London Newspapers '
Tell Price Increase
London (U.R) London's
three afternoon newspapers
raised their prices by one third
today when they resumed pub
lishing after a 27-day strike.
The papers, the Evening Stand
ard, the Star and the Evening
News, will cost two pence (about
2.2 U.S. cents) beginning Friday
instead of lVz pece (about 1.7
U.S. cents). Most evening news
papers elsewhere in the country
have been two pence for some
time.
The price of London morning
newspapers will remain un
changed. They now range from
IV2 pence for the Daily Mirror
to four pence (about 4.4 U.S.
cents) for the Times. .
The four-week walkout which
was ended late Wednesday cost
an estimated $11,300,000. In ad
dition, publishers face higher
wages as result of the agreement
which ended the strike.

Cheney Nine
Bills Seattle
Counterpart
Medford Cheney Studs' aim
to provide fans with a full sum
mer of professional baseball
here has resulted in confirma
tion of 42 encounters so far.
The slate includes two con
flicts with the best team in the
Pacific northwest last year and
Oregon's top independent club
of 1954. Business Manager Bill
Askwith said answers are still
to be received on letters seeking
six additional contests.
One of the highlights of the
season here will be the appear
ance of the Seattle Cheney Studs
against the Medford counterpart
on July 9 and 10. The Seattle
club won its city championship,
the Washington title and the
northwest toga in American
Baseball congress rivalry. It -was
in play-offs for the national
crown at Watertown, S.D.
To Face 'Jacks
Four games, two of them here,
have been arranged with the
Coos Bay-North Bend Lumber
jacks. The 'Jacks have just com
pleted a reorganization and have
decided to play independent ball
for the second year in a row.
There had been speculation that
CB-NB might ask entry in the
Southern Oregon League. It was
a member of the old Southwest
ern Oregon circuit.
Games ' with the Studs here
will be on July 27 and 28. The
clubs will vie at North Bend on
the same dates in August.
Medford's schedule within the
league itself accounts for 24 of
the contests. At one , stage the
Studs will have nine games in
11 days. There will be from one
to as high as four games at the
fairgrounds, park here every
week.
Phillie Chucker
Wild, Not Ornery
Brooklyn (U.R) There were
no Dodger hard feelings against
Phillie pitcher Steve Ridzik to
day even though he hit Carl Fu
rillo, Roy Campanella and Jack
ie Robinson with pitched balls
Wednesday night.
The consensus was that he was
wild, not ornery.
Robinson, whose helmet took
the full brunt of a Ridzik pitch
in the seventh innings said:
"He was just wild, that's all.
There were two men on when
he hit me and Duke Snider was
coming up next, so there isn't
much question that it was an
accident.

Oaks Park Favored
As Recreation Center
Portland" (U.R) City plan
ning director Lloyd Keefe said
yesterday that Oaks Park would
be easier of access and cost about
$1,000,000 less than neighbor
ing Ross Island as a site for
Portland's $8,000,000 exposition
recreation center.
Keefe told a veterans lunch
eon that Ross Island contained
valuable sand and gravel de
posits and that its owners want
$1,500,000 for it.
That, with the additional cost
of access bridges to Ross island,
would make the $1,000,000 dif
ference. A full report on both sides
will be made to the city planning
commission soon, Keefe said.
Twenty-four per cent of all
drivers involved in fatal auto
accidents in the IJ. S. last year
were under . 25 years old.
