What should a stranger in
town do if he or she needs a
doctor?
If the matter is not urgent
perhaps he can
ask the first
pleasant
spoken r e s i
dent he sees to
recommend a
good doctor.
Or in many
places today a
stranger may
telephone the
local County
Medical So
ciety or Association, which
maintains a telephone service
for this purpose. For example, in
the yellow pages of the tele
phone book in our community,
which is heavily infested with
specialists, the notice reads:

A young man ought to have
no trouble in getting dates un
less he does things that annoy
or embarrass the girls.
(Q) "I work five days a week.
Come Saturday, and Sunday, I
put on my cowboy outfit and go
cut. Girls do look at me, but it
seems that they are afraid to 90
out with me, I am co lonely. I
sit in the movies all by myself
and feel terrible. Why can't I
get girls to go with me like the
other fellows do? I make good
money and would like, to date
girls. I have an elderly mother
and she would like me to marry.
What is the matter with me?"
vA) The real trouble, it would
seem to me from what you have
said, is that you are trying to
attract the girls in the wrong
way. Of course girls look at
you when you appear on city
streets in a cowboy costume. Do
you blame them?
However, there is a big dif
ference between staring at you
and wanting to go out on dates
with you. Put yourself in a
girl's place. How would you feel
if you went to the movies or
even walked on the streets with
a man so uncoventionally
dressed that everyone stared at
him? Would you think" it worth
the price to pay for a date? I
question it.
If you want to have dates,
you w-il have to dress ana be
have in a more conventional
way. True, after a week of work,
yyu may feel tnat you wouia
like a complete change, but you
are carrying the change too far.
You can have week end clothes
that will be different from your
work clothes, but they must fol
low the conventional lines of the
clothing other men wear if you
want anyone, man or woman, to
be seen in public with you.

From the way the notice Is
worded I imagine the operator,
not the stranger, would decide
whether it is an emergency.
Although the chances are
that the physician the operator
might "locate" would be a good
one, that does not necessarily
mean that a doctor who is not a
member of the local county med
ical organization is not just as
good.
However, the operator at Du
nkirk 5-1S81 answered a re
quest for a recommendation of
a family physician in specialists'
heaven cheerfully enough, nam
ing one whose office is minutes
from the inquirer's home, and a
good one, as he proved to be,
even if he is a member of the
county medical association.
So, my dear stranger, when
you need a doctor and don't
know one, remember to look up
the county medical society's
telephone number and get re
liable direction there.

glycerine. Later the goitre disap
