Hobby Fair. He was disappoint ed when the Fair was called off under the quarantine. Now he is home in bed with the flu him self. Frank Glonning, his chief , made a leisurly tour of California and purchased a house trailer, during his week off duty. About 28,000 Americans are killed each year in home acci dents. ' The Rio Grande irrigates farms both in Mexico and the U.S. THERE STILL WORK TO DO Dr. Jonas E. (U.R) Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr., said Friday night the Republi cans have indicted more than six times as many labor rack eteers in the last two years as the Democrats did in the pre vious eight years. The attorney general said be fore the southwest legal foun dation that only 23 persons were indicted by the Democrats from 1945 to 1952. Of these, only five were convicted, he said. 46 Convictions But the Republicans, since taking over, have indicted 249 and obtained 46 convictions, Brownell claimed. Forty two of the 149 still must be brought to trial. He said his office is con tinuing to open new cases at the rate of 50 a month. "The conclusion is inescapable that the relationship between the long years with no enforce ment of these salutary laws and the flourishing state of industrial racketeering that we encoun tered in many parts of the coun try in 1953 is one of cause and effect," he said. Ciiei St. Louis Area ' He cited as an example labor conditions in the St. Louis area. He said a grand jury report dis closed that the construction in dustry there "was subject to a reign of terror." That was be cause a handful of thugs and gangsters had forcibly seized control of certain key labor unions, he said. Evan Dale, president, of the Southern Illinois district coun cil of the Hog Carrier's and Com mon Laborer's Union who is now serving a 15 year prison sentence, was cited as the most powerful racketeer in southern Illinois. In New York alone, Brownell said, 13 labor leaders were con victed for racketeering on the waterfront. Uncovered cases of racketeer- Oil The Side By E. V. Durling (Distributed by Kinf Featwee Syndicate, Inc.) What's the actual size of the regular drink of whiskey of fered in your favorite pub? Why not get a measuring glass and check on it?- A bar on Third Avenue, Manhattan, has the capacity of its glasses inscribed on same. It has one ounce, two ounce and three ounce glasses. A different price is asked for each. A clever idea. Has proven very popular with the cafe's clientele. 11 , Longeveily " "I am 62," writes a Brooklyn ite. "How can I prolong my life so I may see the Dodgers win a World Series, another filly win the Kentucky Derby and get my television set p a i d for?" Well, sir, as a starter I suggest you read the book titled "How to Live a Century," by Dr. James Martin Peebles, This was writ ten when ; Doctor Peebles, was 62. He lived thirty-eight years more, passing on at 100. He was born in 1822 and died in 1922. Graceful Eating - How does your wife look when eating? For example, when eating spaghetti? A clever woman, after long and consci entious practice, can eat spag hetti gracefully. However, no woman can possibly continue to look charming while eating corn on the cob. That is why that de lightful delicacy is rarely served at dinner parties. Her Technique & Feminine subscriber says her technique is to "keep her hus band guessing" as to whether she Joves him. This she says "keeps him on his toes." Per haps it does. It also probably keeps his mind off his business at times. It is a stupid and selfish way to treat a husband. Suggestion . ' . A very clever diamond aggregation. Do you know why House of David members wear beards? They do so because in the Bible, Old Test ament, Book of Leviticus, it says: "Thou shalt not round the corners of thy beard nor mar the corners of thy hair." -i Young Mothers Recently reported was a case of a 14 year old female who gave birth to twins. That's certainly very young to feature in - a double blessed event. However, it is not the United States re cord.
