M.D. Readers should address inquiries to: William Brady. 263 El Camino, Beverly Hills. Calif. THE DIGITALIS HOKUM Concerning treatment of a per son after a "heart attack," a phy sician who presumably has had some experi ence as a con sultant, writes: "In many cases the man's doctor would have preferred not to give him any medicine, but he knew Dr. Brttdr it he didn't give some medicine the patient or his wife or family would feel that he was being badly neglected." So you see, poor souls, why some keep their customers tak ing digitalis indefinitely. Indeed some of them make their custo mers believe that life itself de pends on taking the daily dose of digitalis or some similar medi cine. It's funny how a doctor can be so busy and yet be afraid to tell a patient he doesn t need any medicine. Many times in my early prac tice the honest ysars I tried it, and the experiment proved costly. The patient would go straight from my office to the office of a more experienced doc or who considered medicine in dispensable. I not only lost busi ness but sometimes gained the crmity of the patient that way; the patient could be pretty in dignant if I decided after careful examination that he needed no medicine and yet charged a fee for my advice. It took several years lean, unhappy years for me to learn to hand such pa tients six cents worth of inert tablets and keep him coming. Then, after I became callous about that, I wasn't entirely hap py, except that the children got more of the pleasures other chil dren enjoyed. Digitalis may possibly be bene ficial in some circumstances. At least a lot of good doctors seem to think so. Some good doctors have tried to explain to me. In language simple enough for a i i child to understand, how and! wny digitalis is good for certain conditions of the heart. Trouble is, they become first nettlsd, then vehement, and finally so darn mad ... I used to say I'd never take digitalis unless my doctor order ed me to take it or else. Now I must amend that, to read as follows: I would not take digitalis in any conceivable circumstance. If I consulted a physician and the physician prescribed digitalis, I'd say "Uh-uh." If the doctor gave me the take-it-or-else routine I'd say "Well, that's too bad, Doctor. I liked you. But without digitalis. Give it to some poor goof who doesn't know anything about thereapeu-tics." It is my sincere belief that the heart tonic I recommended in the booklet C V D, about heart and artery troubles, would prova a 'boon to most poor geeks who think they have to take digitalis daily to keep going. For th booklet send 25c and stamped, self-addressed enveloce. Corvallis (U.R) Benton County Judge Georee McBee. j 62, died Friday. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Borated Talcum Powaer You boast that you acknowledge your mistake when you find you were wronR when wiU you apologize for advising the use of borated talcum on skin irritations of infants? (Miss F. T.) Answer When I learn of a sinele authenticated case of boric acid poisoning due to use of borated talcum powder. I'll consider the idea. Hairy Child Daughter, aged foui. seems healthy enough but has a lot of hair across shoulders and down back to the waist line, also on outer surfaces of arms and legs . . . (L. G. W.) Answer In some instances such hairiness is a manisfestation of hy pothyroidism deficient thvro'id gland function. Thyroid feeding, of course, under your physician's care, may correct the trouble in a matter of eight or ten months. Especially when the child's gain in height is slow. Protected 1955 by John r.
