Astonishing Results
"Expanded its education sys
tem; and taken drastic steps
toward its reshaping to fit mod
ern needs.
"Extended that great impetus
to all classes of Puerto Ricans to
the point where thousands are
today 'civically employed' and
are giving their thoughts and
labor to the task of directly im
proving their lives instead of ex
pecting their government to do
everything for them.
"Created social and economic
conditions under which its for
mer 'explosive' birth rate has
turned the corner and is rapidly
declining, so bringing the society
ever nearer the point where pop
ulation will finally be in balance
with the productive effort.
"Abolished its former colonial
status and created new forms of
political relationships under
which it is today an 'independ
ent' country within the frame
work of the United States, shar
ing the broader independence of
the latter."
But the accepted learning of
Dr. Hanson's science, all these
accomplishments in such a short
period are quite astonishing, and
he makes no effort to avoid an
astonished tone in his analytic
book, "Transformation:' The
Story of Modern Puerto Rico."
Many Reasons
The reasons are many and
some of them are complex, but
he saw their . solutions coming
into a happy conjunction in 1940
when Puerto Rico elected its own
governor for the first time. The
island had had governors since
Juan Ponce de Leon, but the first
to govern by the suffrage of
Puerto Ricans was Luis Munoz
Marin and ail he promised the
people was "to guide them on
the long, tortuous and sometimes
perilous uphill road toward a
decent life." .
The professor, who is chair
man of the geography and geol
ogy department of the University
of Delaware, saw Puerto Rico as,
"America s answer to Commu
nism."

Distressed By Attempts
To Prejudice Stepson
When a stepmother does all
she can for her stepchild, rela
tives should be satisfied. If they
are not, the stepmother is faced
with a difficult problem.
"Two years ago, I married a
widower with a son three years
old. His wife died when the
baby was born
and the wife's
parents took
care of the
baby. Since
our marriage,
I have been
taking care of
the boy and I
love him as
much as if he
were my own

Once a week, he goes . to spend
a day with his mother's parents.
When he comes home, he is very
hard to manage and rather re
sentful toward me. .
"He often says that 'Granny
said this about you', which has
led me to believe that his grand
parents are trying to turn him
against me. I always invite them
to spend every holiday with us
and often have them here for
the day on Sunday. My husband
feels that it is longer necessary

best way to divide it. During the
past decade, the people and lead
ers of Puerto Rico have done
such a tremendous job of improv
ing their lives through planned
econofmic development and social
reform that both their Commu
nists and their terrorists have
been reduced to small, numeri
cally insignificant groups which
seem curiously old-fashioned in
the current setting of seething,
creative activity."

frank talk with the grandpar

certainly would be unfair to
break off the contact unless it is
best for the boy.
Show them that you are try
ing to treat the boy as your own
and that you do not want him to
forget his own mother, even if
he never actually knew her. Let
them see how sincere you are in
your efforts to be a real mother
to him.
Then, if they persist in trying
to prejudice the boy against
you, you will have no alterna
tive but to break off the rela
tionship. It is not fair to the boy
to make him dissatisfied with
you and resentful toward your
efforts to make a good home for
him.
Of equal importance, it is un
fair to you to make your job of
being a mother to the boy a hard
